This has delicious cafeteria soup kitchen style food! I despise cafeteria soup kitchen style food! Between the dust on the walls and the antique men weating hats, leaning on canes and with their trousers 12 inches below their neck this place is too old. The food is awful, simply awful. The redemption of the time to come here was provided solely by the alcohol. Review #19732

If there's one thing I can't abide is a line. The routine here is so wrong, it's maddening. It's as if they figured out the most gimmicky way to do it, and stubbornly resisted improving it at every opportunity since. Here's an idea - Walk the customer by the chow line on their way to their table, seat them, get a few drinks in them and then take their order, and then -- serve it to them. I hear there are a few places trying this new 'waiter' thing and it might just take off...The food was ok, but I'm sure I would have enjoyed it more if it didn't feel like poking someone in the eye with a fork by the time I sat down to eat it. What can I say about this place (sigh) Once was enough! We went including a cousin that reviews venues for city search". After waiting in line & seeing one of the carvers adjust himself, we all looked at each other shook our heads and said " Do not think so". Now this coupled with a guy helping us all out with our plates, when it was clear we could manage..dangit were men". This guy had his fingers in our food..." AH HELL NO". I think the food is okay for fast cafeteria type. This place does not look real tidy or clean in our estimation, but heck their were a ton of people...so its not all Tommy's joints fault. Really this place is a landmark and a legend in SF. It is unfortunate the night we picked to go...we saw plenty of other stuff that was not a good representation. Suggestion, try to appear cleaner as a whole and have your help be cognizant of their actions while serving or carving meat. Come on we are talking food here guys..people watch. I think Tommy's can do better! Review #18602

To put it simply, you really have to go to Tommy's Joynt once in your lifetime if you've spent any significant portion of it in San Francisco. I went a few months ago by myself when I was hungry and in the neighborhood killing time before a book event. From the flashy 1970s painted sign on Geary to the mildly sports-bar exterior, I thought it was essentially a big sandwich shop that had booze. I couldn't have been more wrong. The clientele, at 6 in the evening, were SF's oldest old timers, dawdling men who were 102 if they were a day, and women fashioning the "nun slouch" pantyhose look. Early bird special? Yes please. I ate a sausage, which was little more than a hot dog, on a bed of pucker-inducing sauerkraut with a roll and a plain, peeled boiled potato. I dabbled bits and drips of hot mustard from a miniature mustard pot onto my sausage. I sat in a creaky wooden chair. The table was set with a red and white checked plastic tarp. And the whole room, huge as it was, felt warm Review #18500

This is cafeteria style food, period. The interior decor is "fun," - lots of stuff stuck all over the place - the place is darkish like a pub, it is a bar. The tables are long enough to seat 4 to a side and are covered with red and white vinyl tablecloths. You get your food at the hot table and take it to your table on a tray. The wait staff comes and takes your drink orders. I had the turkey ala king over mashed potatoes with a dinner roll for $5.85, no drink. There was a ton of turkey and 2 healthy scoops of mashed potatoes. The flavor was perfectly fine for a cafeteria meal. My brother had the spaghetti and meatballs. He was happy with it, but his bar is not very high, it looked like the spaghetti was very soft to me, certainly not al dente, but this is hot table food. Our waitress was a mid 20's female, friendly and efficient in keeping my brother in the booze. I might stop in on a cold rainy day as the place feels warm. Fun, casual, and reasonably priced. The lasagna I ordered was quite good, but I had some serious food envy - next time I'll order the buffalo chili or stew. Mmmmm. Review #14972

Definitely not a place to bring dates. I went there once and I wasn't too impressed with the food and the restaurant. It's unique but looks kinda dirty. However, this is the best place to get Thanksgiving meal if you don't want to spend all day roasting turkey. Review #14773

Old & tired. If you like cheap cuts of steamy meats hof Brau style, this tourist trap may please. I think that it's yucky. After I ordered the roast beef with starches, the only saving grace was the Anchor steam beer. And there are way better beers made in the bay area than Anchor Steam. Hey, here's a suggestion.... If you like this kind'a food, save $9. Go to the St. Vincent de Paul soup kitchen for the homeless. It's about 10 streets from Tommy's Joynt. Same "cuisine" probably made from more healthful ingredients. Review #14299

