“
Time after time, I bring out-of-towners to Blue Plate and they are amazed. The menu may be small but each dish is spot on. Its a cozy sexy place perfect for some drinks and great food. The pork chops are like butter and the appetizers are full of flavor. The wait may be long and some of the seating areas are smack dab in the middle of people traffic but if you take it in stride- it's not a big deal. The staff has always been helpful and friendly. Cheers! ”

“ Blue Plate has an appetizer menu that I just couldn't steer myself away from, so I chowed down on small plates rather than commit to a single large one. A warm lentil salad ($8) was served with wilted bitter greens, roasted red pepper bits, and rosemary hazelnuts, though my plate literally had two hazelnuts and a sprinkling of what appeared to be spanish almonds. (The menu changes daily, so if you see a similar lentil salad with a few alterations, don't think that my review is off on what was written and what I think I ate.) Dungeness crab hush puppies ($12)were marvelously delicate, light, and sweet, nested around a fluffy ball of frisee and served with piquillo pepper tartar sauce. I picked through a slightly dry side dish of quartered brussel sprouts with toasted pecans ($5), too, that would have benefited from more brown butter and sage. My friend had a tender, yet char-crusted pork chop with bratwurst and braised cabbage that was divine. The wine list is a work of art. ”

“ How often do you have a dinner where every single plate that was brought to the table could be considered "excellent"? We had this experience last night at Blue Plate. I had heard mixed reviews, so even though it's in my neighborhood, I was hesitant to try it. We had two friends visiting from Northern California, and their first reaction when they saw the menu was, "I want everything!" We ended up ordering a lot...root vegetable soup, cabbage, apple & cheese salad, scallops with pastrami, macaroni & drunken goat cheese, meatloaf with mashed potatoes and green beans, and two plates of osso buco. ...and it was all great! We arrived at 9:15 pm (during the holidays, without a reservation) and were seated within 10 minutes. It's a great bi-level space with homey decor. We didn't go out there because it was raining, but they even have an outdoor seating area! And finally, to top it off, they serve Olympia beer in a can for $1. Nice touch. It was a great experience. ”

“ have had four experiences here all ok. parking can be tough on this section of mission,so I have more often then not gone to plan B rather then search on this stretch of mission, but the fact that it can be plan A should say something.
Classic updates of american food. Loud rooms, beautiful courtyard, so so service but good hearty food. Not in love with the depth of the menu at times but worth a stop in.

“ Chef de Cuisine Jonah Oakden creates some of the City's most enticing food in this marvelous retro throw-back to bohemia with its dark, red walls, dark homey hardwood floors, warm, loving service and spectacular food. An epitome of astonishingly delicious comfort food with creatively inventive spins, truly enviable cutting-edge tastes from the 21st Century. One of our most stunning culinary gems, a triumph of radiantly delicious cuisine americana, an extraordinary must-visit landmark restaurant, a gift to San Francisco. Superb yellowtail crudo with nectarines, fried shallots & lime citronette, extraordinary padron peppers with laura chenel goat cheese & almonds, simply unique, delectable grilled chicken with prosciutto ravioli, the world's most stunning, incredibly delicious pork chop simply defying the archetype, moist, tender, succulent. Ravishing blackberry sorbet & creme fraiche ice cream, blackberry-nectarine pie like Gramma used to make. Superbly scintillating American Cuisine. ”

“ I had an excellent meal here. Typical American comfort food, with organic ingredients. The portions were big. Even though everything was good, what stuck out was the free bread. Usually, bread is blah, but what the restaurant offered was delicious. The mac and cheese, with goat cheese, was good. And our party stayed outside in the patio/backyard, and it was nice outside, other than a little windy. ”

“ Nice, homey spot deep in the Mission. The food is hearty with plenty of flavor, but it's on the heavy side. This is a great place to share a main course and order some sides or an appetizer to start. The mac & cheese is really creamy and rich, so if you're in the mood for something that sticks to your ribs, this is your dish! I was too full for dessert, but they looked tasty. I want to head back on a nice night, sit on the back patio and indulge some more. ”

“ I like the ambience, warm cosy. The food is good, not great. The slow cooked pork is still pink like a medium rare steak. The waitress reassured me it's safe to eat...Who was talking about safety? I expect the slow roasted pork to be well-done. I might be wrong. The pork belly is good for no-carbs diet and for the taste too ”

