Neutral Fries weren't as crispy as true dutch/belgium/french fries are. Had a crepe as well...kinda made me nauseous after eating it. I liked the decor, though, and they had some nice loungy beats thumping in the background. Probably won't go back but give it a shot if you're in the Hayes Valley Hood. Review #11266 Frjtz Fries

Neutral A lot of hipe surrounding this place so I had to try it. Service was pretty bad. Drink times were in the high teens. They got our app order wrong ; we were basically that one table who gets the shaft. What I found to be really interesting was the crowd: designer people and jeans everywhere but then you had the Cholula hot sauce on the table and plastic menus. You had some great, modern architectural features but then the servers were wearing t-shirts. A bunch of things just didn't add up. I think once the buzz settles down this might be a nice place but until then I'll be going to Tommy's Review #11099 Tres Agaves

Positive I used my fool-proof system for deciding whether to eat at a restaurant I've never heard of before when I stumbled on Pagolac. It's Tuesday night and raining. Your favorite place is closed. You start walking and looking, you know you're taking a gamble but you need to eat. You see a restaurant that's packed with people. You look a little closer and see a nice mix of both gringos and those people that order from the secret menu, the special things that you can't pronounce. Pagolac was one of those spots. Beef 7 ways is a bargain at $15 a person. I've spent 50x more on a seven course meal so I was happy to spend the next 2 hours eating this one. Review #10795 Pagolac

Positive Great little spot. Definitely make reservations when you go, the 14 tables can fill up rather quickly. We went on a Monday night and to our surprise Monday night was half price bottle night--Cha-ching! We started with a half bottle of Laurent Perrier for the bargain price of $15 and worked our way into a Spanish Priorat for $30--two excellent choices if I do say. The crab fluffs were out of this world. They didn't skimp on the crab meat by filling it with "other ingredients". These dense balls of meat had the texture of a huge fork-full of shredded BBQ pork from your favorite BBQ spot. The rib meat fell off the bone but, like a few others have said, the sauce tasted like someone from California trying to make good sauce. The beat salad was great, too. This has been a pretty popular dish around town this Fall/Winter season and I never grow tired of it. Sit next to one of the windows so you can have dinner theater as bums and drug dealers duke it out on the street. Review #10791 Maverick

Positive I won't belabor the point of this restaurant having the best pho in the city. It does. Get the chicken soup to-go and keep it in your fridge for a few days until it's rainy and cold. I saw they had a bottle of Newton Unfiltered Chardonnay for their white wines and inquired as to the price. The owner told me it was $12 a bottle and I almost jumped out of my skin knowing that this bottle fetches $50 at the wine store. So I told him I would take it all, whatever he had back there of that "cheap white table wine". I guess it pays to read the wine rags each month. Review #10441 Turtle Tower

Neutral Can't say I was too impressed with this place. I guess they're known for their crab cakes but what I got wasn't much of a crab as it was a cake. They were pretty weak on the crab meat for the salad, too. We mistakenly got fish and chips to share not really thinking that any time a server says lightly battered and fried what she really means is: "Hey , what the f**k do you expect? The fish is dredged in thick, cement-like batter and we fry the hell out of it". Our fault, should've known. After eating at Gary Danko and Range that same weekend we were the wrong people to eat at Cafe Maritime. Oh yeah, you also get the 20-30% Lombard street markup compliments of our cities thriving tourism. Review #10412 Cafe Maritime

Positive Yeah, like everyone else has said, this place is a great spot to mow on a dog. Although Tuesday is the best day to go b/c of the burger option. The owner makes a burger that will rival any in the city. It takes about 30 minutes to get it made but it's well worth the wait. Have a sausage appetizer while you wait! Positive I walk out of this place with a hard-on every time. My little secret, though, is that I've never actually had a full dinner here. I'm scared that if I delve any further I'll be disappointed. When I go I always sit up front at the small table s. We get the ceviche platter 4-ways and pair it with a bottle of the Gruner Veltliner. I really don't need anything more to be happy; The ceviche and wine are the perfect match in every way. Maybe one day I'll do it all but until then Limon will be my ace in the hole. Positive Raul's Bagel is the only thing you need to know when you walk into this place. Thick cut smoked bacon, egg, cheese inside a bagel. You'll be picking the bacon out of your teeth for a week. But every time you go diggin' and pick out a piece, you'll be lovin' life. They have a Zumex 2000 orange juicer. Last time I saw one of these was in Sevilla. This puppy slices and juices you a glass of O.J. in about 15 seconds. This thing must of cost an ass-load to buy b/c what they charge for a glass of juice is outrageous. Damn good, though. Neutral Nice place to have a beer. The few times I've been here they seem to always be out of a few of the already few tap beers. Like the good contributers of SF Survey have already said, the burgers and fries are pretty damn good. Stay away from the appetizer with this description, "Jumbo grilled shrimp wrapped in bacon". Hand to God, this appetizer came out and was literally a bowl filled with tiny bay shrimp that had been wrapped in bacon and deep fried. They were each about the size of a penny with a f***ing toothpick stuck in each of them. I almost s**t myself when I saw this. I started looking around for the hidden camera or the laughing server who was telling his friends about the f**k stick in the corner who just ordered the "jumbo shrimp" app. Never saw either. Not worth the $10 price tag, not even worth a pair of crap-stained boxers. Review #10345 Frankies Bohemian Cafe

