Negative Terrible tasting bagels and bagel sandwiches that resemble airport food. Why go here when Katz's bagels is just 20 minutes, if you walk, or 7 minutes if you drive? Those are real bagels. These are fake: spongy, (like your teeth ripping through plastic). Ick. Service is perfunctory at best, though the line moves quickly. Review #21451 The Posh Bagel

Positive This tiny eatery (with another location in Pacific Heights) which has huge windows and long tables (to share), and some smaller tables in the corners, features delicious homemade breads and pastries, and the most amazing homemade granola (all available to go). And, it's all organic. Yay. Breakfast is divine. Grab someone's leftover paper, ask for a large coffee (it'll come in the traditional French-type bowl), order a scramble (like the smoked salmon with fresh wholegrain bread and fruit), or a sandwich, and you can nibble while you read, and enjoy people watching. Bring your dog and sit outside at one of the many outdoor tables. It's a friendly establishment with the good naturedness typical of Cole Valley. A real gem. Review #18041 Boulange de Cole

Positive I'm in between a green dot and a gray one here. Great food, high prices, small portions, and loud loud loud atmosphere sum up my experience at Mecca. Mecca, in my opinion, is the kind of place you go for tasty but expensive drinks after work, (try the Mojitos!), mingling at queer Ladies Night (Thanks, Betty), great fries, or a sit-down, loud and really expensive dinner. The atmosphere is cool, and the service is fast, but the portions are less than optimal, and the prices are high; I'm not a big eater, but I always leave hungry. I've had entrees (chicken and ribs are great), and appetizers (fries are salty, crispy and tasty), and delicious asparagus, but if you are an introvert and don't like noise or crowds, or if you're an artist with a cafe job, or, if you're truly hungry and not just eye-spying at someone's delicious-looking plate, Mecca is not for you. Negative Why oh why do people wait so long in line for this place? We waited an hour for mediocre food at Ella's, and it's fairly high priced with a limited selection. Think: flavorless, soggy hashed browns, heavy egg dishes with no flavor, and bland coffee cake. The fruit salad was fresh, but so fresh that they didn't bother washing it; there was still a sticker on a slice of pear! Once you get a table, the service is fast. Other pros include good coffee, great homemade savory breads, and cinnamon rolls. My suggestion? If you absolutely MUST eat breakfast in this neighborhood and can't wait until you get to a much better restaurant (it's not hard), get the coffee and sticky buns to go. Positive Unlike the name implies, Modern tea offers more than just delicious whole leaf organic and free trade teas, it is a spacious and light-filled room with wooden floors, blue and green stained glass, extremely friendly service, (like eating at a friend's house), and local, organic American entrees and desserts. Attention to detail is where this restaurant blooms. Even the bathroom was stocked with organic soap! And, the food was beautifully presented. We tried their chicken sausage meatloaf with tomato sauce (though I wished for more tomato sauce on it), on top of cheesey polenta, as recommended by our server, and he was right: it's delicious. We also ordered their Halibut taco served with barbeque-flavored beans, and sour cream, also very good. We didn't have time for dessert, but the options looked impressive. (We'll be back!)The service was so friendly; they were efficient and sweet and waved at us as we left. Now that's service! Review #13513 Modern Tea

Negative What's all the fuss? We went for lunch to this French bistro in Potrero Hill, and though the service was efficient, and the atmosphere cozy, we were quite disappointed by the taste, portions, and cost of the food. We had two appetizers and the soup du jour. We started with the artichoke sliced in quarters, stuffed with goat cheese and wrapped with prosciutto ($9). We were shocked to see it was a baby artichoke, was mildly-flavored and barely able to fill the medium-sized plate. Then we had the open mushroom ravioli ($10). The mushrooms were rich in their own sauce but covered by a paltry wonton-like cover, not wrapped like a ravioli. Now, remember, this is lunch, and we're already at $19. Last, we had 2 bowls of spinach soup ($5 each). All I can say about that is to think of half bowls of watered-down frozen cream of spinach, with pretty specks of paprika, and moments of delicious, grated asiago, which gave the soup a bit of flavor. We left hungry and will not return. Review #12091 Chez Papa Bistro

Positive Can you say welcoming? Can you say surprisingly delicious? Can you say, inexpensive? Rotee will say YES, YES, YES! My favorites included the naan (though I ask for melted butter), the Chicken Tikka Masala (moist tandoori chicken in the most delicious creamy tomato sauce that you will want to pour and pour over rice), and the Galub Jamun (which normally I find cloyingly sweet but was persuaded to try, and oh my God were these Indian donuts in rose syrup moist and delicious!). Though parking can be a hassle, service is super friendly. This is one Indian/Pakistani restaurant you don't want to miss! Review #11789 Rotee

