Positive Fuji Cuisine: Sushi Japanese West Portal
Pretty good korean sushi. The sushi is a little on the high side considering the quality. I ate alone at the bar (sad but true) and my entire bill was 25 bucks before tip...and I was a little hungry after I got done. The trick is to get the donburi or bento. Very friendly staff, and I like the fact that its usually busy. Pretty good, but I wouldn't think of Fuji if I wanted sushi in SF. If you are in West Portal and you are hungry for japanese, then its a good place to go. Review #21194

Positive Spiazzo Caffe Cuisine: Italian West Portal
I thought this place was great. We had a polenta with marinara and mushrooms. It was very wonderfully cooked. The polenta had a nice chew to it, and the mushrooms were so nicely cooked that it was like biting into small jewels. My main dish was a chicken pasta with white wine and veggies. It was not heavy, and the sauce complimented all the ingredients. Prices were very reasonable. My date and myself ate dinner with drinks for under 30 bucks..... Very knowledgeable staff and super nice interior. Totally recommend. Review #21193

Positive Le Charm French Bistro Cuisine: French (Bistro) SoMa
The feeling here is cozy, not high style ambience. Waitstaff is mostly asian, but my waiter had a thick french accent. At lunch recently I had the steak with frites, not at all expensive so I feared a tough experience. Happily, the meat was very tender, with no gristle, though slightly past the medium rare I'd specified. Frites were just right. The small green salad was a bit soggy, though, and the stuffed tomato uninspired. The little square of dark chocolate that came gratis with my espresso was a nice touch. I'd go back to explore more of the menu. Review #21192

Located in the Jack London Shopping barn in Glen Ellen. Open for breakfast & lunch only. The food is wholesome and delicious. This is home made tasting "country food". Quiches, Pannini, vegetable soups, fresh salads Ingredients are purchased at the local markets. It would be nearly impossible to spend more than $20 per person on a full out meal. Wine and beer are sold. Dining room is decorated with wine country house wares. It's all for sale. Good lunch stop for something "a little lighter". Review #21191

Positive Red Currant Cafe Cuisine: Mediterranean Bistro Menlo Park
6/08 Tue. Where can you find great food, serene gardens & local arts all in 1 place? Red Currant at the Allied Arts Guild is such a hidden treasure. The bistro is a makeover from a previous cafe. The food is superbly med, using fresh produce and fancy olive oil. The med salad ($13.75) was outstanding, with very tasty roasted peppers & mint-basil yogurt dressing. The roasted beet salad ($13.50) had both red & orange beets, served with horseradish cream & champagne vinaigrette. The tuna nicoise sandwich ($11.75) was uniquely italian with sliced hard boiled egg & persian cucumber on focaccia. The side green salad was well seasoned with balsamic & oil. Sitting in a fountain courtyard and surrounded by blooming flowers, can this be Tuscany, Catalan, or sunny Menlo Park? After lunch we strolled hand in hand in the maze of separate gardens -- roses, perennials, citrus trees & hanging baskets. These and the spanish archway, stone/brick path & artisan stores are as charming as the food. Wow! Review #21188

Positive Epic Roasthouse Cuisine: Seafood Steakhouse Embarcadero
Epic architecture, epic views, epic prices featuring nearly epic cuisine risking eclipsing the tous ensemble. Exhilarating destination roadhouse, Epic Roasthouse epitomizes San Francisco gourmet dining for tourists. San Franciscans may delight in the feng shui ambience complimented by chef's creative flavor combinations. Old Timers may prefer the occasionally stale House of Prime Rib, but food at Epic steals the show. Stunning green pepper salad with just enough heat, delectable beef tartare prepared tableside, to die for delicious short ribs. Astonishingly huge and succulent port tenderloin with the freshest of meat; unexpected side of enormous wild mushrooms, the consistency of steak. Obscenely priced baked potato for $10, unnecessary given otherwise gargantuan portions. desserts include fabulous diverse flavors of homemade ice cream, enticing creamed corn and decadent caramel. Exorbitant wine list with few standout bargains: 2003 Laurel Glen Cabernet for $60. Solicitous service. Review #21187