“ We've been frequenting this restaurant for years. I go about twice a year and have never been disappointed. I always take friends here if I find they've never been. The food is excellent. For a long time they only served their meat loaf once a week but popular demand made it daily staple. It may sound odd that meat loaf would be such a big deal at what is a gourmet restaurant but once you taste it you understand immediately. It's a surprise find in that area. There's usually a line, but it's possible to get reservations on the phone. They have a lovely patio outside with heaters when needed. The staff is great and the wine list is fun. If you find a wine you like, you can probably order some through the Arlequin Wine Merchant for a good price. You can keep an eye on your expenses here or go all out. The Blue Plate has a longstanding loyal clientele for a reason. ”

“ This place was really nice. Great atmosphere...it looked super cute out in the back and i hope i get to sit out there next time. I am a sucker for a fava bean and had the bruschetta with favas and pecorino....um, YUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know chub415 didn't like his mushroom soup but i had some of it and it was rich and tasty....i'm sure the few slurps i had will probably put a coupla' pounds on my bum- it seemed laden with cream as all good soups are. For my main dish i had the chicken with peaches and new potatoes. Very flavorful but i gotta just say this one thing- we sat in the middle of the restaurant, and it was dimly lit. I couldn't really see what i was eating. It's hard to cut chicken when you can't see it. There. That's my only complaint. The blue cream soda was both a lovely color, as well as very tasty. I'd definitely go here again. ”

“ I couldn't bring myself to order the grilled hearts of romaine. I had a nice morel mushroom soup that was very intense. For my main course I had the meatloaf. Very tasty. My two dining companions also enjoyed their dishes very much. I had a very yummy blue colored vanilla cream soda. The sweets looked good, but with mitchell's right around the corner, we bolted. Overall great place! ”

“ Great menu! Had a delicious grilled hearts of romaine salad with bacon, avocado, and cherry tomatoes with a delicious balsamic dressing. 2 of my dinner partners had the pork porterhouse that was so tender and delicious. I had the skatewing which I would skip the next time. Rapini were nice side dish. Was doing low carb and didn't taste the focaccia or the macaroni with cheese - both looked delicious! If you love meat - this is your new favorite place. ”

“ I took my then-soon-to-be-ex-wife here for her birthday, and she proceeded to tell me she was in love with a guy who happened to be two years older than her dad. I remember I really enjoyed the meal, and the suggested wine was a great fit. I don't remember what I had, but it had to be really good to be a stand out from that night. ”

“ What a gem to have in the Mission. The garden in the back is intimate and well heated for those chilly SF evenings. The ribeye is one of the best I've ever tasted and despite what some may say, the grilled lettuce salad is excellent. The waitstaff is friendly and knowledgeable. Two thumbs up for Blue Plate. Parking isn't so bad...park in the street behind the restaurant (one block west of Mission...parallel to Mission). ”

“ My favorite SF restaurant
I love this reataurant! I've dined here three times. All times I've been welcomed like a returning family member. The off thing about the restaurant is that it seems more like three restaurants. The front room, the red room (redrum?) and the back patio. The food though is perfect. Everything is exquisite. Lamb that's savory. Quail that is to die for. Simple, attractive yet succulent food is this place's specialty. If I could cook at home any restaurant's offerings I'd be cooking the dishes from Blue Plate. Parking is a problem so be prepared to walk for blocks. Worth it though! ”

“ One of my absolute favorites in the city. Homey, but expertly prepared and conceived cuisine. Well priced, and special. You can get great meatloaf or a great steak, but I always order the grilled salad (strange but so worth it), and curried roasted lamb chops. dessert and wine are fantastic here as well. A hidden gem. ”

“ Yummy organic, creative 'homey' options. Loved our food, just a bit pricey but definately worth a visit. Mashed potatos were so fluffy... If you are in the mood for home cooked American food with the best ingredients .. this is definately an option, however Home & CHOW are equally as tasty and not as severe on the pocket book. ”

“ Well, drdung kept me from going neutral because he/she is right: it's far better than that. But it is pricy and I can think of other places to go. But I hit it once in a while with a buddy who used to work there. Bottomline: worth a trip if you've never been. ”

“ It was nice, but my memory of it isn't strong. Which means it can't have been _too_ great. It seemed to have a lovely backyard patio though. Hmm. I seem to recall I was a bit sick the night I went, that could be the problem. I'll update my review if I go back. ”
