Santo Coyote was La Cenaduria de Ana Rosa -- they had to change the name, but it's the same cook (Ana Rosa) and people. Many specialties are specific to the Mexican Jalisco region (Autlan) where Ana Rosa Leon, the chef, is from. I've been four times now over the last year and it is consistently great -- especially considering the prices. I love love love the appetizer of ceviche tostadas and the main dish of Chicken Pipian (a mole sauce of pumkin seeds and spices) and also the Carnitas. Great service, great food, and plenty of it. All of the people I have taken there have loved it. The neighborhood is a bit scary, but the food isn't! Go!
And afterwards, if you go for lunch, there's a nice gift shop next door with textiles, art, clothes, and books from Mexico.

Welcome to the neighborhood, Bellanico! Owners Chris Shepherd (chef) and Elizabeth Frumusa (wine maven), who own Aperto on San Francisco's Potrero Hill, named their new restaurant after their daughters. It has a granite-topped wine bar, open kitchen, and a warm feel.
I went with two friends (both chefs) and their daughter. We tried 4 of the 5 Cicchetti (tasty bites), 3 of the 6 Antipasti (appetizers), 1 Primi (pasta), 3 Secondi (main dishes), 1 dessert,1 cheese plate with all 3 cheeses, 2 flights of wine, 1 sparkling wine, and 2 dessert wines. The flavors were distinct, fresh, and wonderful. For those of you, like me, who never order chicken when dining out, the Roasted Fulton Valley Chicken with preserved lemons and crushed potatoes with kalamata olives was to die for.
Great price:value ratio. Cicchetti were $3-5. Antipasti $5-9. Primi $5-14. Secondi were $14-18. Contorni (side dishes) were $4-5. Wine was reasonable.

Two friends and I went 6/9/06. Fun/good waiter who was knowledgable about the wine (not a huge list, but well-priced). The Chateau Lamarque Haut-Medoc 1998 was very good. We started with the special sashimi of the night -- a Hawaiian poke served with wonton chips -- perfectly seasoned. Then the fried artichoke/goat cheese salad -- also well-balanced flavor-wise & yummy. Entrees were Pork Roast Loin w/braised chard & roasted pear caramel jus, Leg of Lamb w/romesco sauce & manchego, and Grilled Sirloin Steak w/red onion jam & pancetta sherry shallot sauce. The pork was most excellent, the lamb was very good (and huge), and the steak was just OK. The mashed potatoes and veggies were tasty, but I didn't realize we could have had sweet potato fries. We finished up w/molten cake w/two scoops of gelato. I forgot to check out the patio, but I LOVED the disco bathroom and funky art along the wall on the way to the bathroom. Very fun. Overall, it was very good but there's better for the price.

Very friendly and unpretentious and a great place to hear the person you are talking to. Bartender really knew his stuff. So-so snack choices; better cheeses would be welcome! Not the best selection compared to some other wine bars, but it's quite good enough for that after work glass of wine and chat with a friend.

[Where have all my Ferry Building reviews gone?! I swear I already did this one ages ago.] This place is way overrated despite it's being owned by the famed Jardinniere chef, being organic, and paying it's people comparitively well. I wanted to like it so much more than is possible. Menu is so sparse (the drinks menu is bigger than the food menu). The carnitas can be pretty good, but not consistent. Guacamole is good, but too oniony. Best bargain combo is child's quesadilla and carnitas taco and have water to drink. Good spot for people watching. Eat anywhere else in the Ferry Building for better food and value.

Update: soon to be at Stevenson and Second - yay! And open in the evenings.
I dunno about that first review for SM... I know tons of people who love this place. And there are many good places to eat around here! What's he talking about? Yes, this one is a bit expensive, but it's ORGANIC! OK, so I love the pizzas, rotisserie chicken (this is a very good value for the money, too), special sandwiches (like the current Dungeness Crab melt), and the cookies are to die for! They do tend to overdress salads, but just tell them you want dressing on the side. I trade off eating more expensive lunch like this with bringing my own organic salads or going to Lee's deli or cheap Chinese... then the average $ for lunch over the week is good!

