“ Have been here many times since grand opening in 2005, but I think the food quality is getting worse and worse. I used to love their spinach dish with raisins but now all I can taste is salt. I swear my blood pressure went up after each bite. Maybe the chef should taste his own food sometimes. The only thing that hasn't changed is the pineapple coconut pudding - delightful, moist and warm.

“ The service and subsequent handling should have earned them a neg, but the food managed to overcome it. The couscous salad was very good, as was the chicken salad. The cheese plate was excellent. The Catalan sausage was insanely good, and pulled this one way up out of the dumpster.

“ Really small restaurant. The food was okay. We had the Pig's Trotter and Lomo and Chorizo Plate. I thought the Pig's Trotter was interesting because you get the fat and bits of the chewy tendons. The Lomo and Chorizo plate was not too memorable. ”

“
I'm not generally a fan of small plates (for many reasons), but Bocadillos was okay. I liked the seared tuna and the prawns were pretty tasty. On the other hand, our waiter seemed a bit tetchy and distracted, and he brought our olives at the end of the meal. Piecing together a dinner that consists of a normal amount of food will run into big bucks, but this would be a good choice if you're in the neighborhood and just want a glass of wine and a couple of things to nibble on. ”

“ Sitting at the high table and chair made me feel like Edith Ann, but I liked the fact that thought was given to the hooks placed under the table for hanging your bags and jackets. I concur with other reviews about the Tai Snapper Ceviche, which was over powered with lemon juice. Serrano ham bocadillo didn't have much flavor and the bread is tough and chewy. The Chorizo bocadillo had more flavor, with the same chewy bread. The winner is the warm chocolate cake w/banana ice cream....I could see the steam that formed from the ice cream melting on the cake. I am hoping that Zen Tricky is right and that evening meals are inconsistent. I will give it another chance and fight the crowds at lunch, as the service was attentive almost to the point of being a little annoying.

“ Love it. The atmosphere is great. Sitting at the communal table in the middle is the most fun. Seemed plenty comfortable to me and I am a big boy. All the items we got were fresh and delicious (I have had plenty of tapas in Spain). The Bocadillios (little sanwiches) are the highlight in my opinion. The serrano ham is the bomb. Our group of three left stuffed for a reasonable amount of money. Highly recommended.

“ Everything was really tasty.. the lamb loin chops were good, the calamari dish was also good with the really good dipping sauce that comes with it.. and do not forget dessert! The chocolate cake was SOOOOO GOOOOOD!!!! The coconut bread pudding was not bad either. Not the cheapest but worth it. ”

“ I tried the short ribs as I always do and they were instantly on my "A" list. We tried the spinach with raisins and my comment was, "spinach shouldn't taste this good"! The grand finale was the dessert which was called the Pineapple/Coconut Bread Pudding. I claimed my share of the dessert as my friend was working quickly towards the center. I ended up with a good 2/3's of the dessert.

“ Got the steak, tuna, potatoes, and spinach. Meat was average and seamed like it was loaded with msg or something. VERY salty. Potatoes I loved (salty) Tuna was just wrong. Worst cut of tuna I've ever had. Spinach was decent.

“ If you have tasted tapas in Spain then you would know what I am talking about! In Spain, restaurants get supplies every day, here they buy Friday to last the whole weekend and then sometimes Monday, (never get the fish special on Mondays) The idea is great, the menu variety is great, the presentation great, but the quality of the product leaves a lot to be desired of. For one our scallops were mushy and tasteless, our prawn dish likewise was teetering on too many sunsets. The salads and salsas where good, although if the idea was to copy spanish and portuguese tapas, there's a basic interptretaion mixup. The atmosphere here is confusing also, extremely cramped to the point of elevatorphobia, unless that was the intention, to get every one real close together (soccer game?) My other peeve is that these tiny little plates add up, worse than sushi. 4 people=$224? For that we could have had a nice sit down in a quiet spacious dining room! It is what it is, just not my cup of sangria!

“ Barbara & I arrived at 5:00 PM Friday for drinks and food. I think that Barb made a reservation, as we got a table right away and it was crowded. The crowd was young and peppy and seemed to be enjoying the food. I've been to Spain twice for vacation and have had my share of free bar food, some of it quite good. This place is quite good as well. We tried 8 different plates between us, we drank of couple glasses each of different spanish wines. Wine / food pairing were compatible.
The tables and chairs are perched high in the sky, it is not comfortable seating as mentioned by other reviewers. Prices are a little higher than the other, older spanish tapas places in the city, but I think that the food quality is higher here. Service was timely, cheerful, & knowledgeable. This will be my go-to recommendation tapas place when friends ask. ”

“ This is the closest thing to true spanish tapas I've found in SF so far. The bocadillos with ham was delicious. I saw some people get the patatas bravas which looked good, but I was saving myself for the scallop salad (3 seared scallops with a green salad with radishes & sliced dried mangos), sliced kobe sirloin (juicy!), foie gras roll (I'd prefer something hot but foie gras is still good regardless). For dessert we had the coconut bread pudding (skip it) and the warm chocolate cake with banana ice cream (get this!).
The wine was also good, though the staff was a bit aloof. I'm definitely coming back to try those potatoes! ”

