Positive Maritime East ("ME") is a WONDERFUL new addition to Berkeley's dining scene. Taking the place of the rather old and tired Zak's, ME (there's a "Maritime" located in SF, hence the name) serves up wonderfully prepared and beautifully presented fruits of the sea (and does an impressive job with terrestrial fare as well). My friends and I had a feast, we tried numerous appetizers/starters, each ordered and shared a different entree, and tried all three of ME's dessert options. The pizza with unagi and spagetting squash was innovative and interesting, the various fish courses I tried were perfectly prepared - succulent and moist, the salmon lox appetizer was unlike any "lox" I've ever had before - it was a thick cut, mildly cured, moist and subtly flavored piece of salmon. I ventured out for my entree and tried beef cheek for the first time - incredibly tender and flavorful. Finally, the desserts were excellent as well - a fabulous cappuccino oriented chilled divinity, a pear pancake Review #20563 Maritime East

Positive Digs Bistro is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Digs opened in October 2007 and replaced Olivia which had operated there for a couple of years. The ambiance is great - it's small (only 10 tables), and diners are seated in two different rooms. There's a fire stoked in the fireplace, and a small bar at which diners can sit. The menu is comprised of Mediterranean-Californian cuisine and everything we had was great. My wife started with a goat cheese souffle on a bed of chicory, beets, and pecans which was delicious. I started with a duck confite crepe which was also great (but a little pricey at $9). For our entrees we had tambo tuna and roasted chicken - both of which were done very well. Our waitress was attentive and very friendly. They have a small, but decent wine list with some good affordable options. We'll definitely be coming back. Review #20477 Digs Bistro

Positive I had dinner at Chenery Park with a group of 6 and we were all impressed by the food and our experience generally. Entrees averaged around $20 and they had a wide variety of entrees to choose from. I had a great New York strip with fries. The steak could have been cooked a little less (I had ordered medium rare and it wasn't that) but it was a great cut and the fries were prepared and seasoned perfectly. Their pumpkin bundt cake served with pumpkin gellato was amazing as was another dessert we had with espresso, ice cream and cookies. The staff was attentive and professional and they had a decent and reasonably priced wine list. They also had two great beers on tap in addition to the handful of standard bottled beers one would expect to find at most restaurants. The one downside was that it took them 10 minutes to seat us after the time our reservation was made for and there's really no place to wait except outside (and it was cold). I'd definitely go back. Positive Great steak in a nice setting but expensive and unfortunately, it's only open for dinner. The new Flemmings Steakhouse opening up at the corner of N. California Blvd. and Mount Diablo Blvd. is going to give Ruth's Chris a run for their money. Review #20117 Ruth's Chris Steakhouse

Positive Sea Salt is an excellent restaurant located on the up and coming block of San Pablo Ave at Dwight in Berkeley. It's owned by the same folks that own TRex, Lalimes, Jimmy Beans, and others. Sea Salt specializes in seafood (go figure) and serves up excellent and fresh food very nicely presented in a fun and chic setting. Sea Salt also has a full bar (and a good beer selection). Our waiter was very friendly and attentive. Sea Salt is a bit spendy but I would go back despite the price given the quality of the food and the nice setting. Great addition to the hood! Positive Delicious! I went to Venus last night for the first time (had been wanting to go for years) and was thoroughly impressed. Venus features sustainably raised/grown produce and meats which I love. I had a hanger steak with mashed potatoes and vegetables that was perfectly prepared. At $20, I thought it was an awesome deal. My two dining companions really enjoyed their meals as well and our waitress recommended a nice bottle of Grenache that they were featuring as a $25 special. The waitstaff was very friendly (though not quite as attentative as would have been nice). The space - one long room flanked with old red brick walls is nice though the basically bare brick walls and open kitchen make it a little loud. I'll definitely come back given the quality and value of the food not to mention Venus's great and convenient location in downtown Berkeley on Shattuck. Review #19886 Venus

