“ We had the combination oyster platter, steam clams, and grilled cheese. The oysters were fresh and delicious. The clams were great and I really like the fact that they split it into 2 bowls for the order. The grilled cheese was totally out of this world. The bread was crunchy and the cheese was just perfectly melted. ”

I really want to love this place, but I don't. I've had some of the worst and rudest service I have ever experienced. Went for happy hour once wanting to eat my share of $1.00 oysters when I noticed that the $1.00 oysters are pre-shucked and stored on trays in their fridge. That's just not right for an oyster bar! ”

“ Been to Hog Island when it first opened, at that point it was not too busy and it was expensive. There are other places cheaper, better and that have legendary reputations that I would rather go to.
This weekend, the service we received rude, crass service and it was still expensive. It's sad how popularity can get can affect you the wrong way.
You're better off elsewhere.

“
What a great place to go for after work drinks! My friend and I shared the cheese plate, some oysters and beers. We enjoyed 3 different cheeses (hard, soft and stinky), served with a jelly spread, apples and toasted walnuts. YUM! Admittedly I felt the plate was small for its price ($16), but I've never met a cheese I didn't like so it was worth it. Oysters were fine but I'm no connoisseur. The staff was very friendly and attentive to all of our needs, from keeping our water glasses full to constantly refreshing our bread dish. But then again, there isn't anything better than having drinks and snacks while sitting by the water and looking out into the bay on a clear day! ”

“ We could've eaten 2 dozen raw oysters... each! Freshly shucked oysters are plumb, briny, and oh-so-good. Grab a beer to wash down your meal and watch the ferries cruise in and out of the pier. If 2 dozen aren't enough for you, ask the friendly staff about purchasing a bushel straight from the purveyor. And I think M-Th "happy hour" the oysters are $1 each!!! Call first or view website to verify. I'm definitely a huge fan of their clam chowder, not really a thick chowder but more like soup with a heaping pile of shell-on clams and a creamy, buttery broth. It comes out piping hot. Perfect for these chilly SF nights and foggy afternoons. ”

“ The best oysters in the world! I could eat them every day.
I love the clam chowder too (which is really mostly clams).
The lines on Monday and Thursday for "happy hour" can be very long though (up to 45 minutes). I really like their "fresh greens" salad with mustard dressing (I wish I knew the ingredients/maker of their mustard dressing).

“ We had to wait in line for a bit but not too long. We got four seats in a row looking over the shuckers counter and watched while our mouths watered. Behind them are the windows that open up to the gorgeous night sky, the Bay Bridge and the setting sun. The oysters were as good as they can get. They have Scrimshaw Ale there, which I like a lot. I had a very expensive pumpkin with seared scallops soup which was a whopping $14, but I loved it. ”

“ What can I say that hasn't already been said? Amazingly fresh oysters. Don't skip the kumamotos. They also have some really nice microbrews on tap. We had to wait a while to get an outdoor table, but the man at the helm was very attentive, made sure we had drinks and breadsticks to keep us in tow during the wait. Once our table had reached our fill, we ended up forcing another dozen on ourselves because it was so hard to resist...

“ I LOVE this place. If you had a long day of work, there's no place better to sit back, relax and enjoy some fresh oysters while gazing at the amazing view. There are also many other great selections such as the huge grilled cheese sandwich for those who might not enjoy oysters. ”

“ I love the location of this restaurant, how can you beat a view of the bay while chowing down on some delicious chowder. I suggest that you start with some sweet oysters, if you go during happy hour it's only a dollar each! Continue with a cheese platter and finish off with a bowl of sumptuous chowder.
I guarantee that you'll have a great dining experience. ”

“ The perfect way to spend an afternoon. The ambiance is delightful. The staff is friendly and loves to join the party. If you want a particular oyster (like the tasty Kumamoto)reserve them with your reservation and the staff will put some aside for you. The hogwash barbecued oysters wash down nicely with a Gewurztraminer or a crisp Sauvignon Blanc. ”

“ Hog Island rawks. I have never had a bad experience there, nor had any issues with the staff. If your trying to go on the cheap, they have a happy hour with $1 oysters on tues or thur I believe. And they serve FRESH Acme rolls. Yes, there are cheaper places in the city, but they are not as fresh. ”

“ It's worth it just to sit at the bar and melt into the beautiful view of the bay at sunset...the food is pretty good too. Really nice service, almost like you're at their home, had some excellent sushi, the crab cakes weren't so tasty though. Overall a really nice spot and if the weather permits, sit outside..perfect. ”

“ Gotta love Hog Island...ultra fresh oysters(raw or bbqed) with a friendly staff in the Ferry Building. They always have a decent selection of oysters, and ususally have my fave, the damn tasty kumamoto. One secret is that you can also buy the oysters to shuck at home at a huge discount. I like to share a dozen with my girlfriend, then bring a dozen or 2 back. If you're adventurous one weekend, you can drive up to Hog Island and enjoy the oysters at their facility an hour away. ”

“ I wanted to keep this place a secret, but I guess word is out. Lines for a table (not many in this small space) can be long but worth the wait. I like eating outside in the rain! (Roof overhang keeps you dry plus they have heaters) Nothing like eating a dozen raw oysters and a decadent grilled cheese sandwich (a must) while watching the boats go by on a rainy day. ”

“ Unbelievably fresh oysters of wonderful quality and intriguing variety (some fun baked options). Also occasional specials such as seared scallops which are utterly fantastic. Great clam chowder as well (which is not full of potato starch like you might be used to, but full of clams instead), and the grilled cheese is something to behold. ”
