“ I love this place for beer. My friend Rob and myself enjoyed a crisp, wonderful beer along with some lamb empanada's. The lamb filling was ok, and the mint sauce that came with it didn't have a lot of depth to the flavor. A little bit of vinegar or something else strong to give a different dimension to the mint dipping sauce would have made it perfect. The beer is the reason to go there thou. Great beer, nice atmosphere, waitresses are nice and not annoying. I would go again and I will for another beer :D ”

“
The couple of times that I have been here they have really over-garlicked the food, and it seemed oily (although that is authentic in many ways). It is fun because it is busy, and it is good for groups. The beer is good...but you can get good beer lots of places. ”

“ I think that this place is pretty good! Big and good for groups. They brew their own beer, which have been tasty in my experience. The portions are fair for the prices. Good for after-work drinks and appetizers. You can sit at the bar, casual tables, or be seated formally. ”

“ I love coming here with friends to see the floor show on Sunday nights. It's loud and you can't have a conversation, but the flamenco is great. The food is hit and miss. One time I went absolutely everything featured cheese, but last time I went the tapas were more traditional.

“ I love tapas but am always disappointed at tapas places in the US. I was trained to eat free bar food in the motherland of Spain (I know many of you are thinking, stop whining, you're not there anymore!) but I just think charging $7+ for a wedge of spanish tortilla (eggs, potatoes, onions) is highway robbery. The reason tapas are free or cheap bar food is b/c they are inexpensive to make. I guess you could argue jamon serrano, etc has to be imported so there's more cost. Anyhow, I'll get off my soapbox. This place can be fun for a work function or for a group but is usually overcrowded and not all that great.

“ I'm not in a hurry to return. The tapas were pricy for the portion size, there was sand in my mussels (ick, I can't stand that crunch), and the restroom looked like it hadn't been cleaned in ages. A friend I was with actually ended up writing a letter to complain about the state of the restroom, and she got a gift certificate in the mail. Too bad we don't want to go back to use it.

“ Went with a large group and they were accomodating. delicious salad and they had tortilla espanola which was yummy. I'm not sure why they had a big glob of cheese on it and why it was dripping with olive oil. . . it's is fine on its own as a simple egg and potato dish. Some vegetarian options-yay! Wish they incorporated more protein sources into their vegetarian dishes. Having a veggie paella was great-adding tofu or something else with protein would have been fabulous! Another suggestion would be to have caffeine-free diet coke. ”

“ My husband and I are trying to visit every restaurant in our neighborhood and so we went to Thirsty Bear. We were excited that Thirsty Bear is a micro-brewery. We had the Howard Street IPA and the Brown Bear Ale. I recommend both. The menu was pricy but the food was generally good. It was unique in that many of the flavors were unexpected, we had a selection of tapas that were diverse and for us experimental. The flavors in pairing very unique foods was interesting and often good. We had four tapas between the two of us and a dessert. It is definitely a place to go to if you are primarily interested in having drinks and maybe experimenting with your taste buds. But be prepared to spend some money to make a meal of it and make sure you have dessert, it is worth it. ”

“ I went here once, having heard good things about it. I guess the good burst along with the dot com bubble. If your going to make seafood paella your specialty, at least try and get fresh shell fish. The mussles tasted very fishy, and the whole dish was bland. The other apps were alright, but Ramblas for example blows them away. They do have great beer though. ”

“ If I had to pick a place to go for dinner, this wouldn't be it. The tapas are actually pretty good. BUT they are insanely expensive for the portion that you get. I don't mind spending a pretty penny for good food but I left feeling robbed. The seafood paella has been the only saving grace this restaurant has had in the 3 times I have been here. Definitely order it so that you don't leave hungry. The atmosphere makes me feel like I am hanging out in Orange County. ”

“ If I walk into your restaurant and I am told the dining room doesn’t open for five minutes, just know I am going to spend the next three minutes and forty five seconds having sex in the ladies room upstairs. The sangria seems like maybe for six bucks a glass, it should have more wine and less ice. The saffron crema of the tres cremas and friendly service are enough to keep me coming back to see what all is improving. Tapenade is great. Owning his suggestion, our server gladly replaced a goopy coffee flavored beer with something more our speed. ”

“ There are several items I usually judge a restaurant by. One is a Caesar salad and the other is Paella. Well their Paella was nothing more than yellow rice with prawns and clams tossed in. Missing was the taste of slowly intertwining flavors of the sausage, chicken, mussels, prawns, rice, shells etc., and saffron, which takes hours to develop and meld. Most of the dishes are fast food spanish style, all done without the most important ingredient. TIME. If all you want is fast food with a Catalan twist this is an ok place, but true Barcelona flavors are only a distant concept here. The menu has lots of stuff, including a large brew selection; service was quick, maybe a little too quick if you know what I mean. Pricy for what you get considering other places in town, with better tastes. Parking is rough unless you pay for a garage. It’s really a hang out type of place, rowdy groups seem to populate here after office hours, letting off steam…..... ”

“ A cute place to go before or after a show at the Yerba Buena. And definately beats the dining options at the Metreon if that's your destination. The food is pretty good, although not spectacular and when we went the service was quite good. ”

“ So here I am ...Señor Don Joey " and i walk in a tad bit apprehensive, after all I am of spanish(spaniard) descent and a bit picky to say the least. What amazed me was the sense that I could be in a restaurant somewhere in Spain enjoying the laughter and chatter of others, and yet not really leaving San Francisco at all. The decor is modern the service is fine....and the best thing is that the food is great!( fantastico) The beers are nice and different, or try perhaps a sangria. My favorite food here was like the fish cheeks...the s(congrejo), salpicon with mojo(piquant sauce) or the paellas are excellent as well. I think the portions may be a little skimpy for the price...but sometimes its all presentation. If you have not experienced spanish food and want to do it in a unique loud fun atmosphere..this place is for you. ”

“ Haven't been there for several years but when I did go I liked their beer (and like to support micro-brews generally) and thought their food, although possibly a bit on the spendy side for what you get was decent. Also, as others have said it's a good place for a large group. Multiple levels are conducive to private parties and they had no problem accommodating our party of 12. It is off the beaten track a bit (SOMA) and thus not super conducive to public tranportation. ”

“ Good beer and tapas is always fun. That being said, the quality of the food at Thirsty Bear has definitely gone down hill in the past few years. The portions are smaller (even for tapas) and some dishes are just plain bland. The paella was also a big disappointment. Great place for drinks and a snack, but not so good for a nice dinner. ”

“ A great place to go if you are on your way to a movie at the Metreon and don't want to eat in the food court - but the food is just ok. Sunday nights are fun because they have live entertainment. A pretty good place to have a private party - they offer a few different spaces and menu options. ”
