Last night I had dinner at Town Hall with a group of seven other people and was really impressed with the atmosphere and how they were able to seat us right at our reservation time at six o'clock Our server was very friendly and helpful. She was the type of server who gives honest feedback regarding the menu items. For an appetizer, we ordered the broccoli fondue which was incredible. Then we were served some bread to dip the excess cheese in. I might have spilled some cheese on my tie as I greedily soaked up the remaining liquid goodness of the cheese sauce. I had the Rib Eye which was cooked to perfection along with a twice baked potato with jalapenos The portions were very generous and I have to say that I was quite content. Espresso was a nice way to cap off the evening. Also, the wine list was very exhaustive and our glasses were never empty. It worked well as a group event and I would encourage it more for that as it may be a bit on the noisy side for an intimate date. Review #18334

Supposedly the hot “in” place based on the difficulty in getting a reservation for lunch and dinner we called and got in the same day, so much for the hype. This remodeled warehouse is cramped with tables where spaces should be, making the roar of loud talking patrons the norm requiring to shout your order to the attentive waiter. Drinks were ordered as well as appetizers and for some reason the appetizers arrived well before our parched throats were quenched. The tuna tartar was good, but appeared to be pre done since the plate was cold. My calamari that I use as a indicator of things to come, was Ok, nothing special, done perfectly but lacking in any kick of spice that I expected. The short ribs were good, but lacking any wow factor I would expect for the price of the entrees. With the noise and the price I had to pay to endure the meal, I can't give this anything more than a neutral. It was OK, not great, not bad, but I wouldn't return until the noise level was addressed. Good wine list and desserts. Heirloom tomato salad was good, as were the oysters. Lamb duo and pork chop were excellent. It all went far to overcome the shamelessly overcrowded seating, pretty ok service and deafening din. Review #16204

One of San Francisco's great feast houses, astonishing unity of American cross-cultural influences with coast-to-coast cooking styles, New Orleans, San Francisco, you name it, providing high-end food for the sophisticated diner and the blue collar gourmand. As such, the joint's jammed day after day, virtually no discrepancy between style and substance, radiantly warm service, ambience, exquisite wines and scintillating cooking. Awesomely complete menu offering myriad delights including stunning tuna tartare with fried green tomatoes and curried aioli, simply spectacular veal meat balls couched on a bed of ultra smooth mashed potatoes and red wine garlic reduction sauces, superb Duo of Niman Ranch lamb with goat cheese potato gratin, delectable pork osso bucco with truffled corn pudding, state-of-the-art shoestring potatoes. Archetypal butterscotch pot de creme, royally divine decadent destination dessert. All American Ethnic Family Decibels. Spectacular 2003 Murrieta's Well Meritage. Review #16076

I finally went here and I have to say I did like it. The food was well prepared, tasty and verging on original. The atmosphere is elegant in a down-to-earth way, if such a thing is possible. The two times I ate here, the staff did a very good job on recommendations of food (which for me means, among other things, that they didn't always go for the most expensive item on the menu). The wine list was also quite good. Not a cheap night out, but worth it once and a while. Review #15101

We had a fabulous hosted dinner in the private room upstairs**. After passed crab cake and other appetizers, through delicious starters (worcestershire shrimp and decadent veal meatballs), served family-style, followed by a fresh and flavorful tuna tartare, we were full before the main course arrived. However, once my fillet of fish arrived, not to mention the chocolate-caramel pot de creme arrived, somehow, we managed to savor more deliciously balanced flavors. I was truly impressed by the quality of the food, the attentive wait staff, and pleasant and classy yet unpretentious decor. *I will definitely keep this option in mind for special occasions. Classic American Cuisine. Love the atmosphere--it's very east of the Mississippi feeling, and that they save one huge table in the bar for drop ins. Geez I love communal seating. You just don't find enough of that in the US. The Salmon at lunch was great, my friend was a little blaise about the burger Review #13878

Many restaurants either don't make it after a year or their popularity fizzles out and they just become "so-so". It's still not super easy to get a reservation at Town Hall -- and rightly so: the food is great, reasonably priced, good portions, and the service is attentive and friendly. It may take some doing to get a table, but it's definitely worth the effort. Review #13647

A little disappointed here folks. Noisy. Cold staff which acted too busy. Great menu and wine list though. The food was really good but almost predictably so. I most likely will give Town Hall a second try as I didn't seem to feel the magic. Review #13061