We (3) were looking for a place to eat in the Chestnut St. area last night and came across this cool looking little place. It just opened 2 weeks ago. It's a mod-decorated place in white and reds mostly - marble floor, cool curving tables, fun square dishes, red tiles on walls, red flowers. Not only the space is nice, but the food & service are great! We ordered:- Tom Kah Gai soup (perfect, feeds 4)
- salmon sashimi & mango salad (amazing flavors, feeds 1-2)
- pumpkin curry w/chicken (YUM! I was practically licking the plate, feeds 2-4)
- spicy eggplant (tasty, feeds 2-4)
We couldn't eat all the food, but stuffed ourselves trying to because it was so tasty. Needless to say, we were too full to try dessert. Everything on the menu is from $5 to $12, many dishes around $8. They need better beer and wine choices, but it's cheaper to eat if you don't order alcohol anyway! Overall, it's a great value for your money, eyes, and taste buds.

My friend who just went to Peru said this one seemed more authentic than the others in the city that she has been to, with bigger quantities. I LOVED the soup--it was a cilantro-chicken broth with either chicken or mixed seafood (I had with chicken and my friend had it with seafood). I think it's my new favorite for soup. I was full after the soup, but I had already ordered the Mochica Ceviche sampler and it was HUGE and limey and yummy! Good quantities and quality. Tasty all around. Friends had the grilled ahi and the Mochica Paella and loved them. I think I liked this place better than Destino, but maybe not better than Fresca Fillmore. Wine only--not a full bar. Location is not near other stuff, but that means you can park easily.

I've been wanting to try it for a while and I finally got to go here 1/8/06. We (3) got there around 4:00 p.m. and immediately got seated inside at a rickety table. The staff was really helpful and let us sample the three red wines so we could choose a bottle. You do have to get your own silverware and stuff, but they came to the table to take our order and to deliver it. It was as good as I had read about and as good as it looked when I peeked in through the window. They used tasty cheeses and toppings (my friend had whole anchovies on hers). I love thin, thin pizza. YUM! It's a bit pricey, to be sure, but what good food in SF isn't?

I agree with lylvita, but I guess if you like thick, doughy, pizza with gobs of tasteless cheese, then you'll like it. It used to be the one of the best when it was only in North Beach before it became a chain. Or maybe that was because I was younger and liked gobs of tasteless cheese more then... ;-) Try Pizzetta 211 for a really tasty pizza treat!

I have had both brunch and dinner there and at brunch it was pretty busy and service sucked, and at dinner it was practically empty and service sucked. It's too pricey to have bad service. Food quality-taste-value was not up to the price either. Stick to a drink and a snack and it's OK. Nice decor, nice back patio. Very French feeling. But service in France is good!

I don't know why they chose the name Soup Freaks which doesn't say anything about being organic which is the important factor in my mind. Also, I think the soups aren't the best thing there. I do love the chili and my friend swears by the matzo ball soup, but what I go there for is the AWESOME roasted sirloin sandwich with Painted Hills Natural Beef (100% Natural+ Humane). I usually order a a half sandwich for $4.95 total which usually has a big portion of perfectly flavored and cooked pink meat and comes on a buttered baguette au jus and comes with just enough side salad. I sometimes order the half sandwich with soup ($7.95) or get a side order of beets or something. YUM! They also have organic/free range chicken and turkey sandwiches. Bonus: they use biodegradable containers which is great news for our disposable culture.

My office mates and I eat at Ming's way too often. We LOVE the crispy orange chicken on the steam table. It's an addiction, I think. I usually get it with the green beans and tofu and some steamed rice and the total is $4.37. You can't beat that--better than most junk food. Lately the green beans are lacking though. Probably better to order off the menu rather than get steam table, but I'm so addicted to the orange chicken. I've also had the house won ton soup which was really good. Order it without the noodles for more of the wonton and other goodies. Warning: you would never eat here unless someone lets you in on the secret. It's kinda scary looking. You can eat in, but may have to share a table. We take it back to the office kitchen. When we're not eating cheap, we're eating expensive and great food at Neeto's, SoupFreaks (organic), and Seller's Market (organic), among others in the general area.

When I was a conference manager I used them for years to cater lunch meetings in our One Market office. Always great service and tasty food. Then they put in Massimo Lounge across the street on Market St. and I got to enjoy it in person - great capuccinos in the morning in the nice & funkily-decorated space inside, lunches on the sidewalk while people watching, or DJ music and wine after work on Fridays. Happy hour M-F 3-7pm. Live opera Thursdays, DJ Fridays and some music at other times, too. Apparently the lounge is no longer owned by the same people who started Il Massimo.

