“ Average french bistro with all the classics one would expect. I choose the large Mussels Provencale with herbs, cherry tomatoes and nicoise olives ($14) for my lunch. The mussels were on the small side and quite a few were closed, however the flavor of the broth was perfect. I thought that the portion size was small and should have come with frites or a salad for the price. My friend got the small mussels ($8) and another small plate; her mussels were almost the identical portions size as mine for almost half the price. The service was accommodating, friendly and on the ball. FYI: they offer an early bird menu (5:30-6pm) 3-courses for $25, which seems like a good option for the area. I would not rush back when there are so many great french bistros in the city. ”

“ Chez Papa Bistro, Had lunch here a week ago. Very nice! Second time here. Staff is very french and pleasant. My Salade Nicoise was done with fresh seared tuna, quail eggs and so forth - a new take on a traditional dish and it was good. My friend had the beet salad which he said was excellent and the frites, which I tasted and they were some of the best I've had in San Francisco. The restaurant can be very noisy - it is small and lots of hard surfaces. But noisy restaurants seem to be very common now, so we have to accept it. All in all, I recommend a visit here - you will enjoy it. ”

“ If I could give this review a title, it would be "Chez p**poo." The food is generally out of season, flaccid, greasy, bland and overpriced. The staff is charming and the location lovely. However, I always leave feeling bitterly ripped-off and resentful. The salads consist of limp, slimy, browning "greens," tastless, oily dressing and accoutrements which exude refrigerator. (For example, the sparse, $14 niçoise- ouch!) I am shocked to read positive reviews of their frites, which are consistently pale and soggy and come with a similarly insipid "aioli" (how can mayo + garlic = bad?) I once ordered a salad which poetically claimed to contain "new potatoes, baby artichokes and a dijon vinaigrette," but arrived as a bowl of oil, "flavored" with overcooked potatoes and mustard. No salad, no chokes.
Please, don't become another deluded diner at "Shanky Papa"-- do yourself a favor and go to Aperto instead, where the food is honest, seasonal and genuinely delctable. ”

“ March 29, 7:20pm. Welcome to the Beforetime! Mariposa & ? was the locale of the Daily Scoop for 25 years. Friendly owner, snice table with minimal shmoozing needed. Shout out to Fof for making snice of the wine "situation". Tagline: Know your Ps and Qs (or you may send the wait-staff into a frenetic frenzy. Bread: hmmm not so much, a little TARDE. Menu: Tuna Tartare w/ sesame oil, etc etc, Artichokes stuffed with goat cheese and pancetta (absolutely delicioso), Scallops w/ champagne beurre blanc, Frites with aioli (julienned, perhaps not the right approach but tasty), Viogner. Could be a little hotter. Tartin: "off the hook". PowerTrip o' the Night: I could sooo turn the lights out! Overall: Very snice!!! ”

“ What's all the fuss?
We went for lunch to this french bistro in Potrero Hill, and though the service was efficient, and the atmosphere cozy, we were quite disappointed by the taste, portions, and cost of the food.
We had two appetizers and the soup du jour. We started with the artichoke sliced in quarters, stuffed with goat cheese and wrapped with prosciutto ($9). We were shocked to see it was a baby artichoke, was mildly-flavored and barely able to fill the medium-sized plate. Then we had the open mushroom ravioli ($10). The mushrooms were rich in their own sauce but covered by a paltry wonton-like cover, not wrapped like a ravioli. Now, remember, this is lunch, and we're already at $19. Last, we had 2 bowls of spinach soup ($5 each). All I can say about that is to think of half bowls of watered-down frozen cream of spinach, with pretty specks of paprika, and moments of delicious, grated asiago, which gave the soup a bit of flavor. We left hungry and will not return. ”