“ "LIFE IS A BANQUET AND MOST POOR SONS-A-BITCHES ARE STARVING TO DEATH!" ...quote from Auntie Mame. Gerald Hirigoyen is a genius chef who shares his classic basque cuisine at his stunning Piperade and at his take on Basque "fast-food" tapas the "small bite" Bocadillos, perfectly bite-sized featuring Basque sandwiches at lunchtime and wonderful tapas plates for evening. Lunchtime Star is the incredible lamb burger, a signature destination dish. Incomparable dinnertime tapas include a stunning cured halibut with meyer lemons and herb crème fraiche brillantly presented and state-of-the-art lamb loin chops with a spectacular quince-date chutney, an exquisite foie gras wrapped in serrano ham and delectable prawns with garlic flakes and lemon confit. Wash it all down with a superb 2001 Allende Rioja. Stunning cheese plate. Marvelous desserts. Warm, loving service. Cutting edge ambience. ”

“ I have visited three times, all were for lunch. The combinations of two or three tapas with a small salad are terrific...go for the lamb burgers for one of them. Also, a very nice selection of spanish wines at fair prices. I like the atmosphere...reminiscent of a Barcelona tapas bar. No nonsense, just a pleasant place to relax for lunch or wine in the afternoon or evening.

“ I first heard of Bocadillos from the instructor of a cooking demonstration, who told us that it was his one of his favorite hangouts. The place did not disappoint me when I first walked into the restaurant. The chic design (chrome chairs with the big communal table in the middle, blonde lacquered wood bar-height table with black square stools alongside the brick orange wall, electric candles mounted on the wall, wine bottles lined tidily along the wall behind the bar, etc) and the spacious and not cramped tables made me feel very comfortable. The food was not spectacular but we did discover some nice surprises (such as the calamari, dungeness crab salad, pig trotters, and the "arm of gypsy"). The prices were reasonable and affordable for the small plates and it is always fun to have many plates of food in front of you!! It is a good place for hangout and for a quick bite without damaging your wallet too deep. ”

“ Alright, Bocadillos makes the Top 100 list so I finally have to try this spot since Michael Bauer's initial review...and it was disappointing. Small and cramped...that's okay...but the food needs to carry this place with all the positive reviews. Our waitress was great, but the food lineup disappointed:
Deviled Eggs aka huevos diablos w/prawns was surprisingly untasty, the scallops were rubbery, and the tai snapper ceviche taste only of harsh lemon. The sliced lomo and chorizo is recommended as well as the flan which was more creme brulee-ish than flan like, but tasty. Tried one the "bocadillos" and it uninspired. Sorry. ”

“ Have been thinking about trying this place forever...and after going thru the TOP 100 a few weeks ago...decided to give it a go. I have NO idea how this place gets on the list? kickbacks??? We tried damn near everything: sea scallops(overcooked---no flavour), tai snapper (WAY too much lemon-overpowering), flatiron steak(blah), sausage bocadillo ( tastes like SPAM), foie gras roll (i liked it, my dining companion didn't. Nicely balanced...yummy buttery foie gras, but not amazing ) prawns & deviled eggs (YUCK...worst deviled eggs I have ever had---& they are hard to screw up in my book), boquerones/olives/artichokes/mushrooms(bland), patatas(basically steak fries..sent them back for being undercooked), lomo&chorizo-cold cuts-VERY TASTY, Caramel Flan-deliCIOUS and I'm not a huge dessert fan. Had some nice spanish wine---try the Dehasa Tempranillo -FABULOUS. Overall I am very dissapointed and won't be back. Too many other great places & the service was very spotty.

“ If you enjoy "cramped quarters", poor lighting, poor design but very good tapas..then this is your place. I did not care for the design one iota, tables against the wall with high chairs, big family style tables with metal chairs(yuk). You had to ask for everything..water, bread, salt and pepper. The utensils are in a container on the table...the bread is so horribly hard and terrible, i will probably have to go see my dentist. Now while we waited by the bar for a seating we were clearly in the way of some blonde waitress with short hair that was 'rude", pushed us, bumping into us saying 'excuse me". I would say if I was the owner ,get rid of her ,she is a disservice to your restaurant! She acts bored and as if she is doing everyone a favor! Our waitress was KIM and she was EXCELLENT! The food was good..potatoes with pimenton, snapper, calamari, steak ...nice. Not a typical spanish restaurant, no sangria,no paella, missing so many authentic tapas. ”

“ Bocadillos means litle sandwiches and they do them well. We had 3 people and ordered several of the small plates and they were all yum, yum, yummy. The buckwheat salad was quite interesting. we enjoyed a lovely Rioja wine from Spain. They don't take reservations, but we were flexible and didn't need to go at the height of lunch rush. it's a small spot but the food and service were great. ”

“ Consistently good food. Great for a quick bite, excellent service, great for casual but upscale business lunches as well as a casual lunch with a friend or two. Table as well as bar seating (excellent service at both) and everything on the menu is excellent. ”

“ This place is just wonderful! The little sandwiches are so tasty, great soups, nice simple salads and good tapas specials. The wine list is really interesting too. Go here before it gets fully discovered, though that might be too late because Bauer gave it 3 stars on food & 2.5 stars on service. ”
