“ SO MANY CHOICES!!! I sat for about 10 minutes trying to decide between about 5 things on the menu- all sounded delicious. I settled on a smoothie and a bowl of coconut noodle soup. As soon as I saw the guy get a bowl of chili and a green salad next to me, I wanted that!! It all looked SO YUMMY! Anyway, I got my food very quickly and was satisfied with my selection, after all. The smoothie was fruity but not too sweet like so many are. The soup had mushrooms, pineapple (interesting and good addition), carrots, tofu, bean sprouts, thai noodles, and a coconut milk base. It had really good flavor, but was WAY too much food. For the price, they stuff you! At least that was my experience on this visit. I can't wait to go back and try something else. ”

“ Herbivore is like a little black dress: you can dress it up or down, and even people who don't wear dresses (like macho men) appreciate it for what it is. Herbivore is a vegetarian grill restaurant with an abundant, albeit scattered, menu comprising a shwarma, a burrito, an Indonesia noodle dish, and vegan desserts. Despite its mixed bag of tricks, Herbivore turned out a yummy and cheap dinner for my friend and I the other night. We had drinks, an appetizer of zataar on toasted bread, one dessert to share, and came out just over 50 bucks. I could have done without the grilled seitan in my shwarma ($7.25), or perhaps tempeh instead, but my friend's lentil loaf (more like lentil patty, really) with mashed potatoes and mushroom gravy was lovely ($9.95). Both came with salad, and I was happy to see Blue Moon and Fat Tire on tap. Service wasn't particularly strong, but not poor enough to keep me from returning. ”

“ I like it...but my husband does not. I think it is a good value for healthy food. He thinks it tastes bad and is a bit over priced. I think it is relaxed with good service. He thinks its up tight with slacker/snobby service. I ordered the asian noodle salad. He ordered the lentil loaf. I give it a neutral rating based on our two experiences.

“ There are several things on the menu that I think are really good, not just for a vegan restaurant, but for any restaurant. For example, the veggie kung pao features perfectly-grilled broccoli, peppers, onions, etc. , plus some nice chewy tofu. I just wish it were a bit spicier. For lunch, the veggie burger is about as good as such things get.

“ My husband tries to eat veggie as much as possible, so we have tried Herbivore a number of times. It is definitely a vegan restaurant, and the choices for the menu can sometimes be odd. Don't offer lasagna when you won't use cheese (soy cheese doesn't cut it). There is a good assortment of wraps, sandwiches, hot entrees, and pasta dishes. I do really enjoy the vietnamese spring rolls. However, I find the peanut sauce served with them and the tomato based sauce used for the pastas are used frequently as the main flavorings. The staff is not very friendly (maybe I'm not hip enough), and certainly was not kid friendly. My son is well behaved and I often take him places to have an appetizer and fresh juice while I have a glass of wine. This restaurant seemed surprised we were there. I'd go back with my husband and some vegan friends, but I wouldn't bring non-veggies to Herbivore. I don't think they'd thank me for it. ”

“ i've only had good experiences with their food. the service at this one is definitely better than the service in the mission. and the desserts are fabulous. i rarely buy desserts at restaurants because i always see them as overpriced and rarely good, but the carrot cake here is truly fabulous. i enjoyed their tacos and the veggie appetizer. i do think their a little expensive, but not so much so that i would say it's not worth it. i go fairly often. ”

“ Another disappointing experience at the vegetarian restaurant…. The Lemongrass noodle lacked flavor and the portion was smaller than what I usually get for the rice noodle dish at different places. The Shawarma wraps was good but also petite. Nice atmosphere for the vege restaurant, though. I rate 5 out of 10. If you'd like to have a descent vege meal, I recommend you to go to a non-vege restraurant and order some vege dishes. I’ve been having way better experiences that way. ”

“ love the vegan carrot and chocolate cake! i have given herbivore a lot of tries and tend to be not so impressed with the food. steer clear from the pasta dishes and breakfast. i have had a good grilled vege sandwich. all and all i give it a neutral rating because i just don't get consistently good meals. come for dessert. ”

“ I'm very sad about this Herbivore (divis street). It used to be a vibrant, delicious place to go. Now the food and service are both "so-so." I think they had an ownership change about 6-8 months back and it was VERY noticeable. ”

“ I getting pretty tired of places that don’t deliver product while charging prices that are sufficient for proper freshness and quality. The first bad vibe was that the place was almost empty. We came here because this place was conveniently close for a vegan evening. My Lasagna was dry and chewy so much that the pasta looked like it was made several days before and was simply reheated over and over drying out the ends of the pasta to the inedible point. The lasagna was also disappointingly petite for the price of the portion. My friend’s indonesian noodle salad had dark pieces (rotten) of cabbage and old mushrooms that were past their prime. The wait staff was inattentive and lacking of any hospitality or a gleam of friendliness (grumpy). With so many other quality places serving vegetarian dishes, this is a definite no more, sorry, sayonara, adios. The only positive experience here was the Anchor Steams! ”

“ The food here is hit or miss -- the best dishes, like the sandwiches and wraps, don't try to get too creative. It always seems to be a little cold and the seating is incredible uncomfortable. Still, I'm giving it a positive rating because it does quite a lot with vegan food, and some of the deserts are surprisingly good. ”

“ The food here rocks! if you can get over "the hood" and the challenging parking, you will not be disappointed. Go with a fellow veg head, or just someone who can appreciate a good healthy meal. ”

“ I really adore their Sweet and Sour soup and the Spring Rolls. yum! plus, the service is better here then in the Mission branch.
The scoop:
sweet & sour noodle soup 6.25
rice noodles, tofu, spinach, carrots, broccoli, tomatoes, pineapple, bean sprouts, oyster mushrooms, green onions and cilantro
vietnamese cold spring rolls 5.50
with dipping sauce ”

“ honestly, i really want to like herbivore. the truth is that i have been consistently unimpressed with their entrees. it just hasn't tasted as though they have really gotten the flavoring down, particularly with the noodles. on the other hand, the vegan carrot cake and chocolate cake are both really darn good. ”

“ The chocolate cake was excellent, but I thought the entrée was just okay. It was bland & after about 5 bites I didn't want anymore. Also, the dated reggae music was a bit annoying. The service was good. ”

“ I have returned to this place several times just hoping it will get better. I really want to like this place. But I continue to be disappointed with both the food and the service. The food can be unexciting and not always freshly prepared. I didn't sense much concern over providing good service or food presentation. ”