Positive Delessio is the absolute best place for a quick lunch, take-out dinner, or for dessert! They have a hot and cold salad bar with the best Thai grilled chicken I've ever eaten (and I eat a lot of Thai food, let me tell you!). I also recommend their cheesy mac and cheese, and their meatloaf with tomato sauce on top. Everything is so fresh! Made within a couple of hours. You can also get wrapped or made-to-order sandwiches. But, the best part besides all that? The desserts. Oh my God, if I only had room to tell you all about the mini cupcakes that are each an artistic creation, or the fancy shards of chocolate on their 3-tiered cakes (much cheaper than Citizen Cake, and with less waitstaff attitude!). You can also buy big pieces of chocolate in multiple flavors (try: white chocolate w/ginger, for eg, or dark chocolate mint). Delessio's is the best bakery in town. Service, as mentioned, is without pretense, and seating is always available inside or out. Review #11690 DeLessio Market & Bakery

Positive While you don't come here for the food -- it's hearty Italian, and only so-so -- it is a lot of fun with a large group! We came here for a birthday party with 10 people, had to wait only about 10 minutes (how often does that happen without a reservation, I ask you?). Fun antique pictures of 50's bombshells and people's pets adorn the walls, which makes the atmosphere an A+ in my book. And, the best food dish? The Tiramisu steeped in so much rum, (I kid you not), will get you drunk! Yum. Review #11688 Buca di Beppo

Positive Il Cantuccio, which means little corner in Italian, is just the kind of Italian restaurant I love: bustling with energetic and friendly waitstaff, and delicious foods. I esp loved the freshness and originality of the food. My favorite was the Cannelloni: spinach and ricotta wrapped lovingly in layers of crepes -- really divine in a tomato-cream sauce! The wine list was extensive, and our waitress was helpful in pointing out good choices. They also have a list of specials each night. Prices were moderate, (but worth it), and parking was difficult. Positive Fresh sushi, great sushi bar with chance to see your order made, and very friendly service are the hallmarks of Hamano. While I used to find the sushi a little more tasty, (I've been a customer for 5 years), as another reviewer stated, they keep adding delicious new rolls, and the food is good. I esp. recommend the spicy scallop roll, the fried shrimp heads, and the spider roll (which is always crunchy). Their nigiri is quite fresh, and they esp. have excellent Toro. I'd recommend this place to anyone who loves the experience of eating good sushi in a nice restaurant. Review #11433 Hamano Sushi

Positive It's Indian, and it's pizza -- two truly excellent combos, when you're in the mood for hearty-styled pizza, which is not for those with weak stomachs, to be sure! Positive From the outside of this tiny storefront cafe combined with a wine store next door, you would never guess that a beautiful flowered patio garden lies in back waiting to be enjoyed. For breakfast, try the homemade polenta and maple syrup; it's creamy and delicious! For lunch, opt for a grilled sandwich; there are many to choose from and offer a holiday from a traditional lunch. My favorites are the white cheddar, pear, and ham; it's crispy, chewy, and melty; the grilled eggplant with goat cheese -- Mmm!-- and the portobello mushroom w/grueyere cheese and crispy sage. It's a holiday in your mouth! Coffee is good, but smoothies are better (which I never thought I'd say, by the way), and the prices are moderate. Positive Despite a plethora of Thai restaurants in the Castro, I often end up ordering take-out, or spending a romantic evening atop the second floor of this lovely Thai restaurant (w/a fountain and characteristic fish tank), which looks out on the busy-ness of Castro Street. My favorite items include their Pad Ma Keur: Sauteed eggplant w/basil and savory wedges of tofu, and their Pad Kee Mao: sweet and spicy flat noodles either with seafood or tofu. Both are savory, and yes, just a bit greasy -- delicious! They're always friendly, and both the portions and prices are good. Review #11125 Thailand Restaurant

Neutral While my friends love this place, I thought it was just okay given the noise and the price of the food. I love to eat, and I love good food, but it's gotta be worth it. Though I found the vegetarian spring rolls way too spicy, the spinach w/garlic was yummy. The highly acclaimed sea bass was crunchy but the sauce was served on the side of a very uninspired salad. It was okay. The best part was the desserts. The moist Meyer lemon pudding cake served with homemade huckleberry sorbet was just divine! As was the chocolate peanut butter layer cake which outdid the bland vanilla ice cream it was served with. The service and the portions were good, but given the number of fantastic restaurants in the city, the food was not worth the price by far! Review #11124 Slanted Door, The