Positive I go here for lunch occasionally and am always impressed with the quality but let down by the portion size. I realize the small plates concept but I end up getting 4 small plates to try and fill the grumbling, empty organ inside my body with enough food to justify the $30 check. Neutral Way too many noodle bars out there that are more authentic than this place. If you do go, though, I suggest the Dan Dan noodles. Positive It pains me to say it but this place does have the best steak in town. The bottom line is the quality of meat, you could deep-fry this f**ker and the thing would still melt in your mouth. Go with he bone-in filet rare, a side of mushrooms (tell them to make it the old way, trust me) and maybe some asparagus. Skip the salads (over priced and lame) you may want to try one of the skillets, I prefer the mussels but the shrimp and crab are also very good. Bring your own juice, though, no bargains on the wine list. The bartendress makes some pretty amazing drinks with great attention to detail. Try one of the "savory-sweet" cocktails like the basil or cucumber martini. Review #10342 Boboquivari's

Positive So I walked in to the SSS, ordered a bbq sandwich, paid the lady, unwrapped this beauty and started to eat it. I walked around the block and my last bite was at the front door of the Saigon Sandwich Shop, again. Got a roasted pork sandwich this time around and savored every perfect bite. Warm, crusty baguette stuffed with hot, juicy meats and a pile of cool vegies with some spicy jalepeneos. Almost as good as Ms. Kim's when I was stationed in Saigon in '75. Neutral Clams in black bean sauce, clay-pot pork, steamed black bass in a black bean sauce and Ginger beef were a few of the dishes we had. Either they were cooking with MSG or someone slipped with the salt, either way my monthly sodium in take was achieved in one meal...shit, I'm still chugging water. This place is known for their seafood but when I took a closer look at the tanks that held the goods nothing was moving. Not the best sign for a fresh seafood restaurant. Review #10130 Thanh Tam II

Positive I've been wanting to eat here for quite some time. Hole-in-the-wall is an understatement. I wish I new more about Vietnamese food than just Pho, imperial and spring rolls. I orderd some random dishes and before I could take a sip of my beer the table was full of steaming hot food. The winner of the night was the beef and cabbage salad, freaking awesome. The one comforting thought I had was that this place did so much volume that even though it looked like it should be condemned the food had to be fresh. s**t, the front of the menu has Julia Child's mug on it! Positive What a nice surprise this was. I guess you can describe it as comfort food but that wouldn't do it justice--it's nicer than that. The decor of the restaurant suggested a pricy menu. Neutral Chicken satay was some of the best I've tasted. Got this "fresh" mixed seafood dish and totally forgot about the typical Asian-style seafood you get in restaurants like this. Imitation crab meat, tiny shrimp and, this was a first, imitation scallops. Hand to God! They had the consistency of a** with a touch of rubber. It was one of those dishes that you muscled through b/c you are famished but are praying the whole time that your stomach can handle it. Next time I'll stick to a curry dish or something. Neutral This guy could do SO much to make this a destination spot in SF. I mean there aren't many soul food restaurants in the city and what he's doing is nothing special. First things first, get rid of the canned sides. Fresh mashed potatoes, please. Collards are amazing, though and the fried chicken is really tasty--almost beats Jack Falstaff. Positive U-lala. I just love walking into this place. You're basically in the kitchen when you sit down. The rhythmic clank of the wok, the droning exhaust fans and the ring from the passing trolley bell all contribute in making this the quintessential no-frills Chinese restaurant. Without of doubt get the pot stickers, that's a given. A steaming plate of beef with asparagus in a black bean sauce is something from a dream. The chefs special chow mein is another winner as well. Positive What a great place to eat a Sunday night dinner. Great comfort food with a little something extra. Every time I se this place reviewed in various publications I never hear anyone talk about the wine list. Andrew has compiled a serious list of some outstanding producers, vintages and varietals. I'd say it puts 80 percent of the restaurants in SF to shame when it comes down to the list. Don't even get me started on the prices. I'd say he's got most of them marked at just over retail. I should of taken a hint when I saw all the pigeons that hang around the place and crap all over the outdoor seating area and the sidewalk in front of it. Positive Great spot for lunch. Good wines by the glass and a solid lowbrow French menu. Mussels in a white wine broth were great. All of the sandwiches I've had there have been stellar. Even though they only have a few seats outside, on a sunny day sitting inside is just as good. The natural light, pine wood interiors gives it a real coastal feel. Price is right, too Review #8165 Galette

Positive Fresca is a place where they've been doing it for so long that they have everything down to s science. A staple restaurant that will always please but never really wow. The portions are great, there's no skimping on the ceviche. I recommend getting the sampler and trying the seafood as many different ways as possible. Review #8164 Fresca

Positive I almost walked out when I saw the same bartender from the Elite Cafe working here (see Elite Cafe review). I pressed on, though. Had a glass of wine at the bar and some awesome stuffed morels. Went back a few weeks later and ate a real meal and was very impressed with both quality and service. Wish they were open for lunch. Positive Gimmicky name but good pizza. The toasted subs are pretty underrated. Check out the lunch specials when you go, always seem to be the best deal. Review #8160 Extreme Pizza

Neutral Went in for some drinks and apps. Oysters were alright. Asked the bartender for Kettle up and told him I liked it with an icecap on top. He shook the tin 3 times and poured it in my glass, not what I come to expect from a restaurant called Elite. Haven't been back since. Review #8159 Elite Cafe

Negative Average....I guess. If you have to be in The Wharf just go to In-N-Out with guest from out of town. Give them something the majority of the country can't have. Review #8158 Rainforest Cafe

Positive Good pie. The ambiance doesn't feel like your typical pizza joint, though. Staff could be a little happier. Review #8153 Little Star Pizza