Negative Q Restaurant Cuisine: American (New) Inner Richmond
I've been here about 1/2 a dozen times and each time I walk away w/a different experience. Today wasn't any different. After perusing the menu I choose the bacon, caramelized marmalade onion and Bleu Cheese Omelet w/an extra piece of toast. Sounds good! What's up w/the 1 slice any more, hmmm. Oh well, I dive in and am immediately taken aback. There are more onions than bacon and it's so sweet it overpowers the dish. Not to mention I had to hunt for the sprinkles (literally) of bleu cheese. O.K., so I start picking out all the onions to find very little bacon. Next fork full is the potatoes. Now they look good but are luke warm. Meal is going down hill at this point. O.K. you cant' go wrong w/toast right, "wrong". It's 1/2 toasted, cool and no butter. I have to find the waitress to ask for butter. Again, what's up with that. Server comes by, asks how things are I tell her, "o.k.", but not great. Potatoes are cold. She offers up new ones and I think what's the point. Review #21186

Positive Da Pit Cuisine: BBQ Barbecue Western Addition
In the South barbecue is a way of life, an all day affair or a quick solution to the daily question “What's for supper?” Men fight over the honor of their barbecue in some places, never insult a man's barbecue. I miss southern barbecue. I stumbled upon Da Pit, formerly Brother-in-Law's BBQ, found a parking spot right in front at half past noon. A girls gotta eat lunch, right? A nice gentleman says, as he is chopping brisket, “ I don't have the Mac and cheese today but I got green beans and potato salad.” I ordered the brisket to go with potato salad, as I saw an industrial size can of corn in the kitchen, I assumed the green beans where also caned. I was offered a choice of mild, medium or spicy bbq sauce and went with the medium, perfect balance of smoky, sweet and spicy. The brisket was stellar in between a slice of white bread, oh yeah! The potato salad was the sweet version, which I don't care for generally. Enjoyed my lunch and had enough left over for supper! Review #21185

Positive Cook's Seafood Restaurant Cuisine: Seafood Menlo Park
7/08 Sat. I was debating whether I should write about Cook's. We only ordered fish n chips ($10) for each of us, and shared a white clam chowder ($3 for 8 oz). The place is small, but tidy & neat. There was not really a lot of stuff to review about. How about the different choices of fish you can pick? We had the halibut, which turned out to be a 1.5” thick, credit card size chunk of meat. I didn't like the artificial shape of the fish, nor the well done meat, albeit fresh and tasty. I could have ordered the Pacific cod, salmon, or sanddab (a few $ less), since later I saw that they were fillet shape & thinner (classical!). But the giant country fries were perfectly done. The chowder was ok, but I liked it more if it was thicker (eat with a fork!). At least I did not chew on any shell particles like in other places. Well, next time when I urge for F-n-C and feel lazy to go to HMB, I will return here and order cod, along with oysters too. Review #21183

Negative Red Rose Cafe Cuisine: Barbecue Santa Rosa
If you only have 1 hour to eat a meal, forget it! Arriving at 10:30 with few other patrons, it took 10 minutes to get menus. The sole waitress was running around unfocused with multiple trips to each table while ready plates baked under hot lites. We thought we could at least get some coffees before she returned for our order 15 minutes later. Several plates kept arriving in cue at the pass while she ran around not having a clue of what efficient table waiting was. We kept looking at the plates at the pass, thinking that we would be the next, the next, the next...Well after 30 minutes we got our orders. IT was not worth the wait! Greasy tasteless matted down hash browns, dry omelettes, my friends breakfast burrito was wrapped in a dried out tortilla and the order of poached eggs where rock hard, placed in a small bowl to represent that something would actually flow out when pierced. They desperately need to look up what Multitasking is. Until then forget it! Never Again. Review #21182

Positive Mombo's Pizza Cuisine: Pizza Santa Rosa
The big downside of the internet is that someone like Samarati can so totally misrepresent himself and any unsuspecting business he chooses to dis and readers have no way of knowing whether he is legitimate or not. I own Mombo's pizza and have since I founded it in 2001. Mombo's has never, ever used an electric oven. We have always used gas fired stone deck Montague ovens, the exact same ovens I used at pizza My Heart in Capitola, Santa Cruz, and San Francisco from the time I founded it in 1981 until I sold it in 1990. Mombo's has only and always used the highest grade 100% whole milk mozzarella and we routinely conduct blind taste tests to insure we're using the best available. This guy is correct in stating it's not "California pizza". It is authentic New York style pizza, made from scratch daily on our premises. But the sauce is not canned. We use fresh packed tomatoes and have a recipe I've been using since first acquiring it Back East over 30 years ago. He says he's 3rd genera Review #21180