Positive TRex is one of my favorite restaurants in Berkeley. All of their meat is hormone and antibiotic-free which is a huge draw for me. The space is super chic - an open, high ceiling warehouse/loft type space with an open kitchen, a bar/lounge area downstairs, a lounge area upstairs, and dining tables placed throughout. The six or so times I've been here the service has always been great. They have a fabulous selection of beers, a decent wine list and a full bar. Their bloody mary's are great too. They make a terrific $10 burger (served with fries) but the best deal on the menu is their meat two-ways from the smoker - $17 will get you a HUGE portion of two of the following: 1) a long-cut beef short rib (confusing I know); 2) beef brisket; 3) baby backs; 4) spare ribs. They also have a number of flat screen TV's with sports programing so if you're looking to just hang out and get a drink, it's conducive to that too. Suggestion: don't charge for the terrific thick-cut chips. Review #19385 T Rex Barbecue

Positive In the heart of downtown San Mateo, Lure is a wonderful gem of a restaurant. The space itself is wonderfully thought out and chic and the food is excellent. I came to Lure with a party of 7 and between us we tried most of the appetizers and many of the enteres and everything was delicious. Chef May Yong is extremely skilled at her craft and her sister Yvette handles the front house and service with style and grace. Everyone in my party was very impressed with the food and the service and I'm already looking forward to my next visit to Lure. Review #19383 Lure

Positive The quality of the fish was amazing and they offer up lots of incredibly unique rolls, sushi and small plates. They also serve up standard non-sushi Japanese fare - tempera, steak, etc. Huge sake selection and surprisingly, this place is pretty reasonably priced (esp. the sushi/sashimi combination entrees). They bring hot moist cloth towels to the table once you're seated AND they take reservations (highly recommended). This place was packed on the Sunday evening we went and as a result, the service was less than impressive- while this place is small, the two waitresses working just weren't up for the challenge. That being said, I'll definitely be revisiting this little Outer Richmond sushi gem. Review #18391 Kabuto Sushi

Positive This gem of a restaurant located on popular Solano Ave. serves up deliciously prepared and elegantly presented meals which are a great value. Rivoli prides itself on using fresh, locally grown, organic vegetables, free range meats, and wild caught seafood. I found the quality of the food to be on par with, or better than Chez Panisse and much less expensive (and easier to get a reservation!) My only critiques are: It's unfortunate that one has to walk through the server's prep area to get to the main dining room but that certainly doesn't take too much away from the dining experience. I'd like to see an expanded wine by the glass selection (and offerings under the $10-12.50/glass options they had when we were there). Everyone working there from the owner(s) down to the bussers were professional, diligent, and friendly. We'll definitely be going back. Review #18297 Rivoli

Positive Friendly staff serves up the Irish classics (corned beef and cabbage) as well as the standard American fare (burgers). In addition to the food (which is quite good) Beckett's has a decent selection of beers (although a greater selection would be nice). The ambiance in Beckett's is great - fireplace, brick walls, wonderful painted vaulted ceiling, and plenty of room. Plus, there's great hand painted portrait's of some of the Emerald Isle's most notables both historic and contemporary. Review #17997 Beckett's Irish Pub

Positive I had the four course lunch at REDD (1/6/07) and was VERY impressed. $50 is definitely some coin to drop on a lunch and fortunately I wasn't paying but there's no doubt that if you enjoy good food, phenomenal service, and a nice, artistic aesthetically pleasing setting, you won't be disappointed with REDD. For the 4 course menu, REDD required that every person at your table opt-in which I found a little annoying but it makes sense in terms of having everyone's plates/servings choreographed properly. They also (and I found this rather cool) alternate what each person at the table gets as their course. In other words, two people sitting next to each other will not get the same meal which encourages sharing. In addition to the 4 course meal there's a 7 course available, as well as wine pairings, or alternatively, one can order al a'carte. I'd recommend REDD to anyone who loves good food and service and is willing to pay for it. Review #17994 Redd

Positive Cafe Majestic is a nice, up scale restaurant located in a beautiful space in the Hotel Majestic, allegedly the longest continually run hotel in San Francisco. After a 4 year hiatus, the restaurant has reopened its doors. Although it has a couple small kinks to work out, Cafe Majestic serves up delicious food which is elegantly presented in a classy, impressive space. On the night we visited, they were understaffed but our waitress remained incredibly friendly and warm despite being spread too thin. The quail appetizer I had was the best part of my meal. It was exquisitely prepared, seasoned, and presented. The kobe beef and accompaniments while good, were a little disappointing. The chocolate cake dessert was good but not great and the pistachio chocolate truffels it was served with were disappointing. Their wine list was good and they offered some great wines by the glass that were moderately priced. I will definitely return to Cafe Majestic in the future. Review #17479 Cafe Majestic