I was very impressed with Town Hall. I had a very nice dining experience here with great service, delicious food, and a great bottle of wine. The food is cajun inspired and very innovative. I had a beet salad for the appetizer and the tai snapper for the entree. Both were very delicious and the portion sizes were good. The dessert was definitely the best part. We shared the butterscotch pot de creme (must try) the hot chocolate and warm cookies and the pumpkin cheesecake. All were delicious and the best part of the meal. I definitely recommend it. This restaurant is superb. I went there a couple years ago for a going-away party on the 2nd floor and we had the pre-set meal. It was great. I had the steak, which came with these small, fried potato cubes cooked to perfection. We bumped into former SF mayor Willie Brown, who entertained us with his humor. The atmosphere was lively and the service was attentive. I will definitely go back again. Review #10903

Table for 8--we were seated right on time and were warmly greeted by our waiter. He recommended great wines, helped us order, and made sure our glasses were always full. It was loud, but not as loud as other places I've been. The ham & cheese appetizer and fondue are not to be missed. The grilled shrimp was also good. Pass on the rabbit (too dry), the ribeye was a bit fatty but very flavorful. My scallops were tops. And cinnamon donuts with sharffenberger chocolate filling for dessert. Great company, great service, great dinner. Review #10349

Great food and a lively fun atmosphere. It is quite loud, as the other reviewrs have mentioned, so be prepared for that. We went for lunch and split everything between 4 of us. They waived the corkage fee because we were with a winery, which they did not have to do and was very nice of them. I would definitely go back but not for a romantic dinner. Review #9770

I loved the chandeliers, couldn't stop staring at them. A great combo is the jalapeno corn bread and I loved the jambalaya with adoullie and scallops. I just wish our server hadn't been so listless...it was like he was on some kind of medication and couldn't get out of the fog. Review #9697

I had a special 3-course prix fixe lunch for $20; I started with the butter lettuce and blue cheese salad, simple and yummy. Then I had the grilled chicken and rice, the chicken was slightly over cooked and rather plain. I ended with a strawberry and vanilla bean yogurt type dessert also lacking something. I got the feeling that these were not the best dishes Town Hall has to offer based on the other reviews here. After looking over the regular lunch menu I found some choices that I think would have been much more interesting than what was offered for the prix fixe lunch. When a restaurant offers a special prix fixe, the goal is to attract new repeat customers, so why not offer some of the signature dishes on the special menu and get the new folks hooked and turn them into repeats? My suggestion is to re think the offerings for the special lunch menu, all the dishes had high quality ingredients however nothing I tried wooed me into a repeat visit any time soon. Review #9006

I went for lunch with a friend. Like the interior/decor; friendly waitstaff and generally good service though there were definitely long spells of inattentiveness. Started to bring out entrees out while my friend was still eating resulting in them returning with them to the kitchen and I'm presuming serving them to someone else because it was another 20 minutes until they reappeared with them. The skirt steak with fries and au jus was perfect! At $8-$10/glass for local california wines and $7 for local beers like Anchor Steam felt a little gouged. All in all though, a great restaurant serving great food. Review #8953

Great restaurant earning all the accoldades. Took my GF there for her B-Day and had a great time. The service was excellent as was the cocktails and wine list. We grazed through many tasty apps, and mains. Town Hall is upscale while still being very comfy if a little noisy. Didn't get a chance to try the desserts, but I am told they are divine. If Town Hall is redefining American cuisine, I'm ready to study. Review #6109

The menu would make one salivate, but I wish I could say the same for the actual meal. After reading all the rave from food critics, I had expected the food to be spectacular. It was only above average at best. Don't listen to all the hype bestowed upon this restaurant...walk on by if you have another place in mind. Review #5307

Just come back from dinner at Town Hall tonight and we had a very pleasant experience. The service was attentive without being intrusive. We all enjoyed our meals. The french fries were cold, which were a little disappointing. The food had nice flavours and I enjoyed the casual yet smart appearance of the restaurant. We all ordered desserts which were tasty but EXTREMELY rich. The butterscotch pot au creme was the best but it needs to be shared by several people -- you eat it alone, you may not be able to walk unassisted afterwards. Review #5254

Vibrant colors, brick, rustic wood, huge interesting looking chandeliers and modern paintings in a rectangular space with outdoor patio. Certainly thought about dining outside, but was thinking that cold fog was a coming. Very intersting items - like the peanut-crusted pork chops - almost like eating a Snickers Bar without the chocolate (that comes later) on top of a juicy chop! But, I only got to taste this one, I enjoyed the grilled rib-eye w/ carmelized onions and potatoes in a red-wine sauce...very nice. But don't miss the desserts, especially the banana's foster with fresh vanilla bean ice cream and a luscious rum sauce. Thought about trying the french-style "best hot chocolate in San Francisco" or the smores dessert for two, but maybe some other day. Review #5238

Doesn't really live up to the hype because there's nothing special about the food. The food was good, but there's much better food out there for the same price range. I think I could've even made the same caliber food at home, even though I'm not a good cook. Service was pretty good though. Review #5023