This is fast becoming my favorite place for lunch, bar organic. I work in a building across the alley from it. Oh, and it's not "right next to Yank Sing" - it's a building apart on the side closer to 2nd St. There are daily soup specials and hot lunch specials which are mostly the same from week to week for the day of the week. Thursday is a great day - baked potato soup for the soup special - get it with all the toppings even though it's really fattening (sour cream, bacon, green onion, grated cheddar cheese). Also on Thursday are the hot daily specials of steak fajitas (yum and fed me for both lunch and dinner), fried chicken with garlic mashers and gravy (yum!). Also, you get to choose between great homemade corn bread and really good french bread to go with your meal or soup.

I finally got to eat here! (I work in the area and have just not done it until last week - 4/15/05). We wanted a quick bite to eat for dinner and we were previously wine tasting at VinoVenue, about a block and a half away, so this was a good choice. I had the angel hair pasta with goat cheese and sundried tomatoes and stuff ($9) and it was really, really, really yummy! My boyfriend had the steak which was done french style in a peppercorn sauce ($15) and served with mashed potatoes and veggies. It was very tasty, too. Our waitress was very busy with a large party of tipsy folk and yet managed to give us very good, friendly service. And we loved the motorcycles hanging all over the place, of course.

I was forced into eating at this location of CCF in March 2005. The only times I have been in a CCF before was in L.A. with my brother because there are only chain restaurants out where he lives. If you must eat at a chain restaurant while you're in Union Square, and you don't mind waiting an hour at any time of day, then this is an OK choice, I suppose. It's San Francisco though - so why eat at a chain restaurant?! I do suppose it will please anyone in a large party of eaters as the menu is way too long. And it will please those out-of-towner fat American types who like big portions. And it will please those sorts of people that love Starbucks and Hard Rock Cafes. The food is actually pretty good, even though a bit too much sugar and salt are used, and you'll have enough for your next meal, too. But go somewhere else - have some imagination!

I ate there 2/27/05, a Sunday night, with 2 friends. I'm giving it a positive review because there was nothing really wrong with the place (tho service could have been better for the money). Everything was good and fresh, just no value for the money other than if you like trendy crowds in the Marina. Atmosphere OK, but where was the rock 'n' roll?! They played reggae the whole time we were there.
We had 2 orders of edamame, spicy hamachi tartare with shrimp chips, chinese wok tossed green beans (not very Japanese, but tasty none the less), hot appetizer of scallops cooked with mushrooms and onion in a creamy-yummy sauce, two orders each of hamachi and tuna sashimi with bowls of rice, two orders of unagi sushi (cooked eel), two orders of kabocha squash tempura (4 pieces), and a fancy roll of some sort. Not to mention some nigori sake (unfiltered and served cold - the best to my taste). The bill was about $150 with tip! Yikes! Eat a burger before you go and save some dough.

Yes, the tables were packed, but my friend and I were lucky enough to choose to go Sunday dinner at opening time (5:30) and the tables right around us never got seated by the time we left two hours later. The sangria was great, the food was perfectly cooked, seasonings balanced, decor appealing, and the service was especially good and caring. We shared the salad with perfectly seared scallops and tuna in a really tasty lime-cumin dressing. The salad was definitely big enough to share. My friend had the pork which was really yummy and tender - marinated in orange amongst other flavorings. It was served with handmade tortillas, beans, guacamole and something else. I had the hangar steak with potatoes which also was served with slices of tomatoes, guacamole and grilled spring onions. It was all so delicious! To top it off we shared the tres leches cake and that was great, too. I look forward to eating at Platanos again and soon, I hope!

JAN 2006: I got take-out deep dish (the "Little Star") and a salad: Still so yummy!
JAN 2005 Review : After driving around for 10 minutes trying to find a parking space, I was thinking this place better be really good - and it was! I hadn't had deep dish in a few years since last braving the crowds at Zachary's in Berkeley and after eating theirs it really made me regret that time lag. The crust was crispy and the tomato sauce was yummy -- perfectly spiced (we had the "Little Star"). We also had the green salad which was perfect. Good, friendly service. The jukebox was fun, too. I've had atke-out from there since then and the quality was just as good, though better to eat deep dish on the spot.

