“ Tried their crab louis, was disappointed with it. The crab had a certain smell that was not the usual crabby smell. I don't know, maybe it was contaminated with another ingredient which was not supposed to be in the dish. ”

“ Some things never change, thank goodness! You do not go here for a trendy, "gourmet" meal. What you get is good, nicely prepared seafood. They have some meat courses, but come on, this is a seafood restaurant! Just had lunch there and as always, came away satisfied. Nice shrimp c***tail (all shrimp - no shredded lettuce but too much sauce), saute of sole that melted in my mouth (4 big pieces) and that wonderful half round of crusty sourdough. Waiters still wear tuxes, booths, old club feeling. Please do not change a thing! June 12, 2006. Went for lunch today and had fried oysters which were the best I ever had. Light, not greasy and just plain delicious.

“ Sam's .....an institution. Great place for lunch and dinner. Old style SF restaurant, dark wood, linen table cloths, private booths (curtains) and great food. seafood is a specialty...steaks are good and the veal is cooked to perfection. They also make a great hamburger steak with mushroom gravy.
Reasonable prices and first class food. A must. ”

“ Old school. The main room is fairly drab, and looks like it needs a bit of a scrubbing. Get one of the nice train-car wooden booths. Stick with the fish: halibut, black bass. Watch out for the triple pour of grappa after dinner - I recommend a caffe corretto (espresso with a little shot of grappa) instead.
3.5 stars - I'd go back, but not the same sort of experience as, for example, Peter Luger in Brooklyn. ”

“ A Traditional restaurant is how I would describe Sam's Grill. A nice one too. Our dinner tonight was excellent. I had the Crab Louie which I love. Plenty of crab with a tasty sauce over a bed of shredded lettuce. Of course the Sour Dough bread is a must with the Crab Louie. My wife had a Crab Curry which is not listed on the menu, but can be had by simply asking. She enjoyed it although the rice it came with was a little subpar. We have been to Sam's Grill many times over the years and we have always enjoyed it. Really good food in an old fashioned setting. Most of the menu is seafood with lots of choices, but steaks and other items are offered. ”
