“
This is a great place for dinner before a movie at the new mall or metreon. The rotisserie chicken with the warm potato salad is awesome. They have shared plates, so it's great for friends and not for business. One important thing to note: I had the best dirty martini ever here. I'm still thinking about it! ”

“ Recent visit: Dec, 06. Party of 3. T'was the day before Xmas, we went to LuLu at 11:30 for a Sunday brunch. We had the whole place and staff to us. Ain't that special? The leek, goat cheese and bacon (italian wild boar) tarts were refreshingly good. The cheese was aged well, not too strong, nor salty. That could certainly convert a non-goat cheese eater. The small cubes of boar bacon were not as salty or dry like typical prosciutto. The mediterranean pizza lived up to their thin-crust specialty. Generous toppings of prosicutto and sun dried tomato, with modest use of extra virgin olive oil. The aroma of garlic from the open-grill kitchen and wood-fired oven actually titillated our senses and appetite. My omelet with slices of Virginia ham was distinctly tasty. All 3 dishes were nicely presented. We were pleasantly pampered by several servers during our meal. With the previously neutral and negative reviews in mind, were we lucky, or we hit at the right time? (3 stars out of 5) ”

“ My experience at Lulu comes entirely from one night at a party hosted there. I did not get the full dining experience, but I can weigh in on the finger foods. pizza was thin, crisp, and topped with an array of thinly sliced vegetables, my favorite being zucchini. The unpalatable fried risotto balls tasted like latkes that had been left unsalted, rolled into golfballs, battered heavily, and deep fried until a beautiful but deceiving crust developed. Several crostini were served, but the bread was cut too thin and too dry to fully enjoy. The wine we were served was mediocre. All in all, I wasn't wowed by anything, though the pizza earned a better than average rating. I would try Lulu's for a seated meal if someone else were insistent on going. ”

“ I believe in evaluating a restaurant relative to its price. If you're going to drop over $100 for a 2-person dinner including only a couple glasses of wine and no dessert, you should have your socks knocked off. Mine weren't. The appetizer (baked chevre) was greasy and just okay. The pizza was not as good as others (Pauline's, Pazzio) that I've had, despite being their "specialty". Just not worth it. Granted, I didn't have the mussels which are their specialty, but nevertheless, given the $120 bill, I was unimpressed.

“ Not my cup of tea, I suppose. It's a bit too hip for me. I tend to gravitate more towards the elegant but welcoming restaurants, of which there are many in S.F.
This particular restaurant had a little bit of an uppity attitude. An air of distain, perhaps. IMHO, it's not the kind of place one would feel comfortable if they were, oh, say....me.
But the above complaints are not so bad that I would give the retaurant a negative rating. In fact, the food was fair. The prices? That's debatable. But it's quite popular, and I doubt they'll miss me if I don't return soon. ”

“
Went here on a Fri night and hung out at the bar. Had a really good time and the bartender was very helpful. Came back on Sunday night for the prime rib special and it was excellent. They also have a very nice wine list. Not a cheap place, but I think its worth the $. Service was also very good. Not sure what the noise problem is. It's a big place, so sure it can get loud, but I did not have a hard time with that. Can't wait to return. Yumm ”

“ I had never eaten here, and while I wasn't expecting Chez Panisse or Zuni, I did expect at least a fair swing at good, clean California cuisine. Whatever the reason, it felt like they were slinging hash for the Moscone conference crowd. Our appetizer plate was largely tasteless (some sort of pale pate, overcooked, mealy beets). The server offered to fillet my fish, and then basically dumped the meat on my plate. A second server returned a few minutes later with "the rest" and dumped that on top too. It tasted fine, but it was more fast-food than anything else. The espresso was good, at least -- but I won't be going back. ”

“ Barbara & I ate lunch here yesterday. She had the half chicken on mesclun, & I had the pork loin sandwich. The food was good. Our young server who was a Toby MacGuire look-alike was gentle, kind, attentive, unhurried and competent. The house was > half full at 1:30pm. We sat closer to the front windows on left side of the room (Above the main dining "pit"). We did not experience the sonic punishment mentioned by several other reviewers. The noise level was lower than most lunch places. I do repeat the warning for fellow Reactive Airway Disease sufferers as mentioned by other reviewers. The sharp sting of mesquite wood smoke greets at the door. You do not see smoke hanging in the dining room air. I immediately had some "chest tickles" & more throughout the meal, the smoke is an irritant. Late that afternoon I had a full-dead-on asthma attack, the worse in many months. I'm sure that the wood stoves in LuLu smoke was the culprit. Got Asthma? Avoid Lulu! ”

