“
We've been going to Caffe Sport for 25 years and while it's true there was some decline in service and food quality after Tony Sr. departed - we are happy to say it's BACK!!!! Just there last weekend (9-4-09) and Anthony Jr. has taken control. He was the ultimate host and the food was as FABULOUS as it's always been. We are VERY GLAD we returned. The pesto is still our all time favorite. We actually considered going two nights in a row (how sad is that when you are in SF?) ”

“ This is one of my favorite italian restaurants! Caffe Sport doesn't even sound italian, but I assure you, it is. I love the old school funky decor. There is art scattered all over the walls. The bread with the dipping sauce is amazing. I love the Caesar Salad here! More than enough dressing and very tangy and lots of garlic. The pasta with mussels is very good. I had another pasta and I can't remember the name, but it was every bit as good. I really recommend you try this place if you are coming to North Beach. ”

“
This place used to be "the" place to bring all your friends and family visiting SF but since the owner's son took over, the service and food quality have gone downhill. On our last visit, the "new boss" was a bully and turned all our orders into "doubles" just because we have 7 people. I understand some dishes need to be a "double" but not every single dish and especially not ALL the pasta dishes! A trained and expert orderer would know exactly what to "double" such as the eggplant or mussels but not all the heavy carb stuff! He didn't repeat the orders and never checked on us so we left him a small tip and guess what he did? He chased after us down busy North beach on a Saturday night and started yelling obscenities! How sophisticated! So BEWARE, make sure you know exactly how much this bully is taking advantage of your party the next time you dine at Caffe Sport. I hope the previous boss (dad) realize how junior is slowly killing the business. ”

“ Don't let the strange name fool you... this place can cook up some mean italian food! Decor is VERY unique, with wall to wall knickknacks up the wazoo! Makes for some interesting conversation! The vibe was very boisterous with everyone seeming to share their big plates of heaps of seafood and pasta with gusto. A good sign! It was cozy, yet not cramped. The wait staff was super friendly, and efficient. We got 3 dishes, a seafood pasta, an eggplant dish, and the seafood stew-type thing. We got tons of bread with some yummy dipping sauce. The pasta had amazing flavor. Creamy, yet not heavy. I wanted to lick the plate clean! The eggplant parmigiana was awesome! The seafood plate was super generous too! I wish we got the mussels, as we saw everyone else getting it. They really know how to cook seafood just right, not one piece was overcooked! We got a warm farewell pinch on the cheek from one of the older waiters, which was very cute! I'll definitely be back! ”

“ There is nothing subtle about Caffe Sport. The decor is a riot- this is the italian equivalent of that mexican place in West Portal (except that the food is good). If you're after something light, do not come here. The cooks are very liberal with their garlic. We had the four cheese shellfish pasta and the shrimp and scallops were cooked not a second too long. They forgot our clams, but when they came out- oh my, but they were delicious! This is a fun place to take people from out of town. ”

“ I always love going to this place. I love to bring people from out of town. Great Sicilian food and awesome quirky Sicilian decor. If I remember correctly (I haven't been in over a year) you have to pay in cash, and the line can be long.

“ the food can be good; pasta al dente, rich sauces are tastey as is the calamari. Usually lower quality food when its slow.
Food is much better when I've gone with a large group. Lots of kitsch, strewn all over. ”

“ If you're into rich and intense flavors, the penne pesto and Cioppino al' Antonio (seafood stew w/ white sauce - garlic, lemon juice and olive oil) are excellent. The pesto is reminiscent of the pesto I had while in Liguria. Prices on the menu appear a bit steep at first, then the dishes arrive at your table and you realize it's family style which means huge portions! The spicy cheese sauce that comes with the bread is made with gorgonzola, tomatoes, peppers... yummy!

“ So Barbara & I are strolling around North Beach on Saturday night without reservations and we're getting hungry. We poked our heads into 10 places along Columbus to beg a table. No place would seat us for at least 45 minutes. I reasoned that Cafe Sport is a block off the main drag, so maybe it's not as busy. We walked into a full house. Crowded room with live music is noisy & fun. The podium girl was not hopeful for seating, so I greeted the bartender in italian & pleaded that we're hungry and he can't turn a Paesano away. He came out from the bar and got us a mid-room table in 15 seconds. Servers appeared quickly and we were beveraged up fast. We ordered the pasta, salads, etc. This is not gourmet italian cuisine. This is tourist oriented, large volume, production line food. It served our need to consume lots'a carbos & red wine. We stayed 90 minutes, spent smallish cash. I'm giving a positive review because we got preferential treatment. ”

“ You either love it, or will never go back again. Sicilian dishes prepared with very rich sauces. The waiters can be pesky, but push back a little bit, and you will be fine. This is not your typical italian restaurant, but it doesn't try to be. Food is excellent, especially if you love garlic, and your stomach can handle the excess. ”

“ I went here with a group of friends. The eggplant parmisian is to die for. Its nice and mushy with an abundant serving of garlic. Also, the shrimp with white cream sauce and asparagus is divine. I always get those two plates everytime I go there. ”

“ Funky vibe, old school italian atmosphere. Waitstaff is impatient and wants customers to hurry up and order so fresh customers can come in. Food is ok, good if you come on the right night. Nothing outstanding, stick to the basics like linguine with clams. Probably not worth the price, what with so many other places just around the corner with italian food. ”

“ This is a place that has OK food in a nice environment. The portions are huge, so it is definiately a place to get a few dishes for the table and share. the waiters are quite high pressure and sometimes think that you don't have the brains to order what you would like, so they push their choices on you. ”