Positive Fleur De Lys Cuisine: French (New) Nob Hill
I was looking for something else online, and stumbled upon this site. The Fleur de Lys lives! I visited in 1976 for my 21st birthday, and it was magic. I had frog legs sauteed in butter, and they were delicate and delicious. They were accompanied by a lovely little mound of something with a flavor I couldn't quite place until it finally came to me - green beans and potatoes together with probably lots of cream and butter. My birthday date accompanied all of this with a $40.00 bottle of Bordeaux, and even the complimentary birthday cake of another review here sounds familiar. And yes, I remember the service - so elegant and attentive, yet friendly. How lovely to know the Fleur de Lys is still operating and delighting in San Francisco. I no longer live in SF, but look forward to visiting again. (As for my date? Ah... I married someone else!) Review #21178

Positive DiAvola Pizzeria & Salumeria Cuisine: Pizza Italian Healdsburg
Top notch gourmet pizza, using imaginative ingredients fresh from the garden and barnyard. All toppings are local farm products. In-house made salumi. The italian chef owns the place. Uses a real wood burning oven. Recent press reviews are calling DiAvola one of the 4 best pizzerias on the west coast, alongside Delfina in SF, Serious Pie in Seattle & Pizzeria Mozza in LA. The recently re-hab'ed 100 year old brick storefront now looks urban chic cool. Service folks are sincere, cheerful, and efficient. Bambie & I loved our 2 pizzas and salads. Fresh, flavorful, authentic good food. Geyserville was an abandoned ghost town until recently. The rebirth started with Santi Restaurant a few years ago. With the new art galleries, 2 wine tasting rooms and this world class pizzeria Geyserville is becoming a fun destination. It's just 10 minutes north of Healdsburg. Yummy Alert. After buying Santi's french style white wine sausages at the Santa Rosa Farmer's market, I convinced Bambie to drive up to Geyserville for lunch. The best idea I had in 2 weeks. The food is simply fabulous. Bambie & me had roasted raddichio on toast & cheese crumbles spiked with anchovy sauce, a bowl of risotto, a bowl of simmered tripe, appetizer of marinated olives, & panna cotta. Finished with the most expensive & the richest cup of espresso I've ever had. Wine list has 150 bottles, 25 by-the-glass. Price mark-up reasonable. Tuesday night is 50% wine discount. Geyserville was a ghost town for many years. Recently several art galleries have opened. DiAvola Pizzeria (Owned & operated by Santi restaurant) opened last week to rave reviews. There's also two wine tasting shops open for your pleasure. Geyserville is now a fun tiny town destination when you visit northern Sonoma county. Eat here for fabulous italian dishes! Review #21176

Neutral Masala Jack's Original Good Ol' Indian Curryhouse Cuisine: Indian Santa Rosa
This is Americanized versions of indian food made for people who are afraid of spicy food. 3 of us hospital hooligans just had lunch here. We're all regular indian food eaters, we all agreed that all the 7 different dishes that we ordered lacked aromatic spices. Food quality was a hit & miss ordeal. Tikka Masala is good, then the Nan is wet and drab. The rice was too dry. The spices on the rice were not well integrated, I actually got a raw clove in my teeth. The cauliflower/potato (aloo gobi) was mushy & had a yucky mouth feel. The spinach paneer was okay, but not very creamy. We ate a lot of food for $38. That's the deal here, it's low priced. I've had way better tasting indian food in the SF bay area, notably Bombay Express in San Rafael and Raj Cafe in Albany (Solano Ave). Review #21175