“ This is the only restaurant I can think of where the food is tasty and the service is perfectly fine and yet I have taken a solemn oath never to return. Why? The last time I ate there with a friend, our conversation went something like this: "I'm going to order the mussels." "What?" "The mussels!!" "I'm sorry I can't hear you." "Never mind." "What?" The dining room should actually be called the dinning room because the din is earsplitting. Maybe the acoustics are better in other parts of the restaurant, but where we were sitting (near the center) it made for a very disagreeable evening.

“ I had a blast here! The salmon entree with roasted corn and tomatoes was amazing. I could have eaten multiple portions of the veggies. I did leave smelling like the restaurant though, (because of the wood fire grill). ”

“ This is not the same Lulu's that I went to when it first opened back in the 1990's. The food is much, much better. I supposed that nowadays, the trend is either small plates or family-style dining in restaurants. Lulu does both styles, but concentrates mainly on large plates to be shared at the table. The vegetable appetizer was prepared exquisitely. What followed were some of the best tasting grilled sirloin steak and pork loin. The only flaw is the service, which was pretty slow. The waitress was not as attentive as I would expect. But overall, I had an enjoyable meal. ”

“ I went here for a light lunch recently. I wanted something light so ordered the tomato soup and the waiter recommended the watercress salad. The soup had a good flavor and tasted like fresh tomatoes were used to make it. The watercress salad was tasty and had nice, crisp pear slices in it. We had a pumpkin tart for dessert, which had a nice, flaky crust. My only criticism is that refills on drinks seemed to take a long time. Overall, though, a good experience. ”

“ been here only once a few years ago as my boss at that time took me here for lunch. they have decent food, but what was annoying was the fire roasting going on...you not only smelled it while you're eating BUT you will smell like like that when you leave...not a good thing! ”

“ i had 2 good experiences here. once i sat in the main dining room at a tiny table. the other time at the bar. if you're with a friend, definitely go for the bar. it's entertaining watching the bartenders do their thing and the service is better. the food is very good, a cross between french/cali cuisine. we had the mussels, goat cheese/olive spread over crostinis, the lamb shank, yum, and the desserts were very good too. there's always a lot of action going on, and it's fun to try their dishes along with the wine sampler. it has a warm and inviting feel, no snobby staff. the restrooms are clean. ”

“ Lulu just doesn't quite make it over the hurdle for me. All of the grilled meat dishes are tasty, but there is just nothing here that makes coocoo to want to come back. ”

“ Nice place for large groups since they serve family-style. The decor is simple and open. The food wasn't as good as I expected but the oysters were terrific. Martinis were good and service was okay. A bit pricey for the quality. ”

“ Lulu was my first favorite restaurant in SF. Used to come up from the peninsula every couple of months. They have amazing roasted meats (you can watch them spitfire all the cuts in their open kitchen), great pizzetas, oysters, pretty much everything is solid. Expansive dining room can be a little noisy, but it's a good scene. Highly recommended. ”

“ Lulu's always offers a satiating meal with the off-chance that it can be truly excellent. I once had the best Mozzarella Cheese here of an ooooh amazingly tender consistency and texture. They never quite delivered it again, but then neither have a dozen other restaurants that I frequent ever come anywhere close. Other favorites are the baked mussels and grilled sand dabs. The airy ambience is a nice departure from the oh-so-common cozy interior of most restaurants. ”

“ Lulus was my favorite restaurant when they opened in the 90's(I just graduated from USC) and we used to go several times a month. The bar action was good, and the food was always solid(although my palate has changed from my college days). I stopped going as often a couple years ago, but recently started going back. Lulus is still a fun restaurant with good offerings.
Kumamoto oysters, roasted portobello mushrooms over polenta, great thin crust pizzas, oven roasted mussels on the iron skillet, rotisserie chicken, pork loin, grilled rib eye, etc. Great wine list and great drinks...It feels like I'm falling in love with an old girlfriend I haven't seen in awhile.
Lulus is still a solid bet. ”

“ Ahhh, the smell of the meat cooking on the rotisserie and grill as you walk in teases you until the food arrives. Consistently good food and drinks. It's easy to forget about this place, but I'm always pleasantly surprised every time I go. ”
