“
I could never ever pick a better spot in all of San Francisco. Shimo is my home base for a great dinner everytime. Shimo himself is a kind generous man who always remembers me and his cuts are perfection. I stumbled on Shimo about 10 years ago and have never found its equal. I would always recommend the Power roll. (its a hand roll not maki) ”

“
This place is packed! I had to wait for a while but the waiter was very nice. He gave us seaweed salad, edamame, and sake on the house. We ordered the assorted sashimi, fried crab, oysters, and beef. The assorted sashimi was fresh but I don't like the fried crab as much. The oysters was good and the beef was okay. The miso soup that came with the rice was a bit too salty for my taste. The waiter is very entertaining. ”

“ Needing an immediate sushi fix, we found a space within a block and were enticed by the outside sign What I thought was going to be a sockum, whamo experience turned out to be just ho hum, just another sushi place with locals, schmoozing and loudly greeting everyone as they came in. We didn't discover why this loud, packed place deserved the feeding frenzy we observed. Was there going to be ban on raw fish tomorrow? My fish was passable, not the freshest I have had but also not the worst. The portions were larger than necessary, and for some reason I was presented with two pieces of ahi which were too big for the rice. If I was just eating the fish alone I would be ecstatic but with the rice it just made it out of proportion. The raves of the miso soup were justified, and the rolls were pretty decent. The bill was not a surprise but what was is that two people can actually put away so much fish and rice! (Couple of large Sapporos, may have helped) Service friendly and prompt! ”

“ Torn between neutral and negative. Really not sure how there were so many positives. Had the assorted sashimi. Yellowtail was watery. Salmon was cut the wrong way so it was too chewy and ended up stringy. Tuna was just OK. Toro was wayyy too soft and poorly cut as well. The tai was also cut incorrectly and was way to chewy. We left close to 1/2 of it on the plate. All of the slices were probably double a regular portion...but thats not a good thing. Smaller is better with sashimi. Thinner cuts. The veggie tempura was also just OK, broth was very clean but lacking a bit of flavour. The tempura was too greasy. The rolls were probably the best part but they were mediocre. The place is cute, small relatively friendly service. The miso soup was good. I won't be back. ”

“ Shimo has been a neighborhood favorite for many years for a reason! The fish is fresh and the chefs are talented and friendly. When you order something spicy, it actually comes out spicy. They have original rolls and familiar favorites. Good miso. They are open late and aim to please. Recommended. Enjoy!

“ Fresh, thick cuts of sashimi. They do try and turnover their customers fast, even when not busy. I had the teriyaki beef w/ sashimi. My cousin had the sashimi dinner. Overall good eats and good quantity for the cost. The meals were about $18 came with salad, miso, rice, and ice cream. A little pricey but you do get a good amount of food. Better to go on Mon or Wed. Not so busy. ”

“ You never realize how much you frequent a restaurant until they know your name. I like this place for the variety. Get the Aji and the grilled sea bass when they have it. They also have a good assorted Sashimi dinner that is only $18 and doesn't have fillers like egg and shrimp. The japanese dishes are good here. There are some unusual dishes like the Fried Tofu appetizer, it's got a creamy texture on the inside and chewie on the outside and has a spicy sauce that goes with it. They can get really crowded sometimes and and service suffers so go late....they open until 10 and later on the weekends. ”

“ Hands down my favorite place. If you want the standard fare, go elsewhere. If you want some fun little japanese treats, and are willing to experiment, these boys'll hook you up. My recommendations: the toro tataki, halibut salad (WITH the quail egg), plus their sake and hotate sushi are just the best and most fresh. ”

“ I had already eaten, so I tried a few of my favorite test items. Test items are a way to compare restaurant against restaurant, it's only a measurement of food. I had a SUPER delicious and Ohhh so Flavorful Miso soup; it had an creamy-ness to its viscosity, I think this is due to extra tofu partials in the broth; there were lots of green onion and tofu chunks, I could have eaten five bowls of this :-) . Next I ordered two pieces of sashimi, but then the people next to us had received theirs and the pieces of sashimi were so HUGE, that I just had to up my order to five slices. The sashimi quality was probably a 7 out of 10 “see photo below”; it was not like butter, but close. All in all the place was jammed packed on a rainy Sunday night, and guessing by the buzz, this place make a lot of people happy. This is my number two stop on clement street for sushi and number one for Miso.

“ This is my favorite sushi restaurant in the city. It's not pretentious nor shabby, just delicious, really really fresh sushi. Service is great: a friendly greeting, but none of the excessive best-friend treatment I find truly annoying. The price is reasonable as well: I generally get beer, sake, miso, starter, 4 maki, some sashimi, red bean ice cream, shared between two for $30-$40 each. Favorites: blue-fin tuna, rock-n-roll. ”

“ A fun place to go, rowdy crowd. Opens pretty late for a sushi restaurant. I didn't really venture out from the norm in the sushi dept, but I did get their raw beef which was tasted quite good. I need to go back to check out their bar offerings. ”

“ We sat at the bar with 2 friends of ours and let the sushi chef do his thing. What we got: a really amazing sushi meal with super fresh fish, lots of new and (more exotic) sushi than is usual and a $200 bill. So, if you're looking for an amazing sushi meal and aren't so concerned about the cost Shimo's is the place to go. Also, be prepared for a decent line if you want to sit at the bar. ”