Positive Fresca Cuisine: Peruvian Upper Fillmore
7/08 Sun. We found Fresca during the Fillmore Jazz Fest. Nouveau peruvian cuisine? Curiosity turned into a taste expedition. The small interior is decorated with peruvian arts and blasted with hip music. For the ceviche trio ($15), we picked hamachi sashimi, lobster & crab, and mix of halibut, squid, clam & shrimp. Amazingly the sauce was different for each group, from pleasing soy/wasabi to sharp lime juice. Very titillating! The conchitas ($12) was very refined - pesto & quinoa crusted giant scallops, on a bed of mashed white bean & truffle lobster sauce. Nouveau indeed! The paella ($23) was outstanding - moist & full of spices with sausage, chicken, squid, scallop, mussel & clam. Half pitcher of sangria ($15) was enough for 4 - refreshing and well balanced in wine, juice & soda. For finale ($8 each), the tres leches chocolate cake was tender & subtly sweet, and the purple corn creme brulee was uniquely smooth & flavorful. The busy staff kept their sanity and efficiency. WOW! A fabulous brasserie in Graton California? Tuesday 7:00pm, the place is packed. The bar is 2 deep with chatty customers. The main dining room has the french bistro aura down perfectly. Also, 2 outdoor dining patios & a bocce ball court for your pleasure. The cigarette smokers are out there. The food is simply fabulous. The core menu has all the french meals you expect: Duck confit, steak & frites, french onion soup with a perfect melted cheese crust. My tuna tartare with all sorts of tiny vegetables & relishes was sublime. There are 3 nightly specials: 1 fish, 1 beef, and 1 vegetarian. Wine list: 18 by the glass selections, 75 bottles. Mostly californian, some french. Wine mark-up is double Bev-Mo' retail. Bambi & I over ate on purpose to try many items. We really overdid it, without regrets. I felt fine in the morning. We went in to The Kitchen on the 4th of July after hearing some good things about it. We had a 30 minute wait which was exactly what we were told. When we were seated we were brought tea, and after that we were never offered water, or any other beverage. When the carts came around 90% of the time the server said "no speak english" when we asked what an item was. Unlike Yank Singh, the benchmark for dim sum, the food was meager in the fillings and the service was horrid. We went for one 25 minute spell where we were not offered any food. We are a cacausion couple and unfortunately we felt we were treated terribly because of that. Positive Mai Vietnamese Restaurant Cuisine: Vietnamese Santa Rosa
Viet Namese restaurants are rare in Sonoma County. Except for Simply Vietnam in Santa Rosa, most serve mediocre food with surly service in funky dining rooms with dirty toilets. Mai's in Cotati is a refreshing improvement. The d?r is clean & fresh, table setting is simple, the owners & employees are cheerful & respectful. The local press has awarded enthusiastic accolades. My Pho Tai & Mi Cuon were okay, not superlative. Mai's Pho was not hearty as the meat portion was slim just 1 slice of brisket, 1 tendon, & 1/4 sausage only. The broth had more star anise flavor than beef reduction. The side of basil, mung sprouts & lime were crispy fresh. I consumed every drop of pho. But I've had better in Paris France, SF, Viet Nam & even in Santa Rosa. My shrimp spring rolls were fresh, yet a bit too gummy. The peanut sauce and chili sauce sides were excellent. The place was full on a Tuesday @ 1:00pm. The $13 lunch was a good value. I'll return to try other dishes. Review #21166

I feel sorry for the little town of Windsor, it has one remaining chinese restaurant. This place does an acceptable but not memorable job, unless you call burn Moo sue pork, normal it has to suffice unless you are willing to spend and extra 10 bucks in gas to go to Santa Rosa. Won Ton soup was OK, filling but not lip smacking I'll be sure and order it again dish. The pork dish was disappointing in that something in the Wok, instilled an burn flavor, but the experience was not worth the complaint or the wait for an replacement dish. Prices or moderate 8 to 12 dollars for entrees, service was acceptable and the selection was the normal boring fill your face with chinese food settle for anything hot dishes. Negative Left Bank Cuisine: French (Brasserie) San Mateo
Having eaten in their Marin location this place was a big letdown. You would think a waiter knows what a Knob Creek is, and you would think the bar would own a bottle of it! Or are the Larkspur people just more sophisticated? Well anyway our lunch started out with that! Then we waited for 15 minutes for two martinis to arrive, with the oyster appetizers also caught in the traffic jam. With the place half empty ordering oysters shouldn't take 25 minutes. My Mussel dish was OK, but nothing special ( mussel a tad overcooked and dry and chewy) . IT would have been nice had the pomme frites arrived anywhere in time to enjoy them before I had consume 90 % of my meal. The place is located in a shopping center/office complex and was one of the bigger disappointments in my experiences simply because the Larkspur place is so stellar! The food just didn't have the snap and oh wow, or ummmm like it does in their other place. Not a place I will journey to in the near future. Review #21163