Neutral I visited Perry's Union St. location with two guests after winning an SF Survey meal there. Unfortunately, I wasn't impressed. Perhaps it was an off night for the kitchen & the wait staff but my previous experience at their downtown location was MUCH better. The waiter never brought the table water and was not particularly attentive to our needs. Our plates sat for at least 10 minutes after we'd finished our meals. My halibut was on the small side for $20 and was over cooked and dry. The vegetables and mashpotatoes were quite good and my caesar decent. I realize that its a bar too but something did not seem right about charging $20 a plate and having a football game on with rowdy bar goers and too-loud to comfortably talk bad music playing. In addition, one of my eating companions ordered a Coke and got two refills only to discover when the bill arrived that they charge $1 per refill- I think its terrible for a restaurant to charge for refills esp. when unannounced! Positive I tried Soi 4 for the first time recently with my wife and a couple friends of ours and everyone really enjoyed their meals. They were able to accommodate us without a reservation at 7pm on a Wednesday night despite having every table filled. The food was delicious- I particularly liked the duck salad appetizer. The lamb chops and sliced beef were also done very well. The food was elegantly presented, and well seasoned and spiced with great flavor. The wait staff was mediocre - either not attentive enough or over ambitious (clearly plates before we were done eating). The atmosphere is nice and quite hip and it is conveniently located on Rockridge's College Ave within walking distance to BART. I would definitely return. Review #16500 Soi Four

Positive This relatively recent addition to Rockridge's College Avenue is conveniently located next to BART (and BART's parking lot). It's a cool modern space with friendly waiters. They squeezed me and my partner in at 7:30pm on a Friday night. The food was delicious but was way to expensive for the portions. By way of example, I got a spicy tuna tartar which was served up in a martini glass atop cubed cucumber. It was $12 and came with very little fish. They also seemed to be a bit understaffed for a busy Friday night. All that being said, with a cool bar, good food (albeit not a good value) and expensive real estate, they can get away with the prices and Pearl is deserving of a low "positive." Now that I've gone I wouldn't go back to eat but I also wouldn't discourage others from checking it out. Review #15018 Pearl Oyster Bar & Restaurant

Everyone in my group was pleased/impressed with the food, from the appetizers through dessert. I had the Niman Ranch beef two ways. It was delicious but the portion was a bit small for the price. Positive Finally made it here for dinner after hearing it was a great little Cole Valley bistro. I wasn't disappointed. Zazie is a cute little place in the heart of Cole Valley. Parking is less than ideal like anywhere else in Cole Valley but the N-Judah stops just 1/2 block away. The maitre de was great and while our waitress was attentive, she certainly wasn't the most effusive and made us feel a bit rushed even though there was no one waiting for our table. The food was quite good (I had the lamb chops). It is true the portions are a bit on the small side but then again, Zazie is quite affordable for what you're getting. The most expensive entree on the menu is $16 and they have a limited option 3 course prix fixe for $20! Plus, on Tuesday nights they waive the corkage fee (awesome!) or if you'd rather not BYOB, as an alternative, on Tuesday's they offer a house red for $3/glass or $12/bottle. Inside, the space has clean, modern design though it doesn't strike one as cold given that Range is always full of people and energy at meal times. The wait staff and bartenders are friendly and attentive and the food was excellent. We sampled one of everything on the appetizer menu and all were delicious. My only comment for improvement would be that the scallop appetizer was exceedingly small (one scallop sliced into 5 pieces garnished with some greens.) For dinner I had the steak which was prepared perfectly. We tried several desserts and all were excellent as well. For the cheese plate however, I would have liked to have seen more range and more pungent cheeses than were offered. All-in-all, Range is a great new restaurant and I love the fact that they serve free-range meat. Review #10905 Range

Positive I went to Iluna Basque a couple weeks ago with a $50 gift certificate courtesy of the SF Survey daily give away. After reading some of the other reviews about how little you got for your money, we were prepared to walk out paying $50 on top of the $50 credit we had. However, in the end, we ended up eating a wonderful meal that filled us both AND we had credit left over. The food was rich and full of flavor and the vibe and atmosphere cool. It is true, at $8+ per glass, the wine is a bit on the pricey side. The parking is the only other downside but if you want to go out in North Beach, that's the price you pay. I would recommend Iluna Basque to friends and family alike. Review #10626 Iluna Basque