If you are a meat eater and have an appetite Tommy's is it, this place rocks! Plus it really does have an impressive international selection of beers. I like the beef stew or the corned beef and cabbage. I don't think you can really go wrong with anything. It's a chill, laid back atmosphere, not pretentious at all. Review #14051

we all went in for a late night drink after a bad movie nearby. no one ordered food, so i can't speak to the taste of the food. i can tell you the food smelled really good, though. and i can tell ou that the wait staff was quite friendly and brought everything we ordered, correctly and quickly. for what we were there for, i liked the place. we didn't feel rushed at all and the music wasn't so loud that we couldn't hear anyone else in our group talking. it was fun. What’s not to love? A veritable buffet of meats with all the sides, cheap beer and drinks, and an atmosphere that just screams “come and sit a while.” Sure, it’s half turn this side of “fancy” or “gourmet,” but there’s a little something wonderful about this place that just can’t be found anywhere else. I'm downgrading on this review for one reason only--they've raised the prices A LOT! Aside from that, I've been eating here for 20+ years and I love it. This is my definition of comfort food and I especially like the place when the fog rolls in or it's raining. Still, my regular selection, the brisket and a bowl of bean soup, seems like it's gone up by 40% or so since I was last there, making what was a $7 meal (with beverage etc) now a $9.00+ meal. Note: This is a place to make vegetarians run screaming into the night so meat-eaters only, please. Review #8985

Damn you guys haven't had the pastrami sandwich or the corned beef sandwich.. their sandwiches rock. If your hungry and don't a great slab of meat and a wide range of beer and drinks then do come to tommmy's. If your one of those stuffy pelegrino loving cafe only types then this isn't the place for you. Its dark, down home, cheap , fulfilling and a comfortable place to chill for a meal. After a night of clubbing and drinking nothings better than a pastrami sandwich. Review #7556

Although the place has a dark, pub-like ambiance and cafeteria style of ordering, the food is great depending on what you order. The cooks are usually nice but the waitresses seem like they don't want to be there so better off to order your drinks while you're still in line with your food. I love the special braised oxtail with pasta and the lamb shank is always good. Nice place to grab a quick bite before catching a movie across the street. Review #7051

It was either Tommy's Joint or a burger , so why not try this old SF tradition? The place looks dingy inside and so do the employees. The sandwiches are ok, the meat looked grey like it was overcooked but it was still tough. The only way I could eat my hard bread was to pour the au jus over it, so maybe they do that on purpose, You Think? Macaroni salad had no taste, but the brewskis were cold! It was cheap so I can't cry too much. Mac's is way better for sandwiches! Review #5243

Tommy's caters to the crowd that feels quantity is more important that quality. That's ok if that's what you're looking for and for that I gave the positive rating. Good cheap food served cafeteria style - only go if you're real hungry. Haven't been in a while, but I remember the brisket sandwich with tangy barbecue sauce was inviting. Go on one of those cold rainy days if you can, then head to AMC-1000 for a flick. Review #5240

Cheap Date #1: Tommy's and AMC Theater across the street. Get the dinner plate, super cheap $6, I prefer the pastrami and corned beef to the beef brisket, ham or turkey. Mashed potatoes are the watery nasty kind with an au jus/gravy, unless you specify turkey gravy. My favorite pastime is to make the surly servers smile. I can never finish my plate. The sides are so so, it's all about the MEAT! The bar is fully stocked, great old bartenders, lively atmosphere. Quick service. Review #4459

I don’t know why anyone would come to Tommy’s Joint anymore? I was in the city a couple of months ago, and decided to stop by and get a sandwich. My last visit had been in the mid 70’s and since the place has been here forever, I was salivating for a sandwich and salad. To my horror, the quality of the food had gone from great to poor. I guess nothing stays the same except for the original crap on the walls and stuff. My sandwich was filled with gristly meat, cold, on stale bread. The potato salad had no taste and the Cole slaw my wife had was even worse. Her sandwich, a roast beef has minuscule portions of meat not even filling the hard bun that came along. This place was always good, but 25+ years has changed the place. From coming here 4 to 5 times a month to never again! A definite no go! The beer was ok! Review #4022
