“
The taste is so terrible. We ordered three items first but we couldn't eat those. So nasty and no taste. I tried burmese food in my friends house before. It was pretty good.
So only one time is enough. No more Mandalay. ”

“ I think it was ok.... the service is good... and some dishes are quite good... like the lamb curry and the burmese style vegetable. But DO NOT order the burmese Chicken.. it remind me of Panda Express... not special at all. I wish their portion could be bigger...for the price they're charging, i think they can go bigger. I went there with 2 or my friend, and I only got 2 spoon of lamb curry and it's all gone. It's a good place to go with 1 or 2 friends, but certainly not in a large party group. ”

“
This quaint little eatery had truly delightful service and served up some tasty burmese dishes. I was able to make a reservation and was seated right away on arrival, two big pluses for me. We started with the Tea Leaf salad and the Rainbow salad. The Tea Leaf was full of interesting and some unfamiliar flavors. I was glad to have tried something new but I'd probably go with the Rainbow salad next time. We also had the Mandalay Mango Chicken and the Green beans with tofu, both were great and recommendable. Really enjoyed the service and the quiet dining. I'd go again. ”

“
I was introduced to this restaurant at a friend's birthday party. The staff was so friendly I thought maybe that was what made the food seem so good. I went back and was just as impressed on my return visit. I'm not overly adventurous with exotic fare, but I really like this very comfortable spot. ”

“ My friends have been telling me about this place for years, and it seems that everytime they go, I'm not available. Finally I got the cahnce to eat there, and it was lived up to the years of hype. Particularly the mango chicken. This is the reason my friends go, and when I go back someday, I'll be ordering that and the balada (sp??- which is like a roti bread). I also had some prawns with walnuts, which I liked, but I'll probably want to try something new next time. We were seriously eyeballing other people's desserts, but we were too full to order some of our own. They looked good, and I'm going to try to save some room next time. *UPDATE went on 11/29/06... had the lamb curry, which came with your choice of a bread, coconut rice-which was was very fragrant and tasty, or a safron rice-which I'll probably try next time. Also had the papaya salad, tasty as well, reminds me of the kind of salads oyu can get at thai restaurants-fish sauce, lime juice, roasted nuts, etc. A+ ”

“ Although, the decor was pretty cute, the food left a little to be desired. The chicken satay, was lacking flavor, and the peanut sauce was bland. The mango prawns were ok. I had high expectations after reading reviews, and expected it to be awesome. I am not sure what makes this place so special. ”

“
Tried the tea leaf salad and mango chicken. The curry dishes are also something to try. There no wait here like there is at Burma Superstar and the staff is way more attentive then it is over there. ”

“ I really wanted to like this place! I think Burma Superstar gets way too much hype.
But, unfortunately, I was not impressed. First, our server was curt and anxious. She honestly made me feel anxious as she would ask to take away a dish as I approached the last forkful of various di
shes. She also would abruptly throw new dishes on our table. We had the tea leaf salad, mango and prawns and lamb curry. All of it was just ok. The prawns were tasty but slightly greasy.
We ended with a strange dessert--the orange sticks (for lack of a better description). Theye were tapioca and coconut based (both of which I love) but was just lacking in flavor and the texture was odd.
I probably will not go to Manadalay again...maybe I'm just not meant for burmese food.

“ Four friends. Four dishes. One appetizer. Free dessert. No drinks. Generous tip. Leftovers to take home. $60. Not bad! Even the picky eater among us was a huge fan of the Mandalay special noodles ($7.25): burmese flat noodles with mild coconut chicken, yellow pea powder, lime leaves, cilantro, and crispy noodles -- really creamy and delicious, tossed table-side by one of our wonderful servers. Another favorite was the basil spicy chicken ($8.25), which was surrounded by long tender slices of peppers, onions, and smothered in a delicious sauce. The basil beef was served with fragrant ginger cut almost into straws. Burma Superstar is officially too crowded now in my book. It's just impossible to eat there unless you arrive by 4:45. Since Manadalay is literally three blocks away, I have no reservations about skipping Burma Superstar from here on out. So long Clement Street! Hello California. ”

“ We had dinner on a Sunday at 8pm and fortunately we were seated right away. We had the tea leaf salad for an appetizer which was OK (compared to burma superstar). We had the sizzling lamb which was cooked in some delicious spices but was too greasy. The coconut rice was flavorful and moist. overall, I'd rate this restaurant as an average with much to be desired.

“ burmese food is infused with some thai, some malaysian and mostly indian influences. Amazingly delicious - here's what I'd recommend: Balada with tasty palada, Tea Salad, Spinash with pinenuts, burmese chicken curry and their amazing Mandalay noodles with Tofu. It was tasty and flavorful. I was truly impressed at this restaurant. Service was wonderful and prices are reasonable. You will not be disappointed. I will need to try out their other burmese dishes. Note: there are chinese dishes on their menu but I'd prefer their burmese dish. I can't wait! ”

“ AWESOME!!!
How often do you try food from a country for the first time. How many people do u know that have eaten food from Burma{Myanmar).
The tea leaf salad Lap Pat Dok is like a cuban light and subtle and just as rare. This is a must try if it really is a type of tea. Very nice service.