I had the Panini with mozzarella, Gorgonzola, goat and grana cheeses with arugula and Sicilian olives, all atop grilled country bread ($8). More of a european grilled cheese that a Panini, they grilled the bread with butter stove top rather than with the italian sandwich press. Positive Hang Ah Dim Sum Cuisine: Chinese Santa Rosa
Finally a chinese place with normal waiters, attentive and polite! The old A&W root beer drive in, is now a DimSum joint with a good future! Opened a month ago the place is filled with Native asian diners busily eating and conversing.( A good sign) Our starter was the Won Ton soup, plain tasteless broth, with 8 small very tasty dumplings.$5.50 for one quart. Our dim sums varied from shrimp stuffed eggplant, steamed minced shrimp, pork ribs in a black bean sauce and ChiuChou Steamed Dumplings. Based on my previous tastes in the city, this place scores better on taste and texture, AND on price! Prices range for 3 pieces between 2.50 to 4.50 each. We were able to exit leaving a generous tip for $40 bucks. A non happening anywhere in the city! The subtle flavors were all there, as was the courteous service. The regular menu items are on the high side, ranging between 8 to 12 bucks for most items. The place is also clean, and my clothes didn't smell like a deep fat fryer. Review #21161

Positive Toad in the Hole Pub Cuisine: English Pub Food Santa Rosa
I've just read the review from Samarati and I have to disagree a little. I'm from the UK, and have been sampling Fish and Chips from a number of places in the USA. Betty's in Santa Rosa is overrated by a long way. Just because they've been around a while does not make them good. The Toad in the Hole is by far the best I've had this side of the Atlantic. The chips are actually real chips and not french Fries like other places. The Fish is actually cod, with a good batter and not some nondescript white fish. The other menu items are good too. All fresh and home made such as the pasties and shepherds pie. The best part of this pub is that Pauli the landlord normally has a cask beer on tap which reminds me of home. Real Ale tastes so much better when it isn't chilled too much. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. If you want a genuine pub atmosphere and not a make believe one which can be found the other side of the 101, then this is for you. Review #21159

Negative Bechelli's Flower Market Cafe Cuisine: Coffee Shops/Diners Italian SoMa
I popped in here to pick up some lunch on the go. I'd seen this place a million times; it's located just before the freeway on ramp. It's at the SF flower Market and I like flowers, so why not? The space is huge, one large dinning room, one covered outdoor dinning area and one small "to-go" espresso cafe. I ordered a mushroom, sun dried tomatoes and goat cheese sandwich, what I got was a terribly misguided experiment that should have never left the kitchen. I was really hungry and I could not eat this sandwich, I ate the pickle, the garnish and the rest went into the trash. What a waste. I ordered sliced sour dough and got a very soft french roll, piled with raw mushrooms that had seen about 3 seconds of heat, a cup and a half of very dry (not marinated) sun dried tomatoes and a smidge of goat cheese. I cannot recommend. Review #21158

Our department selected this restaurant as part of our annual work related celebration for successful accomplishments we've achieved through-out the year. With that said, a party of about 38 people (everything pre-ordered and repeatedly confirmed on how the entire menu would be served and was agreed upon, beforehand) were not only neglected and rudely ignored by most of the wait staff and management through most of the entire service, we were also severely over-charged and the bill was excessively padded with extras for items not purchased and/or received. We were told lies in between the service in regards to our food selections and when we tried to rectify the issues, we were treated with complete disregard and non-ownership of any problems the wait staff and management created or were directly involved with. I would NEVER recommend this place for any dining experience , especially, because with all said, the food quality and prices were completely outrageous to ever warrant eve Review #21157

Positive Saint Rose Cuisine: American (New) Santa Rosa
Out in the boonies west of Sebastopol where the 2 crows restaurant recently went broke in this building. The decor theme is funky American roadhouse. 3 rooms or dine in the backyard. The nightly menu is short, 4 salads & 4 entrees. The wine list is broader with50 bottles both californian & european. Prices are restaurant average. Bambie & I swooned over the lobster salad filled with beets, new potato, shaved fennel, frisee lightly coated with a seafood remoulade. Bambie had a simple poached whole sea bass. So fresh it practically swam up to the table. My roast 1/2 chicken was perfect. Fresh corn on cob was cayenne peppered spicy without the ugly mouth burn. All flavors on the plate were balanced. Adult servers are down home casual, yet smart & engaging. Chef/owner Mark Malicki is a unique & gifted artist. I'm glad that he enjoys working the economic down-scale scene. He could charge Michael Mina prices in a high end location with food this good. Review #21153

