I had quite the experience at Alfred's. As I walked through the door I felt like I was transported back to the 1920's, some people might like the atmosphere but I was a little creeped out. I agree that the prices are a little lower than most steakhouses but the food shows it. My steak was tasteless and I had a horrible ravioli side that was supposed to be one of their signatures. I was happy that I tried the place but would rather spend another $15-20 and have a perfect piece of steak. Review #18241

Great food, great value, good atmosphere. I recommend the "City dinner" for $30. It's a good deal for a salad, entree, 2 sides, and dessert. I got to try bites of the salmon, chicken & filet mignon brochettes, mixed & Caesar salads, cheesecake & cappuccino ice cream pie. They were delicious. Our filet mignon steaks were very satisfying, smoky, and nearly perfectly done (my medium was medium well). Well paired w/ a recommended Pinot Noir (by the glass). delicious creamed spinach, garlic mashers & ravioli. Atmosphere was cozy, intimate, quiet. Old school-red leather booths. Appropriate for a serious date or adult family. Service was pretty barebones & we went largely ignored, waiting 15 min b/t each course. The waiter was more occupied w/ his table of 8 ordering several bottles of wine. Had better service in past visits, hence retaining a positive review. Fabulous food, high quality beef @ a lower price point than Harris's, Morton's or Ruth's. Review #16331

I really like this place, proper dry-aged beef cooked on mesquite. I always go for the prince porterhouse, just the right amount of meat, always cooked dead-bang on. Garlic mashed potatoes and creamed spinach for sides, yummy. Have been many times on my birthday, probably because it's so darned consistent. Good pour on the martini, very good wine list, comfortable, quiet room (especially the booths), and fair prices. In every sense a classic steakhouse. Yes, Ruth's and Morton's are good too, but this is a homegrown place, and I give it credit for that. I cannot, cannot understand how Mr. Bauer can slam this place and praise El Raigon. He must not like good meat. I really can't think of anything at Alfred's to complain about, and that's REALLY hard for me. Review #12009

Good service and the ambiance was nice. New York steak was cooked just the way I had ordered it and they have valet parking at the Holiday Inn too! Review #12006

The place had a traditional steakhouse ambiance to it. I like the selection of steaks and alcohol. However, I thought the steak wasn't the best I've had, but still pretty good. Review #11321

One of the two best steak houses in San Francisco...the other being Morton's. It is expensive, but worth the money. You will feel the experience is worth the price. Large 16oz New York is $35 or so and cooked to perfection. Food is top notch, service is impeccable and the ambiance brings you back to the 60's. Caesar Salad cannot be beat and the steaks are terrific. Review #9879

This is about steak cooked to perfection in a great traditional atmosphere. I think these steaks compete very well with Morton's or Ruth's Chris and are better than House of Prime Rib. And the Caesar salad prepared at table is better than the accompaniments at any of the competitors. Service is charming as it should be in a family-run restaurant. Review #9499

A good traditional place. It doesn't try to be faddish. The food is good, it's well presented and the staff are friendly. A nice wine list and reasonable prices for what is offered. Review #9349

Excellent! Everything about this restaurant was awesome! Our waitress was a pleasure, she made us feel like we were at home. We started with garlic toast, calamari and Caesar salad which were done to perfection and just when I thought it couldn't get any better my entree was served. I ordered the Porterhouse which came out just the way I ordered it (med-rare) and full of flavor. For dessert try the creme brulee or the chocolate cake, great wine list as well. Review #8571

This is my favorite steak house in the city. Alfred's when it was in it's old location on Broadway has been a San Francisco institution since before prohibition. In it's new location under the Trans America pyramid they keep the tradition alive. Alan at the bar makes the best Martini which I follow up with the Caesar salad made table side, The Chicago Rib Eye Rare and gotta have their cheesecake! Review #8040

Alfred's is an old school steak house that needs some updating. The interior is old school and the steaks are okay...but you'll get a better steak and overall meal @ House of Prime Rib, Mortons, Ruths Chris and Harris. Review #7134

I liked the "Old World" atmosphere. It feels like a scene out of the Titanic. The steak was very good - just this side of great. It's a bit hard to find if you're not familiar with the downtown area, therefore, not a great place to meet friends. Overall, I enjoyed it. Review #5476

I've only been for dinner, but several times over the years at both locations. This is absolutely Hitchcock old school! Staff is too old-timey to be stuffy. If you want a dinner out of the 1950s in an atmosphere your grandparents thought was elegant this is it! Caesar made at your table, 64 ounce Porterhouse (the 2nd one is free) and red red red decor. Have a seat at the bar and talk with Rocky, the bartender. Ask about the scotch in the basement. Review #3161

The decor in Alfred's is very nice and gives a San Francisco feel. The staff was very attentive, but got a little flustered during a busy lunch time. I ordered the Salmon and Fries which was just about average. I think the best part about this restaurant is the atmosphere. I was able to overlook the bug crawling out from under the pepper grinder.
