“ This Bistro has now setteled in nicely across from Laguna honda hospitol and just next to the muni station. It does have a small parking lot, but it is difficult to navigate. Food...it is a mediocre french bistro that serves the usual suspects with a short but ok list. when they first opened thier portions were more generous, abd the ingrediants better quality, they have dumbed down for the neighborhood. Zinc a short drinve to Noe is a better alternative is this french starved part of the city.... ”

“ Got in late last night after spending the weekend winetasting in Paso Robles and wanted to keep the party going...Chou Chou didn't let us down. We had the onion soup, frissee salad & proscuitto tart to share and the lamb shank and mussells as our mains. Onion soup and salad were solid, great flavours...what you would expect of a local bistro. The tart was OK,a bit soggy, nice flavours but it just didn't pull together. The lamb shank was HUGE and perfectly cooked on a bed of polenta & a few brussel sprouts. It wasn't nicely seared but we'll let it go because the flavours were great...perfect amount of salt and seasonings. The mussels were also wonderful and more than plentiful (I couldn't finish them!) The broth was white wine, garlic, parsley & cream--YUM, there was a lot of bread being dipped. The pomme frites were not too good; soggy and small little pieces. I think it was because we were the LAST people being served...so I hope for better next time. Andy, our waiter, was AWESOME.

“ I love this place for dinner...breakfast, not so much. Eggs and potatoes you can get anywhere. Crab salad with pork tenderloin and mashed potatoes? Steak au poivre that's made right? Frisse salad with petit lardons and poached egg? Duck confit with truffle oil? This might be the only place in San Francisco where I've seen île flotante on the menu. Be sure to order a side of french fries. ”

“ Went with friends intending to go to the chinese place a couple of doors down, but they were closed for the High Holy Days. Didn't have reservations and place was packed, but they were very, very nice. Sat us at the tiny bar. Had nice kir royales waiting for a table. Their specialty is cassoulets (which our friends have had and love), but none of us had it. Everything was excellent. Small but ample portions.Good wines by the glass as well.

“ Each time I've gone, they have been extremely accomodating. On Mother's day, they were able to squeeze us into the small table by the door. Another time, we went in a little before they were closing, and they had run out of the desert we wanted, so they brought a substitution on the house! Great basics here, you can't go wrong. Parking can be a challenge.

“ What I liked best about Chou Chou (pronounced "shoo shoo") is the modern, eclectic interior. Boyfriend and I were able to share both an appetizer (smoked salmon on crisp, warm flatbread with creme fraiche, capers, red onions) and a dessert (a slice of soft chocolate almond tart) alongside individual mains and still have enough food for a filling meal.
I had an enormous bowl of mussels in a light garlic and white wine sauce, served with delicate little fries. Boyfriend (who won for sure) ordered rack of pork over mashed potatoes with a morel sauce and sautéed spinach. We had drinks, too. Try the cote sud cocktail ($7) for something refreshing, cool, and lavender-y different. Wines by the glass were about $8. Our bill only came to around $75 (less tip), which is close to what we aim for on a date. Overall comments: wonderful treat, close to our 'hood, modern decor. I'll be back for the casolette! ”

“ The very nice exterior drew me in one day. I just went for the 2nd time. Both times I've been impressed. There is parking. The service is magnificent, very friendly, courteous, attentive and funny. We had a very flavorful salad and mussels. The prices are reasonable. For a moment I considered keeping this place my little secret, but then I decided it isn't fair to you or the restaurant, so please enjoy!

“ Went with 3 friends last evening. My second visit and this was even better than the first. The staff is super friendly (except for the hostess who could use some schooling in tact. She questioned if I have made a booking in spite of the fact they had called me to reconfirm. Then came by a second time questioning me! She was not french, by the way) Our french waiter more than made up for it as did the host. At one point, he placed a new napkin in front of me, which puzzled me, until I saw him bend down and pick the one off the floor that had been on my lap. Now that's attention to detail!. The food was superb. I had a salade frisee as good as any I have had in France. Nice frisee lettuce, crisp lardons and a perfectly poached egg on top. My mussels were delicious although the broth a bit salty. dessert was a pear tart with chocolate on it. Excellent. I highly recommend Chou Chou. By the way if you get there early there is parking in their lot next door.

“ While bistros are characteristically not meant to exude refinement and panache, Chou Chou is all class. This is exhibited by the welcome that my father received one afternoon. He rolled off Laguna Honda, dirty and dusty from a day of painting. Mildly intrigued by the interesting facade of the building (which sets it apart from the rest of the strip) and with the mind of popping in only for a bite to eat. He sat at the small bar area they have in the back area and landed into a long conversation with the owner. After this conversation and a complimentary sampling of most of their menu, my father came home raving about the authenticity of the light french fare, but also the kindness and thoughtfulness of the staff. I quite clearly remember his enthusiasm over the tarts. He promptly made reservations for dinner with my mother and I and his raves were confirmed. ”

“ Best duck confit in town! (cassoulets are pretty tasty too). I'd even go in there solely for one of their chocolate tarts, exhibited in a glass case next to the bar. Service is friendly, prompt and helpful if one is undecided. Although their wine list could use a perk, I always manage to discover a new french varietal that I like. It's my neighborhood 'french Comfort-Food' joint. Never let's me down.

“ Seems I've been on a french bistro kick lately. This one is definitely one of the tops on the list. Great atmosphere, friendly service and my favorite Croque Madame in the city so far. The french onion soup is top notch. The pastries are super good. I was here for brunch today and can't wait to try dinner. ”

“ Great spot: friendly staff, nice ambiance, and food that is consistently good across the board. The chocolate and fruit tarts are not to be missed.
Hey lbraum: why do you say that friendly staff are rare at french restaurants? I hope you are not perpetuating the xenophobic point of view that the french are aloof or arrogant. ”

“ Yum-yum! Chou-Chou has such excellent food in its intimately friendly setting. The starters are all delicious and the savory pot pies are delightful. It's nice to have a quality restaurant in the suburbs. Parking is easy. On hot evenings, the inside of the restaurant can get a bit too warm. But all in all, it's a sweetheart of a restaurant! I would definitely check it out. ”

“ the food and service was excellent! we ordered 3 appetizers (Flat bread smoked salmon over confit onions, micro greens, tobiko caviar, sour whipped cream, Fricassee d' escargots on shallots white wine sauce, chouchou brioche, roasted garlic tomato, Giant tiger prawns over spinach arugula salad, toasted almonds slices, warm capers bell pepper lime dressing and one entree: seafood cassolette: Dungeness crab meat, fresh scallops, calamari, tiger prawns, clams, fingerling potatoes in a cayenne creamy blue crab bisque to share. all of them were great! you would think that it would be heavy, but was light......when we got the entree which it was yummy, but noticed that the tiger prawn (BIG) was not fully cooked and we didn't want to take any chances to eat it since it was kinda raw, so we let our waiter know that it was not fully cooked-he apologized for this and said that he'd let the chef know. he came back and told us that the dish was on the house. dessert was YUM-cherry/berry tart! ”

“ A real neighborhood haunt that attracts not the hippest of crowds (being in Forest Hill, the clientele is in the 50's), but the food is excellent and the staff are extremely friendly (rare for a french restaurant). The pastries are to die for, and since it is a patisserie, you can go in and get one of their chocolate and fruit tarts to go. Decent wine list. Make reservations everyday except Monday and Tuesday. It's packed on the weekends and usually has a small crowd outside waiting for a table ”