“ Irresistible, Irrepressible, Unsinkable Joie de Vivre greet you at the threshold with enchantingly bubbling reception, ambience and service followed by delicious cooking to boot. Space is itself erotically charged with appealing wooden interior and large glass windows viewing the City. Then legions of ultra peppy waiters themselves bubbling over with smiles and warmth guide your every whim. Marvelous stand-out dishes include a delectable vol au vent containing scallops and lobster in a tarragon saffron sauce, ultra creamy and delicious foie gras, delectably rich and satisfying tuna tartare, fat and juicy steamed mussels in garlic white wine and cream spiced up with french fried shoestring potatoes in addictive aioli sauce on the side. Enticingly smooth meyer lemon panna cotta all washed down with a superb Napa bargain red, NV Cain Cuvee. Out for a snack or there to wash your blues away, within moments your very own spirits will be bubbling over like the most effervescent champagne. ”

“ Great bistro fare--go for the fries! And you can never fail with the foie gras appetizer or the beet salad :) For dessert, try the clafouti (almond cake with black cherries) and the best cup of coffee I've had in the U.S. Damn good coffee. If you're looking for something romantic, this isn't the place though--accoustics are kind of weird. ”

“ I may be biased because I live in Potrero Hill where this restaurant is tucked away from the hustle-bustle of the city, but for those of you who don’t live in Potrero, Chez Papa is worth the visit! On my first of two experiences, the restaurant was late to seat us for our reservation because of a snotty, irate customer who demanded a seat immediately. Being laid back, we figured, no worries. As a thank you, we were treated to a fabulous glass of wine and excellent appetizer, all while we waited on the park bench outside the restaurant. Fortunately, I’ve had the pleasure of sitting both outside and inside the restaurant, both wonderful atmosphere.
I am not a fan of french food, but the food is amazing. Seasonal appetizers make the choice difficult. Light to hearty meals cater to everyone, and a delight for all taste buds. The staff is incredibly nice and very helpful in selecting a bottle from their fantastic wine list to match everyone’s meal.
Definetly treat yourself to Chez Papa ”

“ Went here recently during a whistle-stop trip from London. Food was absolutely superb: Beet Salad, Tuna Tatar (stunning), Ahi Tuna Poivre (unbelievably stunning), and a bottle of Chateau de Nages. The staff were great, we sat outside (a shame, perhaps, but the evening was really balmy and the views of downtown were magical). Will definitely re-visit at a later date. ”

“ My single favorite french bistro in the city, no one is even close. They focus on Provencale style cuisine and they have perfected it. There isn't a single miss on the entire menu, and in my 6 visits, I have tasted it all. Lunch is just as good, and a little less hectic, but it is always crowded. Try working your way just through all the appetizers, its a worthy journey. Mussels are amazing, as is the steak tartare, and they always have a bouillabaise-inspired dish which is amazing. You can go the steak-frites route here as well, and it's great, but you would be missing out on some of the more special flavors you can experience here. Very cute french staff too... ”

“ Chez Papa Bistrot is blocks away from my house and I enjoy dining here. The food is creative, the waitstaff is friendly (and handsome, and the atmosphere is fun. The acoutics are strange in this little space...even when it isn't packed to the gills (which is a rarity it seems), the place is MEGA LOUD! But if you're out for a fun evening with friends, it's not so bad. If you're out on a romantic dinner, I suggest another place a bit more intimate...South Park Cafe?! The wine list is interesting although the mark-ups (esp. on the low end) are high. When the weather is nice, the tables outside are nice as well. ”

“ Very good food, i liked the wine list too. $20 entrees, $10 apetizers and $7 deserts. It's a small bistro-style french restaurant that can get pretty loud, but i loved the atmosphere. That open-faced mushroom ravioli apetizer was soooo good.

“ Heard all the hoopla about Chez Papa and it is true. Chez Papa is a true french Bistro with a well selected wine list. Tried several apps which were great, the standout being the foie gras, and the entrees were definitely solid.
If you like Chez Papa, check out their other sister restaurant in the Embarcadero, La Suite. ”

“ Very authentic bistro atmosphere. The steak frites
is delicious. The outside seating seems a little
awkward since it's on a hill. If you're making
