“
A fun restaurant experience that is a great place for groups because of the picnic bench type seating, true to the german Beer Gardens. If you don't go with a group you will be dining with whomever happens to be seated next to you. I have only had the cheese spatzel, which was awesome so it has been hard for me to try anything else. All of the meals are hearty so go with an appetite. ”

“ Do you want a 5L glass of Maredsous? You can have it. The friendly bartender even assured me it happens on occasion. I declined the challenge, confident that with a 0.5L glass my manhood would still be intact.
We started with the potato pancakes. They seemed to be composed of two parts. The outside was overcooked, while the inside was mushy and nearly raw. I prefer a more uniform crispness.
I liked the lentil soup, it was good and hearty. The lentils themselves were still firm and had a nice texture. My fiancée fared even better, getting the star of the evening: the corn soup. The base was light and sweet, like fresh (even raw) corn. It was smooth and crisp, almost like a cucumber soup. In it were grits-like corn pieces that were firm and give an pleasant contrast to the silken base.
We shared the venison. It was tender and not very gamey. The sauce was great and I loved the red cabbage. It was good we only ordered one entrée, there was enough we took some home. ”

“ I heart this place. Authentic german food. Great kraut and a fantastic selection of mustards for those of us with a taste for spicy foods! Ask your server and they will be glad to make reccomendations.
Interesting community-seating, so get ready to get drunk and full next to some complete strangers. Truly a unique SF dining experience! ”

Love it love it love it. Really cute and homey decor. You might get place at a long communal picnic table, or a more romantic 2-top in the back. Boatloads of great german beer selections is reason enough to go, but there is no skimping on the food. If you are a fan of german food, this place is tops. Huge hearty salad was nice, bread dumpling in mushroom sauce was amaaaaaaaazing, and you must must must have the grilled cured pork chop. I could eat this chop every week for the rest of my life. It is that good. Lots of loud soccer fans create the atmosphere, but it is worth it for the beer and food to endure ”

“
What use to be a horrible neighborhood has now been transformed to a mecca of cutesy, pretty decent restaurants. This is one of them, kinda loud and fun, and if you are a bruskyholic, you have found Valhalla! This german run and owned place is a little bit of Munich moved to the city. The rowdy crowd only adds to the fun of the place, with mandatory beer guzzling out of beersteins which hold several liters of the wicked brew. The food here is good, nothing special, except that it is too much food unless you can eat portions designed for a soccer team! Way too much, to the point that we saw most of the plates being left with half of the food still one them. Maybe because red cabbage is cheap, or way to responsive after 6 hours of digestion? The sausages where good, as were the veal dishes, but again, the portions where huge! Parking is a nightmare but worth it. All in all, it's great for the beer, the fun and the quantity of food if you can eat it all. ”

“ Not so well versed in german cuisine... but the food here was way hearty and way delicious. A bit pricey, but I felt that it was worth it in that I was satisfyingly full. The potato leek soup was great, as well as all the pork that was ordered between my friends and I. Unfortunately I don't remember the item names, but I definitely need to go back. Hearty and good, hearty and good. The waitstaff was very friendly both times I went, even though the place was mad busy. ”

“ It's a little pricey, but the food was great—and the beer was even better. I liked the casual picnic table style dinning. A bit crowded, but that's usually an indication that a restaurant is doing something right. The atmosphere is loud and boisterous like a beer hall should be. I had two different types of beers there and unfortunately don't remember the names but they were excellent. I'll be back.

“ Basically how many other german restaurants do you know of in SF? This place is great, at least for what I enjoy the most and thats the spaetzle and the wiener schnitzle. However their beer selection is certainly worthy of mention. Everything they sell comes with its own style glass/mug. So when you have a Paulianer you get what good germans in germany get served in a nice pilsner style glass, while a hearty belgium bock gets a grand mug. (and everything else is special in its own way!) Always packed rain or shine. ”

“ i loved this place. damn good hearty german food cooked well and filling. mmmmm! decently priced and fun. this is not the kind of place you want to go to if your looking for a nice cozy meal or anything romantic or quiet. its pretty crowded loud & friendly--you might even be sharing a table with others. the night we went, trying to get out of there involved me being literally squished to pieces by burly beer drinkers on my way out, but even that was kinda funny.

“ This is without a doubt the best restaurant in the neighborhood. They have great, great beer, and they have a small bar area if that's all you're looking for. The food has always been top notch, the portions large and hearty. I'm in love with the spatzle and the sauteed venison medallions in red wine sauce. Mmmmm....so good. ”

“ I could not love this restaurant more. I'm half Austrian (the stomach half) and can throw down with some meats and beers! This place has a great beer selection and the jaegerschnitzel RULES. I get it every time. The dressing on the green salad is made exactly the way my Oma made it! YUM! Go here. Often. ”

“ What a surprise!
This restaurant defines what it means to dine german in SF. The ambience is pure europe - from the bleached pine tables hand scrubbed nightly - to the starkness of the plain room with its coved ceiling and hundreds of candles adding a surreal effect. The staff is the best. They clearly love their job and will laugh and treat customers like family. This restaurant has a huge base of regulars who swear by it. Foodwise, expecting those expecting heavy german fare won't be disappointed but unlike most other german restaurants in SF, it's really *good* food. And the beer selection of course is par excellence. Crowded on the weekends it's best experienced midweek. Shared great tables make the experience that much more unique as diners and waitstaff intermingle with your conversation. ”

“ Having grown up in germany, I'm always disappointed at the mockery most "german" restaurants make of german food. Suppenkuche is NOT one of them. This is the most authentic german food I've had outside the german borders. It is true to form from the "cram as many people at one table as possible" style seating to the modest decorations, and the outstanding and authentic FOOD - oh the food! Jagerschnitzel mit Spatzele und Salat is my personal favorite. Walking through the curtain at Suppenkuche is literally walking into one of the harvest season restaurants in germany's Rheinland-Pfaltz wine region. It is absolutely perfect! ”

“ Oh Suppenküche, how I love thee. The first time I went there, I ate alone and the waitress totally flirted with me. I ordered a very standard meal: pork sausages with kraut and smashies (that's what I call mashed potatoes). Very good, especially with the Buten Alt (on tap). My other experiences there have been equally good. Wait staff seems to be pretty attentive and friendly. I know of no other place like this in the Bay Area, so that gets Suppenküche extra points in my book. Plus, it's right around the corner from my place. Highly recommended. ”

“ Upon my return from germany this summer, I headed straight for this place as I started going through sauerkraut & sausage withdrawals. The beer selection awesome & it's fun to hang out in the little cove behind the bar. It's easy to meet people here since you'll be most likely seated at a table with other guests. The food is great & very authentic. I highly recommend ”

“ I've yet to meet anyone who doesn't like this restaurant! I am used to german restaurants filled with gray-haired grannys and polka bands, but not here. This place draws a young crowd, yet my parents love it too. Great food, sparse decor, and a great back bar area complete with Jesus candles! ”
