“ The first couple of times, I just practically gave up 'cause the line was too long. Finally made it in recently. Fresh fruits always draw me in. The omlette was great, pancakes were standard. Good experience but not sure it's worth an-hour wait. Maybe I'm just spoiled with breakfast in the east coast. Would like to come back on a week day to try their lunch menu. ”

“ I think you can see me there in that line in the picture! I too waited for about an hour to see what all the ruckus was. I couldn't help but order some fresh pastries and a carrot cake to go, before even ordering breakfast! The Florentine Benedict was so good. Just the right amount of lemon in the hollandaise sauce and very tasty breakfast potatoes. Next time I'll go earlier so I can be first in line! ”

MMmmmm... yummy. If you happen to be awake at the crack of dawn, (well worth the pit stop along the walk of shame) this is THE place. Is it worth the excruciating wait aside everybody and their mother should you hit the snooze?...usually not. If you do decide to brave the line bring plenty of fluids. ”

“
So, I have tried to eat at Mama's a few times on the weekend. The first time I went, it was around 9:30. I thought this was pretty early, I was wrong! This past week, I was dog sitting and my friends pup was up at the crack of dawn. I got back from walking the pooches and it was about 7:15. I did the hole "are you sleeping?" to my boyfriend and got the "I was!" So, long story short, I arrived at Mama's by 8:00.
To my surprise there was already a line. This time we grinned and bared it and all I can say is wow! I had the low fat french toast and it was amazing. I can't believe it was low fat. B-friend had one of the huge omelet's and it was also very good. ”

“ wow! was here on a tuesday morning about 1045 and had to stand in line about 15 minutes or so. there is no list to put your name on, you just stand in line till you get in. the food was fabulous! everything was so fresh. the place was loud, but not too loud to hear conversation. We ordered a huge bowl of fresh strawberries, pancakes with fresh banana, an omlette with a nice spicey italian sausage and bell peppers, grilled red potatoes, sourdough toast and hot tea. It all came in a short amount of time and the waitstaff was attentive but not overbearing. Some of the items were a bit expensive, like the strawberries for $7, but they had so much flavor that I was willing to overlook the price. We both really enjoyed it all and look forward to going back. ”

“
Great breakfast fare in huge portions with pretty touches like chocolate syrup decorations on your pancake. Very cute country kitchen decor. Waiting to go back on a weekday when their is no line. The food is great but not so amazing that you should wait in that crazy weekend line. I think the line out the door exists because of the heavy tourist foot traffic and the lack of another breakfast spot in the area. If the wait is long, walk over to Cafe Divine a block away -- some breakfast/brunch items offered (before 1pm) on the menu in a beautiful dining room with views of the park. ”

“ Yup, I had to wait for an hour to get seated. The food was excellent, but the portions were a little on the small side. I still think Dottie's is better. I found it interesting to pay for the food first before being seated. The workers there were very friendly. ”

“
Finally got a chance to try this “legendary breakfast nook” and I was not disappointed. Luckily a number of previous reviewers had mentioned the long wait, so I was prepared. Paper in hand I waited on line--for an hour, which is a bit much, but to be expected for a Sunday brunch in the city. I tried the Farmer's omelet: goat cheese, leeks, bacon and a mimosa. I also tried a bite of the eggs Florentine, which was great too. Good food for sure, the service was very friendly as well. Space is a little cramped but I'll be back. ”

“ Legendary breakfast nook overlooking Washington Square serving copiously generous breakfast goodies for the past 45 years, a genuine San Francisco institution, consistently creating a cornucopia of superb omelets, baked delights, buttermilk pancakes, banana nut french toast with homemade banana bread slathered with bananas, delicious apple pan dore, french sourdough baguette covered with sliced apples and drizzled with a lemon-butter sauce, endless pancakes smothered in every conceivable seasonal berry. After breakfast, ample salads and sandwiches including the archetypal fabulous Monte Cristo sandwich, turkey, ham and cheese dipped in egg and grilled and served with homemade jams. Mama's has been in the Michael & Debra Sanchez family for almost 50 years with epochal long lines weekends proving their popularity, longevity and breakfast hegemony. San Francisco's favorite North Beach breakfast spot. A delice. ”

“ This place kicks ass. The best brunch you will find, and worth the horrendous line around the block you'll encounter on weekend mornings. If you can deal with that, you will be compensated with some of the best breakfast food in town.

