You probably shouldn't come here if you're expecting gourmet ribs, or a Hubert Keller type of restaurant. This is a rib joint. Period. Review #13975

Everett and Jones is an EB institution for BBQ. What's funny is I actually like the bare bones location on San Pablo in Berkeley better. Maybe it's because I don't have to wait FOREVER to get a waitress or our food...the Jack London locaiton always seems packed, and the food is decent, but never blow your mind BBQ. The nice thing about the Jack London locaiton is real tables to sit down at and more sides besides just the potato salad I would get in Berkeley. The BBQ can be hit or miss, sometimes great ribs, chicken, sausage and brisket...sometimes not so good. I usually do the 2 way combos to hedge my bets. Still probably one of the better BBQ spots in the EB. Review #13373

I've been going to E&J for a long time, even before they had their Jack London Square outlet. The Berkeley branch has never been particularly good compared to their competitors. But the Oakland branch was promising and years ago it was quite good, and the decor (random furniture, bell jars for drinks, etc.) was funky and fun. A few years ago they had some major problems with slow service and bad food (BBQ was undercooked and rubbery). It seemed they had turned things around, but my family and I just had our last meal there. The service has gotten terrible again, slow and unapologetic, and the ribs are back to undercooked and rubbery. It's a shame. because they used to be really good. I suppose their popularity has made them complacent. If you want good BBQ you can try Doug's in Oakland or KC's in Berkeley. But avoid E&J unless you really love the decor and don't mind mediocre food and slow, indifferent service. Review #12743

2 weeks ago Barbara & I ate here before going to a jazz show @ Yoshi's. I echo Chub415's review below. Place was packed, we got a table in 10 minutes. I wanted fall off the bone delicious ribs with sides. I got grisly, somewhat chewy ribs that I couldn't finish because they were undercooked and rubbery. Sauce tasted institutional to me. Potato salad and cole slaw sides were better than Max's Opera cafe, had more soul. Baked beans were good. You get free seconds of sides by asking. Beer served in Mason jars, 1970's cute idea that should have died permanently back then. Barb had chicken, which was better cooked than the ribs. The good looking young couple seated next to us picked at the food for 15 minutes then split after paying. They looked hungry, probably went someplace else to eat. I recommend that you do the same. I was really happy when this large attractive version of Everett and Jones opened near Jack London Square. It is nice to have a nice dining atmosphere available to the BBQ crowd. This chain is an institution in the East Bay. I want the food to be a lot better. They seem to rush things and with BBQ that is bad. The last time I ordered ribs they were underdone and tough. Pork ribs should fall off the bone. The sauces are little too sweet for my taste. The neutral rating may be a tad tough, but I like my BBQ and I wish E and J would pay more attention to the details and show a little more love. Review #12432