If you're shopping around Union Square and want a tasty, quick sit-down meal, this is it. I went for dinner with three friends, including two Asians, and we all thought our meals were yummy and priced right - also ample quantity. 1996 to 2003 -- I had been to three of the Roy's restaurants in Hawaii (Big Island, Maui and Kauai) and was excited to see that they came to SF as I had had a great meal each time with equally great service. I arranged our office's 2003 holiday lunch at Roy's SF and it was fabulous. The service from beginning to end was great and the food was awesome as usual. Everyone (~30 people) loved it.
2005 - I went to Roy's in January with two friends for the $31.99 for three course meal deal and had a great meal again. I had the mixed appetizers, nut encrusted mahi-mahi with lobster sauce, and caramel-nut torte with ice cream for dessert. My two friends had the same except they both had the molten chocolate cake for dessert (which was also great). The restaurant was packed and there were several large dinner parties (of boisterous convention goers), so service was a bit pressed, but they really did try their best to be attentive to our table.

Good ambience (was the original location for Slanted Door) and food, great service, nice wine list. We had the Tartara de Atun (chopped raw tuna) to start - it was fresh, tasty and prettily presented. I had the lamb with lentil tacu-tacu – lamb was great and so was its jus, lentil cake was too salty for me. My friend had the Peruvian Bouillabaisse – very good, but not outstanding. The dessert was a special – a tres leches sort of cake and was excellent. I think some of the popularity is trendiness - if you're in that neighborhood and want similar food, but with better value for your money, I would suggest going to Platanos (Guerrero at 18th).

This place has a great atmosphere with fun paintings: it's a bar/lounge/restaurant with a DJ (who was playing music to eat dinner by in a hip, unobnoxious style) and some live music, too. The service was really great, the drinks were great and actually had alcohol in them, and the "small plates" food was very well executed. The carmelized brussels sprouts made me actually want more brussels sprouts! The scallops with kabocha squash puree and chard were perfectly cooked and quite yummy.

I've only ever had brunch here, but I hear that dinner is very good, too. I think it's a great brunch spot - right on the Embarcadero, not too hard to park on the weekends, and not always a huge wait without reservations. Warning: watch out for that free basket of baked goodies that comes soon after you sit down - you'll be too full to eat your eggs benedict if you eat too many of them (but definitely take them home to eat later).

Fun atmosphere, sorta hippie-middle eastern. It's great value for your money and good choice for vegetarians. You get to sit on the floor (I think there are some tables with chairs, too). Go with a few friends so you can order a few of the dishes and share them. I really like the madfoonah (sp?) - which is a garlicky fava bean dish, as well as the hummus, felafel and baba ghanouj. There are some good belly dancers - be sure to tuck a dollar or two into their outfits when they shimmy by your table. And you might try a hooka even if you don't smoke.

Ok, so it's really good for the price and compared to other fast food places, but you are supporting a fundamentalist, anti-abortion funding family by eating there! Boulevard is my all time SF favorite. It's consistently amazingly near perfect! Great food, locale, view, ambience, and service. The wood burning and cooking smells coming out of the restaurant in the morning can really make you drool - I think they smoke their own meats or something (I work in the building kitty-corner to it). Everything is amazing. Don't miss dessert either.

Went again in August 2005 - had some good sweet potato soup and tasty arugula/spinach/pear salad (but they really need to learn to slice the pear! it had huge chunks of pear). Boyfriend had burger which was really big, juicy, and good ($10.50 with fries). Pints $4.50, or $3.00 if you can get there at happy hour which ends early at 5:30.
2004 - I concur with Xiuh - great burgers & beer, but a bit pricey...

Nice, welcoming, cozy neighborhood trattoria which attracts many regulars - even me and I don't even live in Potrero Hill... or SF, for that matter! Everything is really good. To start you might want to try the big chock-full-o'-fresh-crab crab cakes with not-too-spicy aioli. To follow that you might choose a perfectly cooked steak or one of the fresh pasta dishes. And all the desserts are made in house, so have half your dinner boxed up so you'll have some room for some! You really can't go wrong no matter what you order. If you have to wait for a table, you can have a glass of wine while you wait.