Positive Located in the Outer Sunset, Yum Yum Fish began as simply a great place to get super fresh fish. Now, they've added a sushi menu. They only have seating for about 10. It still functions more like a fish store than a sushi restaurant providing sushi primarily on a take-out basis and only until 7:30pm. Good prices and great quality fish. Positive I went for lunch with a friend. Like the interior/decor; friendly waitstaff and generally good service though there were definitely long spells of inattentiveness. Started to bring out entrees out while my friend was still eating resulting in them returning with them to the kitchen and I'm presuming serving them to someone else because it was another 20 minutes until they reappeared with them. The skirt steak with fries and au jus was perfect! At $8-$10/glass for local california wines and $7 for local beers like Anchor Steam felt a little gouged. Positive Located just two blocks from the UCSF Mt. Parnassus campus, You See Sushi is a great lunch option if the UCSF food court and cafeteria don't appeal to you. They have a number of $6 lunch specials which come with a roll, 4 pieces of nigiri, rice, and miso. Decent quality fish, fast service. Neutral I should preface this review by saying I only had a couple slices for lunch and didn't try their appetizers, salads, sandwiches, calzones, pasta, or made-to-order pizza. This place has been around since the 70s and boasts that they use only fresh ingredients, make their own sausage & meatballs, use only Wisconsin cheese, and make their own dough. All that being said, the slices of pizza I had were mediocre. I have hope that its better than their lunch slices would suggest. Review #7817 Village Pizzeria

Negative Not only is it a chain and there's absolutely no reason to go to a chain restaurant when you live in arguably the culinary capitol (per capita at least) of this country (I went with a group of So. Positive A relatively new addition to the increasingly hip and gentrified Mission. Located next door to Foreign Cinema, Medjool is a hip new restaurant/bar. It's located in a huge and well decorated space and provides lounge, bar and dinner seating. Medjool offers small plates priced from $5-$13. The food was definitely good but not spectacular and I felt that many items were pretty pricey for what you got. In addition to the full menu and seating options downstairs, Medjool also boasts an awesome and very popular rooftop scene. Take the elevator to the "Penthouse" where you'll find a large rooftop tent with two bars, seating and heat lamps. The roof provides a great view of the City and a "Scewers" only menu is offered. Positive Triptych is a cool new restaurant in the Soma. The space itself is very hip- it has a slightly industrial feel and is adorned with modern art. As many of the other reviews mention, the bathroom is very cool and is a work of art in itself. As for the food, all four of us were pleased with our meals while we thought some minor improvements would go a long way in making a good meal a great one. My fish was a bit on the over done side and the blueberry balsamic glaze was over-reduced but I appreciated its unique flavor. The halibut appetizer was great. While the two wait staff were very friendly and were quite attentive in terms of refilling our water, we did have to wait a while for our wine to be opened and requests regarding two of the meals were overlooked. All in all, Triptych gets a positive review and after it works out a couple of its kinks/growing pains, has the potential to be a great off-the-beaten track gem. Review #7019 Triptych

Positive Although my limited food sampling didn't disappoint, I wouldn't come here for the food. Come here for the drinks/atmosphere and to see and be seen and to get some appetizers. I loved the gourmet finger food concept. The butter lettuce ceasar salad that you eat with your hands was tasty and the grilled cheese served with crusts cut off and an espresso cup filled with tomato soup for dipping was scrumptious, at $5 bucks you didn't get much. I'd recommend their $8 mojito which is served in a 16 ounce pint glass, has tons of well muddled mint and isn't too sweet. Positive I have to echo much of what PhoodiePham said. Greens certainly is a legend in the upscale vegetarian restaurant world and the food is good but I wasn't hugely impressed. Located right on the water, the setting is cool and there's always plenty of parking. I'd go there for the experience but it's not a restaurant I'd care to revisit on my dime with any frequency. Positive Great new modern pizzeria. The garlic bread was great: toasted bread served with a side of rich whipped butter and a whole roasted garlic bulb; wonderfully decadent and savory deep dish pizza; and a fantastically rich cheese cake dessert. With dim lighting (maybe a bit too dim), modern art, and a juke box with none of the old classics, Little Star is a great new twist on an old theme. Friendly wait staff and a carafe of water left on every table are added bonuses. I saw a review on this place recently in the Food section of the Chronicle, a guy from NY had written a book on pizza and trash talked California pizza. An editor for the Food section of the Chronicle called him out for a pizza challenge. They went to over a dozen Bay Area pizzarias. At the end of the day, not only did he change his mind about California pizza generally, but also commented that Little Star is far and away the better deep dish pizza over Zachary's. Negative I haven't eaten there but I went recently for drinks with friends;they had been there for an hour and a half when I showed up but I had to wait in the 45 min. long line to get into the place so I could pay $10 a drink. Fortunately, someone staying there was nice enough to get me in through the VIP/Hotel guest enterance.Although it's defintely hip, I found the bouncers to be a**holes and the place full of pretentious yuppies. cocktails are $10 a pop... the whole scene was a bit to obscene for me Review #2835 Clift Hotel Redwood Room

