Tsunami sushi is delicious! It was all great; tuna poki, 5 sisters roll, papa-san roll, 1974 roll, or maybe it was 1776 roll (some date who remembers now...) nigiri, nigiri and more nigiri. The waloo is out of this world good as is the tuna, scallop, and of course salmon, et al. The food does arrive at glacial speed but it was a Friday night and the company was good ; ) so the wait was not really an issue. Our waitress was an absolute doll. The place was packed by 7 and people were waiting for tables so you probably would want to make a reservation. Parking is a bit of a pain. After turning for 15 we found a spot about 6 blocks away. Normally a small trek is not an issue but in 4 inch heels it is. I am not a sneakers kinda girl in the night. Once you stack you can't go back... If you want the night to continue Fly is kitty corner... Tsunami is definitely on my short list of favorite sushi haunts... Review #20868

Cute atmosphere- good service, even though it was packed when I went. Sat at the sushi bar and ordered directly from the sushi chef. We couldn't decide what sake to get, so our waitress recommended two for us to try based on our tastes. Both were excellent and we ended up ordering a couple more glasses. For dinner we ordered the ahi poke, soba salad, and a few pieces of nigiri. The fish was extremely fresh and firm- the most important thing in a sushi restaurant. The poke included greens, which made it like a little salad. I have not been impressed with the quality of sushi at any place in SF until this place. Review #20819

Second visit last night, and I was impressed. Great atmosphere (cool music, but not too loud to talk), and your choice of sit-up tables or sit-down lounge seating. We had mostly a couple of veggie rolls, saba and waloo nigiri, and a great bottle of sake (Nagakawara, nosted for it's "stress-relieving" effects). A much-needed alternative to Blowfish for hip, tasty, fun sushi. 3.5 stars -- I'll be back! Review #18591

What a great find, hip and happening with great sushi (Papa and Mama San rolls are out of this world..). Can be hard for walk in's so advance reservation recommended especaially for the weekend. Prices can be a bit on the high side but worth it if going for the ambiance with friends or on a date. Also, this place owns really cute bar around the corner if you want to continue the party.. Anytime you walk into a sushi restaurant and they have a whole wall filled with sake it gets me feeling good about the place (never mind that I couldn't figure out how they take the stuff down from the wall when they need it). I have been to Tsunami a few times now, and the general impression has been good fish, good presentation, big price tag. The wait staff are nice, the decor is fun and loungey, and the sake selection is interesting. My 2 cents with ordering; avoid the tsunami fries, go with the house hot sake(more reasonably priced), the specialty makizushi was pretty, and "omakase" nigiri and sashimi were solid. Final verdict: A fine place to go and sip it up if you have the bucks to spare and aren't looking to recreate a "sushi in Japan" experience. Review #13631

Save your beans for the sake!!!! and the sushi too of course... I wish I could afford to eat here more often. I love the friendly and helpful bartender! - always willing to show you and tell you all about the sake. Food presentation is great. Atmosphere is small, earthy, woody, contemporary, and fun. Favorite: Seaweed salad and the Alamo Square roll. Review #13395

I just went here for the first time the other night, and loved it. We started off with edamame and the sake sampler. They have a very extensive sake list, which as a sake novice I found very daunting, so it was nice to be able to sample one from each of the 3 different types of sake. They were all really good, but I liked the Daiginjo type best (I think it was called Dragon Slayer!). Next we got the popcorn crab appetizer... tiny little crabs flash fried (not in a batter though). Nice flavor, nothing extraordinary, but lots of fun to eat. For dinner we had the sushi sampler with spicy tuna roll and 5 or 6 other sushi (including yellowtail, tuna, salmon, etc.). It was all delicious and very fresh tasting. We also had the cajun ahi special. My friend didn't like it as much as I did. The ahi was lightly seared with cajun spices on top of a creamy ponzu sauce. The service was very friendly and informative, but lacking a bit of attention during the middle of the meal. Review #9124

The sushi is great. We had the Hamachi and it was "melt in your mouth" good. They have the most in depth sake list I've ever seen in my life and all of the servers are very well-versed in it. We tried the sake sampler, and it was a great new experience. Yeah, our brazilian server was nice too :) Review #6860

I agree, this place is pricey. I don't frequent this place because of that reason. But, I live in this neighborhood and I like what this restaurant brings to Western Addition. Tsunami (an unfortunate name after the disaster) has a chic atmosphere that is sexy and comfortable at the same time. The sushi really is top-notch, but make sure to check out the specials. Once, their special was cubed fish on top of fresh mushrooms cooked tempura style. It was very delicious! The inventive sake cocktails are great, too. It doesn't hurt that the waitresses are cuties.