“ Friendly waitstaff and good food and a great alternative to Burma Superstar insofar as we were seated immediately. Unless you like the unusual and exotic I would steer clear from the dish with the sour burmese vegetable- It's very pungent and has an odd flavor that my palate could not quite come to terms with. ”

“ I enjoyed the beef curry with coconut rice, being new to burmese cuisine I had no idea what to order, so I stayed safe with the beef. I did venture into some of the other dishes at the table, they were all tasty. The service was friendly and prompt, and most importantly attitude FREE :-). They even have a Buda alter which pleasantly ads to the atmosphere “see the photos below” Cost: dinner for three was only $45+tip ”

“ This is A real guilty pleasure! Try the Mandalay Chicken and also Pan Fried String Beans. Spicy, salty, sweet -- perfect! Your mouth will be alive with flavors (just don't step on the scale for a couple of days afterwards!) ”

“ It was quite delicious, thank you. I tried SFMiss' recommendation the Tea Leaf Salad and boy was I pleased! The crunch of the peanuts, the flavor of the crushed shrimp, and the leafiness of the Tea leaves .... it was the oddest combination of taste and texture. It totally worked for me! While eating it I realized I was experiencing the very elusive "New Taste" I've always searched for. It reminded me of the Filipinos' bagoong (stress on the last syllable). We also had the stringbeans with seafood and the curry beef. All very sumptuous dishes. While the waitress was mixing the salad for us she explained that the dish itself and the process of folding in the ingredients, "...is a very traditional dish in Burma, this is what a typical burmese family would have for dinner." With my friend's interest piqued, she asked the server how to say Thank You in burmese. She replied, "Oh, I'm not burmese, I'm chinese." Well, I just had to emphatically reply, "Sheh Sheh Nee!" ”

“ We went here last night and had no idea what to order. I've only had burmese food one other time in my life (at Burma Superstar), so all I knew was to avoid the chinese items on the menu since I can get that anywhere else. We ended up with some pretty good stuff: Mango salad, Sauteed prawns and okra, and green beans (ok that one is kinda chinese, but my bf picked it). Everything went over coconut rice, which I love, and everything had a nice heat and flavor to it. I would definitely like to try a few other things on the menu (catfish curry, tea leaf salad, rainbow salad, coconut noodles), so we'll definitely be back. ”

“ Though not as popular or as recognized as Burma Superstar, I think Mandalay is just as good, if not better. Its decor alone with its Lying Buddha is a sign of its authenticity and make any burmese compatriot feel at home. As for food, the menu mirrors the one at Burma Superstar, but also includes some chinese dishes for those who are not as daring. One thing that is done right and is a must try is their Lepet Dok, Burma's famous tea leaf salad. Another must is their Sui Ji Mok, a dessert made from cassava. The usuals like the Samosas, Coconut Chicken Noodle Soup, and Mohingha (catfish noodle soup) are good. Mandalay is a great alternative to Burma Superstar is you want to avoid the long wait, tight seating and the over-pricing. ”

“ What a find! I kept reading about this restaurant on sfSurvey and had it at the top of my “must visit” list, so when an old friend and I decided to meet for a casual dinner Mandalay was the place. This is one of those hidden gems that have exotic high quality food at reasonable prices. The staff was sweet and welcoming. We started with the Samusa and Lap Pat Dok (Tea Leaf Salad) both were good, however the Lap Pat Dok really stood out. It’s prepared at the table and includes; burmese tea leaves, toasted lentil seed, peanuts, ground shrimp, fried garlic, green pepper, sesame seeds and a lovely light dressing. It’s a traditional dish and a new favorite for me! We also enjoyed the burmese curry lamb and dry pan-fried string beans w/ ginger and chili sauce. YUM! I saw many other dishes I really want to try so I’ll be back soon. The parking was a breeze (maybe I was lucky) and the location easy to find, a green restaurant that says burmese FOOD on all sides. Enjoy! ”

“ This place is so great in every way---excellent food, friendly staff, short wait, roomy and pleasant atmosphere. Try the Tofu walnut Broccoli, shrimp mango, and green beans. Not sure why Burma Star gets so much press. This place is so much better and you won't walk out smelling and feeling like a greaseball! ”

“ Burma Superstar just down the street, which I also love, has food that's a notch better, but there are bigger portions, more selection, better service, and elbow room at Golden Mandalay. The wait isn't as long and they deliver! I like both these restaurants a lot, but sometimes I can't deal with the wait at Burma Superstar, so Mandalay's a good alternative. ”

“ This was my first burmese restaurant and we have always been pleasantly surprised by the consistent quality. Sometimes one has fond memories of a restaurant and going back just shatters the memory. On multiple visits here, we have tried different items and the result is a keen desire to return for more. ”