Positive Shalimar Cuisine: Indian Polk St./Van Ness
Wow, just wow. Very tasty Naan bread and the spices were perfect. Lots of punch, perfumy, and full of body. Our tikka masala was excellent!! The chicken was very moist, spiced to let your lips feel a little heat and ohh.... amazing. Just mix in the oil of the curry and you have yourself a wonderful experience. I think the reason that most people complain about the grease here is because they dont use the amount of heavy cream or other emulsifiers to hold the oil in the curry. Most other places are too creamy but Shalimar was good and I will go there again :D Review #21152

Positive Coffee to the People Cuisine: Organic Coffee Shop Haight-Ashbury/Cole Valley
BEST coffee house in the city. Great organic/free trade coffee and tea selections all around and FREE internet. They've got several alternatives to milk, including hazelnut milk - which makes a great latte', instead of soy. Great comfy couches to relax and read and plenty of tables to sit and work, or meet up with friends. I like all the cool '60s esque posters and such, very appropos for the Haight/Ashbury neighborhood - and the people working there are cool too. Also, great food options from bagels to sandwiches to muffins/pastries - though I wish that they semi-healthy feel that accompanies "organic" coffee would pervade the food choices - "vegan donuts" and the artificially colored "Princess Cake" are incongruent distractions. Neutral Magnolia Pub & Brewery Cuisine: Organic Pub Food Haight-Ashbury/Cole Valley
Great tasting eclectic beer selection and terrific french fries. I love that they focus on local food sources and quality meats (which my wife loves), but I wish they'd have a quality veggie burger too - because as a vegetarian I'm left with few options beyond the roasted beet salad (which is great). Fun city atmosphere, though don't expect to hear each other unless you get a booth (noisy). Review #21150

Positive Tikka Masala Cuisine: Indian Pakistani Haight-Ashbury/Cole Valley
For moderate cost indian food that tastes great - this place rocks! Many vegetarian options for me - 8 dishes that I could eat! I had the Vegetable Biryani along with the special dish, Lobia (black -eyed peas), and the onion naan was delicious (just the perfect combination of warm crunchy/chewy/oniony. I appreciate the owner hospitality and care that seems to go into the food and enhances my overall experience. No table service, self-serve water, and an austere look/feel to the place that reminds me of restaurants visited while traveling overseas - but to get a satisfying and healthy meal for around $20 is a real treat in San Francisco. Did I mention you can even order wine if you want to? Review #21149

Positive E Tutto Qua Cuisine: Italian North Beach
I can't believe it-a really good-not touristy-italian restaurant in North Beach. Although I usually don't go near North Beach on the weekends even though I live within a few blocks, I ended up there on a hot Friday night needing to find a place for dinner. The other reviewers here put this place on my "need to try" list. Thank you. This place was just right. I had the beet salad and the carpaccio appetizer-a perfect meal for a torrid night. My companion had the duck entree which was extremely delicious albeit a bit meager in portion size. They did something to the greens on the side that made them particularly tasty. Everything was beautifully plated and presented. And the service! At least 8 different employees asked us if everything was ok & if we were enjoying our meal & they all seemed to be quite sincere. There is a real pride in the food & the service here. I only wish I had been hungrier as everything coming out for the kitchen looked delicious. I will be back soon to try Review #21148

Positive La Bergerie Restaurant Cuisine: French Inner Richmond
Walking into La Bergerie is like walking on to the set of Three's Company. Dinning at the french “Regal Beagle” is fun , like a place time forgot, I suspect it has not changed much over the years. The food is classic french, it is what Julia taught all those American housewives to cook up in the late 1960's, everything with more butter and cream yum! I've been a few times and every dish is a winner, perfectly executed and a tremendous value. “Fancy” french lamb, lobster, filet mignon and escargot with soup, salad, dessert and coffee for about $23, it's hard to beat. Go in expecting traditional french comforting food not cutting edge splashy french and you'll be happy. Enjoy! Review #21147

Neutral Hard Knox Cafe Cuisine: Southern Soul Food Outer Richmond
I was excited to try the Hard Knox cafe; I'm from the south and love southern style soul food. It's tricky to compete with the experiences of my childhood, which set the bar high for this type of food. We were started off with corn bread muffins, a bit sweet with a crunchy baked top and a moist corn cake inside, nice. I had the country fried steak with corn and mac?n cheese, I really wanted the green beans but they were out. The mac'n cheese was rich and satisfying. The corn was overcooked and very sweet. The country-fried steak was tender, flavorful and juicy. I was disappointed with the brown gravy; I really prefer the white country gravy. This is a restaurant that will get a steady stream of regulars from the neighborhood, if they start to offer white country gravy I maybe one of them. Entrees with two sides and corn muffins runs about $12, which makes Hard Knox an option any night of the week. Enjoy! Review #21146