“ HOLY MOLEY is place is off the charts.... grab a paper and bunker down in long line to indulge what has to be the best breakie in the city... I would gladly sit for an hour in the rain to get tucked into their 'Monte Cristo' . Open for breakfast/lunch only in quaint cottage style setting overlooking Washington Square - this place is a crowd pleaser... Never had anything off the menu that wasn't fantastic..

“ Mama's is the best breakfast place in all of SF. (That I've tried anyway).
Don't let the line in front deter you, the food is worth the wait. They have everything from huge waffles with fruit pilled high, to crab benedict. It's simply decadent. I've never had anything there I didn't love, it's a must if you live in the city, or if you're just visiting. ”

“ Scrumptious breakfast, and surprisingly healthy. Mama's is very popular, so get there early to avoid the endless lines. Shockingly, I've seen lines wrap out the front door even during the middle of the week.

“ Come here before 9 on a weekend and the wait is not that long but even if it is long, it's well worth it. The Washington Square omelette was yummy and came loaded with italian sausage! Also the low fat apple yogurt cinnamon french toast was delicious too and didn't taste low fat at all. Also try their coffee cakes too, very moist! Great and friendly service too. ”

“ Whoa Mama! Some people complain about the sometime two hour wait on the weekends, but the trick is going during the week, when the only waiting you have to do is inside, watching the cooks create breakfast masterpieces before your very hungry eyes. Watching them simultaneously make delicious pancakes, crab benedicts, and fresh french toast from a variety of different homemade breads and topped with mounds of ripe blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries is enough to make you gnaw off your own arm. However, this is the most unique and breath-quickening part of the whole Mama’s experience, because for the fifteen or so minutes that you are standing there watching the magic happen, it is impossible to change your mind less than fifty times. It's cozy and worth the wait, especially if you bring your own coffee to drink in line, because theirs is gross. ”

“ Another great place to eat in the city. Food is delicious, fresh ingredients and lots of it. Only one thing to say on the negative is it is really small and you have to wait and order your food before you can get a table. ”

“ Looooong waits. The food is inventive and worth it though. The worst part is having to quickly make a decision once you get to the front of the ordering line. Only complaint is that you feel obligated to eat quickly and leave so someone else can have your table. ”

“ One of the best breakfast spots in the city. Consistently good food with nice breads and pasteries to boot. Can't go wrong with the omelettes and the french toast is pretty good too. What I like the most about Mamas is the whole experience leading up ordering (which is surprisingly orderly): Depending on the line, you might get a glimpse of the lucky ones on the inside and preview of what's to come. After a bit of a wait, you get close to the door, only to have to wait some more. When you finally get on the inside, you can watch them cook or savor pasteries while you wait to order. Watching the food always makes me question what I was going to order. Bring a paper to read while you wait or invite friends and stiff them with long wait while you're fashionably late ("looking for parking"). If you're really lucky, they'll be close to the front ;) ”

“ This has got to be one of the best brunch places in the City--the service is pleasant and efficient, the food quality is consistently tasty, and the decor conveys an uplifting, cheery ambiance, atypical of greasy diners. It's a fairly small establishment; the line is always out the door, but the excursion is well worth it. I haven't had anything that was mediocre. ”

“ This place is great. I love their Monte Cristo sandwich--it's simply divine. They also know how to make the perfect omelet--it doesn't matter what kind you order--and their blueberry coffee cake accompanies the house coffee perfectly. Moreover, the service is ultra-friendly. Mama's isn't a large restaurant and it fills up quickly. I recommend going during the week or very early on the weekends to avoid the crowds. However, if you find yourself in a line, buy a paper and read while you wait. ”
