“ I think Liberty Cafe is slipping. In the past I've enjoyed some of my most memorable meals here, like a simple but sublime pasta dish and a lighter-than-air chocolate cake. I was unimpressed by my last two visits. Nothing really bad, just no magic like in the old days. The room is cozy, and the staff is still amazing. ”

“
A friend's family was in town from New York and we were looking for a place for their last night in town; nothing too overwhelming. On the recommendation of a co-worker (whose food opinions I wholly trust) we decided to try the Liberty Cafe. We were not disappointed. Fortunately, we were there by 5:30 and endured no wait whatsoever (we were the first customers that night) and everything we ordered surpassed expectation. I couldn't understand people raving about pot pie, but I now see why they do it. All the plates were very attractive, and everyone enjoyed their meal. The guy serving us seemed to really enjoy bringing people good food and only helped to make this an even better experience. ”

“ A friend and I had dinner there last night. I ordered the special pasta, which was a wild mushroom with toasted pine nuts and shaved Parmesan. At first I thought it was pretty bland, but after a few shakes of salt, the flavors really came out. My friend ordered the chicken pot pie, and while she said it was great, it too needed salt. I thought that the wines on the wine list were a bit overpriced. The ambiance in the small restaurant is great - you feel just as comfortable as if you were at a friend's dinner party. Unfortunately we were both too full from lunch so that I cannot report on their salad, appetizer or desert menu at this time. ”

“ This review is for the bakery in back. It is soooo cute and the owner (I think she's the owner) is really really friendly and personable. They have fresh baked bread every day (a different type every day), so you can just pick up a loaf on your way home. At night, the bakery is a very romatic place to have a glass of wine before dinner. They have appetizers (and rotisserie chicken i think?) too. They have a little outside seating area for nice nights or if you come with more people. I love it. I haven't been to the liberty cafe proper.

“ Oh! What a positively precious place! I love it. The homey atmosphere makes you want to stay a little longer. The food is so well priced that it's almost astonishing! Please try the pork chop-it has fresh cherries in the sauce, but get there in the next couple of days because i think the menu changes each month! The wine selection is fun also, lots of wines you don't see everywhere else! Try the A to Z cab. it's from Oregon-you won't be disappointed. Oh, and the bakery in back-I want to live in Bernal Heights just so that I can go to the Liberty everyday! Sometimes the wait can be long, but it is well worth it! I promise. And the servers are so, so, so friendly! A nice change! I think they should give lessons to many of the other restaurant servers in SF! Ask for Hugh or Jen-they're great!

“ I have not gone here for brunch, but had dinner with a couple of friends. Because of the popularity of the place, and our desire to relax over a glass of wine, we arrived slightly early for a dinner meal. I like the ambiance and decor, nice, clean and felt like a "nice" place. Service was very polite and friendly. The pace was not fast, and that was fine with us, we planned to have a glass of wine and chat before dinner anyway. I loved the pot pie, chicken. This is not the type of place to come if you want a fairly quick meal, come with a leisurely attitude toward dining and socializing with your friends. It is a little high on the price side, but I felt like the ambiance, the relaxed pace and the professionalism of the waiter made the price worth it. Never felt like they were waiting for us to leave so someone else could be seated.

“ SAVORY ASPARAGUS FLAN , served with field greens -- OMG, it's delicious and one of the best dishes I've ever had. Use the rosemary bread to dip into this one. It served cold and it's just delicious!
ARUGULA SALAD with toasted almonds, Fromage Blanc and roasted red pepper vinaigrette - very nice w/ the toasted almonds
BRAISED PORK BELLY with brussels sprouts and thyme infused maple syrup -- Nice and tasty.
moroccan SPICED BRAISED SHORTRIBS with carrots, mint and cous cous -- I liked this dish, the meat slid off the bones.
VEGETABLE POT PIE with white beans, seasonal vegetables and puff pastry crust -- Very delicious!

“ The mission: I too have been thinking about going to this place because of the reviews (elsewhere), so one day I was in the area and decided to finally make this destination. What a let down!
The Food: To be fair I'll say up front the food is decent enough, not sure about $8.00+ for some french toast though (OK honestly felt slighted by it) it was good, I'd never order it again though. The Eggs bennie were good but again not worth going over there for. Lattes were good enough, as was the hot chocolate. Didn't get to try the Chicken Pot or Banana cream pie though, supposedly their signature dish.
The wait: The wait The wait The wait The wait The wait The wait The wait
Ok wait :) as with other reviewers the wait was UNACCEPTABLE, and I am a very patient person. The place was almost empty, there was a flurry of activity in the kitchen, apparently not any cooking though. At this point I cannot recommend this place, sorry. Maybe I'll try again someday. Peace out ;) ”

“ Pluses: A cute little spot in a nice neighbourhood. The food was pretty tasty, had the eggs bennie--good hollandaise (not always easy to find) and corned beef hash---the best I've ever tried. I usually keep away from it as It always seems like it comes out of the can...but these were nice strips of corned beef cooked with a nice carmelization.
Negatives: SLOW service...it took us about 45minutes to get our food...it was busy...but that is crazy fr breakfast service. The breakfast menu is pretty limited...all of the great items I've been told to try were not on the menu :( I figure you should atleast have your famous banana cream pie available ....oh well.
I might try again...but its not anywhere near my place so it seems unlikely anytime soon

“ I've been dying to try Liberty Cafe for years, but I'm rarely in this neighborhood. Heard about their wondeful pot pies, their amazing banana cream pies so we decided to hit it for brunch on a Sunday. No pot pies, no banana cream pies...but we did share eggs bennedict and the corned beef hash. The eggs benny were okay, the corned beef has was better. The problem was the service...it took them almost 40 minutes for us to get our breakfasts...I was almost tempted to jump behind the counter and whip up my own brunch. I didn't get a chance to try their signature pot pies, so I may give them another go before making up my mind...but come on, 40 minutes to whip up some eggs??
They do have the bakery in the back which turns into a wine bar on evenings(wine tastings not available when we were there), and I had an uninspired ham and cheese croissant. Headed over to Tartine afterwards to right the wrong. ”

“ I used to love this place, but lately I've moved to neutral. Their pot pies are very good, definitely. I've lost interest in their brunch.. too many times my food has come lukewarm and a bit too dry. A neat feature of Liberty is a cute little cottage in the back, where you can get baked goods and drinks. However, the baked goods are so-so and I've sometimes been bothered by flies back there. ”