Positive With huge portions, old school service and style (servers who call me "princess", and a bar so 60's it's hip), Marcello's is the kind of restaurant you enter and forget it's 2006! And, the food is out of this world! Huge portions, thick sauces, and fresh ingredients are at the heart of the cooking. Last time we went, we had egg-dipped mushrooms as an app, which the server informed us that the owner had just picked from the forest! I can believe it; boy, were they good! Any kind of pasta, chicken parm, etc is good, though there's not much for vegetarians. I go to Marcello's when I want to feel taken care of, and need a rest from the rest of the world. Positive Looking for a sumptuous brunch on a beautiful day? Try the Metro Cafe with their flowery backyard and delicious, French food. I esp. love their Mimosas, benedicts served w/sprightly salads and light, fluffy pomme daphines (which are a French type of popover made with cream-puff pastry dough and potato puree). For dinner, opt for their $15 early bird three course meal -- it's truly a treat! Before you go, know that the service is slooowww but friendly, and the parking is a hassle. Review #10928 Metro Cafe

Positive Park Chow fills the need for a neighborhood pub with warm ambiance, attentive service, and a delicious, large variety of food items (for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike). On one rainy day, we sat, warmed by the fire, cozy at our little table, eating a fire-grilled artichoke, which was served w/lemon aioli. I had the most succulent porcini mushroom lasagne: a layering, (much like a folded crepe) of melting cheese and rich, full-bodied mushrooms, while my girlfriend enjoyed one of their daily specials: A cheese enveloped meatball sandwich in a rich tomato sauce. Portions are large, prices are moderate, and noise level is loud, but you can still hear your companion. Park Chow, like its sister, Chow (on Church) is the perfect warm vibe on a cold day. Positive My girlfriend took me to Bix for our anniversary, and for the most part, it was a sublime experience. The food was fantastic and the jazz singer's voice made the huge restaurant feel small and cozy, the atmosphere, (mostly Art Deco, which I love), w/ high ceilings, transported us to a 1930's supper club. However, our server sucked. She was snotty and couldn't be bothered when we asked her repeatedly to refill our water glasses. But, other than that, it was a wonderful experience, and I would try it again (with a different server). I'd highly recommend the appetizer plate of the day ($9.75/person). On that, we loved the potato pillows w/creme fraiche and caviar (light, fluffy, and delicious), the firecracker shrimp, and the mushroom crotini.I'd also recommend the Tomales Bay oysters, and for an entree, the seared tuna -- cooked to perfection! The prices are of course expensive, but for a special occasion, it's worth it! Review #10579 BIX