Positive My review from my visit a couple years ago read as follows: "A nice, classy restaurant with good food, elegantly prepared and plated. A bit on the pricey side but conveniently located downtown near theaters, hotels, and shopping. Sake is served in traditional wooden box cups." I went there again last night (8/27/06) and was reminded of how good the food was and how much I liked this place. Awesome decor, very friendly professional waiter, and the food was delicious. We had lamb, duck, corn chili soup, calamari, ahi tuna tartare, veggie curry, veggie noodles, and a chocolate mousse dessert. Everything was delicious and I'd definitely go back. Review #2562 Ponzu

Positive This sushi restaurant and full-bar serves up wonderfully fresh and innovative sushi (and Japanese standards) in a hip setting to a young 20 & 30-something crowd. Neutral After 30 years this SF native, inventor of the "Mai Tai" and tropical drink specialist has just returned. Located in the old "Starz" location, Trader Vic's is beautifully decorated with polynesian masks, canoes, bamboo ratan ceiling, beautiful bar. Menu is seafood heavy but also offers up the standards (chicken, steak, pork) & all seems to be prepared w/ a Polynesian twist. Neutral The first time I went there I was quite impressed with the food though a bit put off by the owner/waiter's aloof attitude. However, I went there again recently and was underwhelmed by the food, the service was poor (dirty dishes and empty water glasses sat on our table for 10 minutes+ before anyone did anything about them (and there was only a handful of other occupied tables in the place) and to top it off, the owner/waiter added an automatic 20% gratuity to our bill when our table only had 7 people. The plus side- supposedly Fattoush donates part of their proceeds to HIV/AIDS research and the Palestinian fare is more unique than your typical Middle Eastern restaurant's. At ~$15 entree, I wouldn't call this place inexpensive as one reviewer describes it. It's a decent value at best. Review #1234 Fattoush Restaurant

Neutral In light of my TWO visits there now, I am incredulous at so many positive reviews. I've been here twice now and after the second time, I felt compelled to downgrade my review from positive to neutral. Although the space is very nice and aesthetically pleasing and I LOVE that they serve Niman Ranch free range, hormone-free meat, both times the waitstaff has been totally indifferent if not aloof. Most recently, my leg of lamb was well prepared but the sides it was served with were cold and my partner's halibut was certainly nothing special. The asparagus appetizer was the best part of the meal. The Scharffenberger pot de creme for $6.50 tasted like Jello pudding. I want so badly for this place to be better as it's in a great neighborhood, is a great space, uses great sustainable ingredients, and even offers a Passover inspired menu during Pesach, but sadly, it just isn't. Positive Although the food at Tu Lan is decent (Vietnamese spring rolls are a must) one really eats here for the experience. Located in the ghetto, this SF landmark has been cooking cheap filling food 25 years Review #1080 Tu Lan

Positive Hands down THE BEST SUSHI DEAL IN THE CITY. Although they've recently raised the price on their sushi dinner special (no time or day restrictions) to $12.50, it's still a great deal. Includes miso, rice, 5 pieces nigiri, & 2 rolls (subs only 25 cents!) Good quality fish and rarely a line. Plus, if you're a UPromise subscriber, you get 10% of your total meal credited to your account which adds up if you go here as often as I do. :) Review #1078 We Be Sushi

Positive True the portions aren't anything to write home about but this place his definitely hip and the food was fantastic. I had a free-range, hormone-free steak with fries that was perfectly prepared. Review #1077 Delfina