Neutral Washoe House Cuisine: Steakhouse Petaluma
I appreciate the historical importance of this place. This is California's oldest existing roadhouse restaurant. Been in constant business in the same location since the middle 1800's. It's an old stagecoach stop. You come back here to see if the business card and dollar bill that you stapled to the ceiling 30 years ago is still there. Food? Big greasy burgers, Big greasy french Fries, Big greasy fried chicken. Ride your Harley-Davidson up here on a sunny summer day. Come for the history, drink the Budweiser. If you eat the food, you'll belch all the way on the ride home. Don't forget to chew 4 or 5 Rolaids before going to bed. Review #21145

Neutral Thai Ginger Bistro Cuisine: Thai Petaluma
Ate a lunch special, it wasn't. BBQ lovers pork. Not very good. Poor quality meat (Safeway quality or worse). 2 tiny & thin pork chops merely grilled on the stove no BBQ flavor. Too overcooked. When the meat cooled on my plate it was tough as leather. Steamed rice was fine. Tiny salad on the side of the plate accompanied by factory made sweet sauce from a jar. Not worth $13.99. Plate presentation was fine. The dining room is acceptable for a tiny space. Employees behaved okay. Owner is a cool guy. His thai wife & friends running the kitchen are a bit too matter-of-fact. They're in this business for the money, Not the love. It shows in the food. I love thai food, but not at this place. No return for me. Review #21144

Positive Harvest Moon Cafe Cuisine: Californian Mediterranean Sonoma
This is a small husband (chef de cuisine) & wife (pastry chef) restaurant on the touristy Sonoma Plaza that absolutely charms. Especially in summer when you dine al fresco on the back patio. The indoor, ancient adobe dining room is both claustrophobic & dark; eat in there only during bad weather. The menu is short and focused. Features fresh, local meat & vege?s. The wine list, as well, is short, well balanced and fairly priced. Bonus: Dog friendly dining patio: Bring Rover (on a leash). Bambie & I tried 5 dishes and 4 wines. The food was sincere craft that approaches art. Art without pretense. This is honestly good food that is interesting, mildly surprising and satisfying. Servers know their stuff. They can explain the items and recommend the best wine to compliment the food. We ate for 1.5 hours. We loved every minute. Price $84 plus tip. Top notch recommendation. Review #21143

Neutral B44 Catalan Bistro Cuisine: Spanish Downtown
6/08 Sat. B44 is not the same rank as B52, and it could be a dud. We went for the $32 Dine About Town 3-course dinner. The goods: 1. Cured anchovies served with shaved cheese on top and pear slices on the bottom. The fish was cured perfectly without over salting and tasted great. 2. Tiger prawns grilled on an iron pan with garlic and spices. When first served, the prawn was cooked just right. But on standing in the hot pan, they seemed to be overcooked soon. But the strong spices made them ever delicious. 3. Dark chocolate mousse cake was intensely satisfying. The bads: 1. Paella Dine About Town was dehydrated and thus chewy with the cutup pieces of squid, shrimp and whatnots. May be it should be served in a regular dish instead of iron plate. The 4 mussels with shells were teasers. 2. Pork prime rib was dry, overdone and lack seasoning. The not so goods: sporadic service during the night, tight seating & small tables inside or out in the alley. Feel like real Spain? Review #21141

Negative Cafe Gratitude Cuisine: Raw Vegetarian San Rafael
I went there with a group of around 15 people for a birthday party. My wife and I have spent more than 7 years traveling the world and enjoying various cuisines. We have eaten every known kind of food including several raw food specialists. For me personally, I enjoy the textures and tastes of food and am not concerned with the psychology people attach to certain foods. I want good food. This place didn't have it. I asked if something could be made without salt and was told that was impossible due to the fact that the food was delivered and not prepared in the restaurant. I had to settle for a salad with oil and vinegar because every dressing was also heavily salt laden. My wife went for a dish recommended by the waitress and even she who eats salt found it inedible. We sampled other peoples food and found each and every dish so salty it could be considered criminal to serve to a group of elderly folks such as ourselves who try to limit salt for health reasons. This is a good place to take people (Groups of more than 2) if they are new to San Francisco. The view is really the only reason to go to this place. The food is good, but its not spicy