Positive When this restaurant had a fire four years ago, I was aghast; it was one of my favorite Thai restaurants in the city. Now, it's back, better than ever! Great ambiance (a fountain the center), fun drinks: esp. the Mango Sake (like a Mango lassi but with a kick), and an extensive menu. All the curries are delicious, but esp. the Thai coconut curry w/veggies and tofu. For dessert, try one of their sorbets, which is light and refreshing, and if you're around during lunch, they have specials for under $6. Positive This little hideaway sushi restaurant (my favorite in the city), is a real delight: small tables, friendly service, and beautifully crafted, bite-sized sushi are the highlights of this tiny restaurant, which yes, can be a bit of a wait, esp. on weekends. But, it's worth it! I esp. recommend the Barbie rolls (w/salmon and lemon slices), and the GI Joe roll (avocado, eel w/special sauce), and any of the sushi nigiri, which is always extremely fresh. Positive We were treated like royalty, and ate it up! After winning the prix fixe for two at Sumi, (3 courses before 7pm, one of the best values in town), -- thanks SF Survey! -- we were warmly received by the host, and seated at a romantic table, and given two delicious glasses of Spanish white wine which went perfectly with the proffered appetizers of salmon nigiri (the freshest fish, but too much rice), and a pyramid of ahi tuna and avocado bathed in citrus dressing (absolutely divine!). We loved the Filet Mignon (free range, organic), -- tender and juicy! -- though we thought the seafood stew was too heavy. Dessert was great: the pineapple upside down cake was light and fluffy. Bills are served in thick, classical books, though we didn't get one since everything was comped. Positive There are amazing sandwiches at amazing fares at this small restaurant tucked between a Martha Bros and a landromat on California at Divis. I've been coming here for three years now, and have my standard favorites: the BLT and the Turkey Club. Both are served on huge squares of the most moist, chewy, homemade Foccacia bread -- really tender and chewy -- and with a small side salad and olives for $6. They're huge sandwiches, and easily good for lunch and dinner! They also have excellent eggplant parmiagiana, and bakery items, like decadent brownies and tortes. Negative Yuck! Yuck! Yuck! Why go here when there are so many better places? I used to love Blue, but something has changed for the worse: it was always slow, but now it's super slow, and the food is terrible! They've combined the brunch menu with the lunch/dinner menu, which was an interesting change. I went with a friend, and ordered the Eggs Florentine. I asked specifically for the English Muffin to be crisp, since in previous times, it's been undercooked. Though the restaurant had only two other tables of two, our meal took 20 minutes to arrive, and when it did, the English Muffin wasn't cooked at all, the potatoes were hard -- the cook had dumped parmesan cheese on top for "flavor" -- and the fruit was not ripe. My friend ordered eggs, which were not cooked well, and again, experienced underripe fruit and uncooked potatoes. With so many fantastic restaurants in the city, why go for mediocre? Positive With two locations -- one on Valencia at 16th, and the other on 16th, you don't have to miss great Vietnamese food at Sunflower. Try the vietnamese crepe (I always get vegetarian), crisp and delicious, and rolled w/tofu, grated carrots, sweet and sour sauce, and cucumbers in a big leaf of lettuce. Or, the signature dish of Sunflower prawns over garlic noodles: a perfect melange of sweet and spicy! I took my parents here, (they live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a country without even good Chinese food), and they loved the flavors and textures of everything. Positive I gotta tell you: I love, LOVE the food here, and the Eastern-influenced tea house atmosphere (with Buddhas and gold teapots) is peaceful and delightful. BUT, THE SERVICE SUCKS. This could be an amazing experience, if the waitstaff wouldn't stand around and talk to one another. We waited 20 minutes for our pots of tea, which were served beautifully, and then another 40 minutes (I kid you not!), for our food: cold sandwiches and a fruit plate. If you have a lot of time to spare, and don't take it personally that it takes so long, go for the curried egg salad, which is amazingly delicious, and served with home-dried raisins and coleslaw on the side. Or, the honeycomb, pear, and cambozola cheese plate, served with rye crisps (i.e. crackers), which is incredible! I dream about that dish! The teas are lovingly described, and delicious. Positive Can you say, Funky? Fun? Hip without attitude? Lime is all these things, and right out of the Jetson's or perhaps the 60's w/pink lights, white formica table tops and chairs, funky waitresses, and no skimp on the food. If you've got a group coming after work, make reservations on Open Table. But, if you've gotta wait, you still look cool sitting on the multi-colored, plush blocks in the front of the restaurant, sipping your Mojito! Be sure to check out the bar at the front and the single bathroom which hosts a tv inside. Cool! Everything on the tapas-style menu (except the pizza), is delicious and won't kill your wallet. But, I have two favorites: I was a vegetarian for years, and there is NO guilt when I eat their mini hamburgers --oozing 1000 island dressing on homemade buns. The grilled cheese sandwiches are melty, cheesy, deliciousness, and perfect with the tiny cup of tomato soup! Service is so-so, food is excellent! A+ Review #7152 Lime

Positive Huge portions, decidedly southern fare, a busy, country-home appeal, and a really long wait are the cornerstones of Kate's Kitchen. If you've got a big stomach, I'd highly recommend the Hushpuppies with honey butter to go with any of your entrees. I also love the fruit orgy: fruit, yogurt, granola, and any of their scrambles of the day -- posted on the big chalkboard by the kitchen door. Oh, and their cornmeal pancakes are divine! Coffee is good. Service is friendly, and a bit slow on weekends, but only because there so many darned tables! Review #7146 Kate's Kitchen

Positive This French cafe (two of my favorite words: French and Cafe), is in the heart of Noe Valley. It's hard to know where to go when it's beautiful outside, and folks, this is it! The flowery patio is spacious and free from noise and commotion; the service is attentive, and authentically French (our waitress the last time was truly from Paris), and the food is solidly good. For brunch, try the chocolate crepe, which is soft, creamy (exactly as a crepe should be!), and just oozes rich chocolate. If you're craving something savory, the eggs Florentine are served in a buttery Hollandaise with crispy, garlicky potatoes on the side: delicious! Review #7145 Le Zinc

Positive My girlfriend always yells out, "de Frjtz, de Frjtz!" whenever we come here because it is a bit of a fantasy fulfilled to get their fries. You get a choice of 1-2 dips; I always get (and recommend), the delicious wasabi mayo with my fries, which, by the way, are served piping hot in a paper cone. Frjtz has both sweet and savory crepes, which are a little crispy for my taste, but flavorful. They have beer and a million Italian sodas, which are fun. For seating, try to grab one of the little enclaves inside the cafe, or a table in the garden out back, which is really lovely, (when it's not too cold), if you want to hear who you're with. Cheers! Positive Their cookies are so-so; you gotta catch them while they're hot, otherwise, they aren't all that. Service is pretty friendly. However, the reason I'm writing this is because of their Sexy Bryan Bars, which are amazing!!! I went through a period of needing to eat one every day. Chocolate chips, coconut, graham cracker crust: this bar will quell your sweet tooth craving for a little bit of everything! Review #7141 Hot Cookie
